Well, at least he didn't kill the ex. That seems to be working out at least. And Nurse Elkins is moving on which is smart on her part. Ok to the worlds first pornographer but small victories. Obviously subways work out in the long run but I wonder what happens to the current project and if it all ends in tears.

Thack has gone full Frankenstein. "Even this brain is getting bored of your poo poo."

Lucy going out with Henry (and leaving his head spinning) seemed like a continuation of what the prostitute told her about the power she wields in the bedroom. To what end is she gonna use it though? Are we gonna get a female doctor next season, with three-way bickering between Algie, Lucy and Gallinger?

We're halfway through the season, ratings are lower than ever, and no renewal has been announced. I wouldn't get your hopes up about a new season.

After what happened with Halt and Catch Fire, where the ratings were terrible, AMC dithered till way after the end of its last season, analysts were saying it was going to be cancelled, and the actors themselves thought it would be cancelled, I'm just going to hope everything continues forever.

This latest episode was great. I especially liked the intimate scenes with Bertie's family and their interactions with his ~~girlfriend~~. Some extremely well-acted and directed moments there. Death bonds.

Not surprised to see Everett turning into a monster. It'll be interesting to see where the writers are going with his and Edwards journeys.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and Thackenstein was indeed amazing.

She had a fit one night that looked like a stroke. Went into hospital, found the cause was a tiny tumour on the surface of her brain. The tumour caused swelling, the swelling caused the fit.

After scans of the rest of her body to make sure there were no other masses the tumour was removed using a laser gizmo called, wonderfully, a 'gamma knife.'

From seizure to surgery to home in bed within three weeks, and all for free. God bless the NHS.

She was awake for her thing too, like the dope fiend in the last episode. They have to keep talking to you to make sure they haven't accidentally removed your childhood or your sense of smell.

On reflection, the 'mother dying of cancer' storyline probably wouldn't have sat very well either.

I'm glad Bertie's relationship with the journalist is progressing. There was an episode recently where that subplot just disapeared.

Incidentally, the part where the Chickering family all started laughing at the joke she made at dinner was oddly one of my favorite scenes of the series thus far. It was this bizarre yet cathartic moment in a show charged with just such an intense amount of gravitas where one of the most serious characters in the show (the father) finally loosens up and laughs (in a hilarious fashion, like somebody who laughs once every few years). It was weird and refreshing.

I agree totally! When she made the joke, I was on pins and needles thinking "oh they aren't going to be happy about that!" and expected a lot of tension, but then everyone starts laughing and the tone breaks. I thought that was pretty great.

One is to rinse once more after the soap, and one is similar to barbicide (Alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride)- the cleaner that barbers use for their scissors and other tools- and the third was an iodine solution. I worked on a production of a play called "A Plague of Angels," which was about Typhoid Mary, and the dramaturg informed us of the sanitation stuff. I don't have an original source on it, however.

Carbolic acid I think.

William Halstead, who Thackery is based on, introduced the use of rubber gloves as an alternative.

quote:

In the winter of 1889 and 1890—I cannot recall the month—the nurse in charge of my operating-room complained that the solutions of mercuric chloride produced a dermatitis of her arms and hands. As she was an unusually efficient woman, I gave the matter my consideration and one day in New York requested the Goodyear Rubber Company to make as an experiment two pair of thin rubber gloves with gauntlets.

According to David Milch, "she was an unusually efficient woman" meant she was his heroin connection, so you can thank his smack habit for the invention of surgical gloves.

Just watched the fifth episode, Cleary continues to be The Man, Thack is headed for a very hard run into a wall and then smear hisself down and Henry is a stunning mix of forward thinking and horrific brutality.

So, just like his old man.

Also, I hope Abigail finds happiness (Not with Thackery, like, at all) and they are really drawing out Cornelia's sexual assault/rape by her dad in law. The writing really is the weakest bit.

The Speight investigation seemed like such an interesting storyline at the start of the season. I can't tell if the writers simply forgot about it or if they just had no idea how to push it forwards while keeping up with all of the other characters. All of the different plots feel disconnected beyond the fact that they involve characters from The Knick. Season 1 felt a lot tighter than this.

Cornelia should be spearheading what happened to Speight along with Cleary, but I feel like Henry is getting far too much screen time for a character who appears to have little more depth than Captain Robertson in season 1.

Moltke

Also the sudden appearance of Algie's LONG-LOST ESTRANGED WIFE right when it seemed like Alg-nelia was about to takeoff again is a page directly out of a cheap daytime soap opera and is a plotline beneath the dignity of this show.

edit - Which isn't to say that Opal is necessarily a bad character, but she was introduced in the worst way imaginable that only contributes to further dilution of the story this season.

I definitely was/am watching because of the great primary hospital drama from season 1 and solid B-plots Typhoid Mary, and the Adventures of Sister Harriet: Abortionist (in addition to the beautiful cinematography, luscious detail of the sets and costumes, and the great musical score).

This season, Mays' plot ended in a dead end after soaking up a lot of screen time for what amounted to little more than comic relief, the primary mystery of the season is being squandered (Speight), and we're seeing a whole lot of the least interesting Robertson's travails in capital management (which is too unrelatable to be compelling as of yet, but could maybe be going somewhere).

I think we are forgetting that the Speight and the Robertson's stories are connected. Who do you think killed Speight?
