One thing I do think this game improved on over the original Sonic formula is that Lilac doesn't die in one hit without rings.

The Batman parody duck you were thinking of was Darkwing Duck. The Earth, Metal, & Fire ships are are likely named for the five Wu Xing which are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and finally Water. This is the Chinese equivalent of the four classical elements Fire, Air, Water, and Earth used by both Western society starting with the Greeks as well as Japanese philosophy. There is is also sometimes a fifth element called Aether by the former and Void by the latter.
