I think Neo Getter Robo vs Shin Getter Robo is the best introduction to the Getter franchise, personally. It's only four episodes long, introduces all of the main cast, and tells a story that covers all the beats of the manga. It's also a very gorgeous anime, has a killer soundtrack and is just loads of fun.

in addition to which, the show is absolutely stolen by the crew of the Texas Mack (the sister piloting its hat, by the way its hat is an airplane), whose legacy is basically the most amazing engrish in anime

I'm enjoying Aquarion Logos but it definitely could be better. Most of the supporting cast doesn't get nearly enough to do, despite actually being pretty cool when they get the spotlight, if it fixed that it could be great. I mean, that and add a Fudou, because it is definitely lacking in Fudou.

Akira is more likable than the terrible duo of Amata and Mikono, if only because nobody takes him seriously. And I mean, he is literally Tendo Souji in a mecha anime, I'm not going to complain about that. Also I really like the route they went with Aquarion proper, with lots and lots of forms and even cute animal forms. Phoenix, bug, rabbit, gryphon, it keeps being unique and neat and I hope that continues forever.

That said I have to seriously wonder how the hell they're adapting that to Super Robot Wars. I'm really curious.

Probably just have all the Vectors be the default units, and rearrange them pretty much at will either before or during a mission, or like...combination attacks to the extreme. Kinda depends on what kinds of things the robots can do later on, so far none of the forms have done more than one or two things.

Watched M3: The Dark Metal recently. I don't know exactly how this managed to fly so far under the radar because it was actually pretty good. It had some melodrama at the start and Okada seems to have a habit of making overblown and hammy villains for the most part, but I liked it overall. The CG was pretty good and the Kawamori-designed mecha were quite cool. They way they folded up was really neat.

Yeah, I'm sad so few people watched it, because it was overall good - its faults were more missing elements than things done outright bad. I really liked how the characterization went in the latter half - especially with mr generico main protagonist, and the world as a whole just bearing down on him all 'no actually being all waffly and indecisive KIND OF MAKES YOU A VERY BAD PERSON' and he has to do things unfamiliar to many such protagonists in his vein, such as actually risk something and open himself to being hurt, I feel like it was something of a jab at the vast majority of anime protags nowadays

I've never really thought about why robots are cool before. I think maybe it's because it's like a superpower but not. Like, it's a military machine, not different from a tank or a jeep, but suddenly the character is fifty feet tall and can smash buildings But at the same time they aren't super heroes? so basically, it makes the character capable of incredible feats and a powerful, imposing presence, but without being silly? As ridiculous as it sounds to call giant robots not silly. Amuro can single handedly save the White Base and all the people on it, but at the same time remain the dumb weak kid.

pretty much this yeah

functionally giant robots do the same thing as superheroes but superheroes are usually very idealized, larger than life people who can seem a little beyond human, whereas giant robots are just things, that can break and malfunction, controlled by some teenager who only even saw the thing the other day and thinks he's hot poo poo

plus usually they're presented in an almost reasonable way that almost makes it sound like an actual thing that could happen even if the science behind it is nonsense (hi mi name is a 70s robot and i'm powered by magnets because that's what the toy does)

the 'random teenager ends up in a doom gundam' plot happens a lot for a reason, because it sounds like it could happen to us, even though if you or I tried to commandeer a tank and be a bigshot, we'd probably end up on trial for war crimes and thrown in jail lol

...to be honest though, I'd like to see a show where big robots are explicitly a specialist role in warfare, like, SAM carriers or anti-tank defenses, instead of big mainstays. I think Dougram does something like that, with lots of combined arms stuff?

For a genre built around big stompy metal men hardly any mecha actually use their legs.

I can't name ten shows that do it. The few that do it are great though.

Argevollen, The Big O, M3, Nobunaga the Fool (iirc), Basquash, Gad Guard, Dai-Guard, Xabungle if you don't count some of the component vehicles being able to fly, Zoids if you don't count the obvious bird/pterodactyls, and Evangelion if you don't count Rebuild. There's probably tons more, though admittedly probably mostly in the 80s and 90s.

There's also bunches of OVAs but it's cheating since the ones I think of are a single episode lol.

Not even counting things that go into space because that's basically the same thing as flying!

Mm, yeah reading the current SRW Z lp gave me a reasonable idea of what's going on in King Gainer. First half is people wanting to migrate but being stopped by bigwig railroad corporatist goons, then suddenly by the end it's dealing with a big old doomsday ancient bio-weapon /thing/. I figure this is as good a place as any to talk about Dragon's Heaven, an OVA from 1988 directed by Makoto Kobayashi. Kobayashi is most famous for his mecha designs for stuff like Gundam, and one of the robots in this OVA looks exactly like the Baund Doc. The story is about a robot called Shaian whose human pilot is killed and decides to take a nap. He wakes up after a thousand years when a girl named Ikuru approaches his vicinity and finds out his rival from a thousand years ago is still alive. It's pretty short, with the first couple minutes being person-sized models of the two main mechs being shot dramatically, and the last fifteen minutes being a making-of of the two models. The reason I suggest it though is that it looks loving rad:

Dragon's Heaven was one of those ovas I was thinking of for robots that actually use their legs and I'm surprised it was even mentioned

It was pretty good and I quite liked the music

However the best thing about it is in the credits one of the guys flips off the camera

Exodus had been in the makings a WHILE, I think they originally had like a 2012 release in mind. So the first season came a little out of the blue, and all the announcement they did for the second season was the enormous sequel hook at the very end of the first.

At first I was a little disappointed with Exodus after how much I'd been looking forward to it, but it was basically a cascade of amazing events by the end.

But I have like no idea what the show's about, because my usual review sites aren't covering it. Anyone give a summary?

More or less the same general plot as the first show and the movie. There's still millions of jello aliens screwing up the earth and there's a fresh batch of young children to be sent on the front lines to punch them. The big thing for Exodus is the cast is split, one half goes off on a field trip to India to aid the titular exodus going on there, while the other half stays behind and gets superpowers for their robots that also transfer over to their personal lives which starts screwing things up.

It ends with the most :getin: thing ever in that one character becomes able to look into certain points in the future, and sees a very near one where the safe and happy island they live on is ruined and all her friends are dead.

...well that and the time loop, the reveal that it was going on and why was completely baffling in large part because time loops make zero sense. also a scientist dude literally invented time travel to rectify a slight performance issue in his robot

the sequel OVA made from the scraps of its planned second season was really good though, I didn't think it felt rushed so much as it was...filler-less. You already know all the characters and the setting so exposition is pointless, so instead of waffling about for twelve episodes they just shove the climax out. "Here is the final boss, he is very mad because his girlfriend got stole and he was sent back in time and had to wait until he was hella old and infirm because the guy he wanted revenge on was in the future" is the entire plot, now let us have robots fight

oh god yes it was WONDERFUL when this inspiring and heroic music was hitting its crescendo right when Hayato was all 'and tell your kids that they're going to be boring and ordinary and never achieve their dreams either'

all i remember was some people in planes fought over an island full of mystic stuff, and then the lady there sang some song and turned some ancient relics into something from evangelion, which then hosed off and roy fokker, who was there the whole time, never mentions this completely batshit thing in the following macross one for obvious reasons, also his scientist girlfriend died or something

but also generally speaking anime needs to stop trying to explain evolution with weird alien nonsense because it's clear biology textbooks don't exist in japan or something

it does baffle me how people seem so confused and afraid from something whose base principle is 'kids tend to look like their parents'

Eh, I'm of the opinion Zeorymer's more of a time sink than anything else. Pretty much everything that gave it interest to me was it being made in the late 80s and as such having that aesthetic, and the admittedly cool robot design (Lanstar is just ridiculously good looking). It's not terrible for anything, it just doesn't have much going for it.

Some of the best robot OVAs I've seen would have to be Mazinkaiser (ESPECIALLY the General of Darkness little sequel bit to it) and Mazinkaiser SKL which are just great fun overall. Being me, I'd also recommend Fafner Right of Left, it's a prequel so you don't need to know much about the actual show to get it. I also really enjoyed Bushi Road, something about it just felt right to me.

...I also...wouldn't say it's GOOD by any means but Iczer-1 is also...certainly a THING that happened. I wouldn't advise it unless you're prepared for some serious poo poo, but...it...sort of has relevance as apparently being like, the first OVA ever?
