The 1960s is a big and exciting decade for anime! There's a lot of experimentation going on with in nascent artform, for example Keiichiro Kimura of Tiger Mask fame famously challenged himeslf to experiment in three places every episode of a show. There's a lot of interesting and often strange series and films being made that are often overlooked because they are so old.

For movies I picked two films that I believe had a lasting impact on the industry and on other artists, and one that I just plain enjoy. For shows I picked series by thethree major creators of the time; Osamu Tezuka, Shotaro Ishinomori and Mitsuteru Yokoyama. I chose series that I think fall outside what most people expect out of these artists, and to show the wide variety of anime available even in the 1960s.

The other reason I picked them is because many of the people who worked on these films and shows would go on to be memorable and sometimes even famous creators; Hayao Miyazaki worked on two of the films featured, and Dororo's production team is basically a Who's Who of great 70s and 80s anime creators. In a way the success of these shows would pave the way for the future of anime!

My hope is that you will enjoy and keep watching the series I preview here, and even seek out other series that other posters or myself bring up!

Here is the schedule. Some of the movies are licensed, so the later dates should give people the time to acquire them legally if they so desire. All of the television show episodes are on youtube, so there's no worry there! I'll make introductory posts the day before each movie.

Monday, October 5 - The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon, Mahou Tsukai Sally 1-2

Wednesday, October 7 - Horus, Prince of the Sun and Sabu and Ichi 2-3, 7

Friday, October 9 - The Flying Phantom Ship, Dororo 1-4

Sunday, October 11 - Senya Ichiya Monogatari

The only stuff I've seen was really bad Toei movies from the period, where they were just trying to make Disney films with 10% of the budget and half the staff. I'm looking forward to learning more about the time period!

Toei basically dominated the movie market until the end of the decade, so almost all the movies in the 60s are made by them. The only ones that aren't are usually movie adaptations of television shows like the Cyborg 009 movies.

I think it's important to show the kind of all-ages films that made up most of the decade, so I picked what I think is one of the best for our first film.

Our final anime, Senya Ichiya Monogatari is pretty psychedelic, but for the most part psychedelia in anime is more of a 70s thing.

I wanted to show Speed Racer but TSHS took down all their Mach GoGoGo torrents after it was licensed, and the only other really good Tatsunoko show I could find has miserable subs. One of the biggest issues in deciding what to show was the matter of availability, so much good stuff either has no subs or really bad ones, or just straight up isn't available outside of pricey box sets.

What kinds of issues should I expect to see in these shows/movies, then? I'm guessing pacifism will play a big part. Did they have a big push for women's rights and reproductive rights at that time as well?

I think many universities had student rebellions at this time. I don't know how they fit into 60s anime though.

Also, I guess I'll try to watch these, but I have 4 classes this term so

There were anti-war protests, usually centered around Japan being a staging ground for the Vietnam War. Another big thing was anti-nuclear protests, something you can set your watch to in Japan. Then you have the vaguely socialist collegiate uprisings. AFAIK, only Horus will bring this stuff up, but the rest will be straight ahead Disney style animated films.* However, these issues will come to a head in the 70s with stuff like Barefoot Gen

Poverty and class conflict come up a bunch in 60s anime. It's most blatant in the anime Hustle Punch, which is about a bunch of kids who live in a literal dump who fight against the machinations of a rich guy who wants to bulldoze the dump because it blocks his view.

this HAS to be the inspiration behind the design of Zelda: the wind waker, it HAS to, the way the characters are drawn especially their eyes is way too close to call it a coincidence.
