They don't have to remain together, no. Basically what the Japanese did here for Operation Z was what happened historically (N. Orleans reduced but not eliminated and the KB returning to Tokyo).

Yep, welcome to EotS!

Their actual moves were moving from the Ominato in the home islands, move 18 hexes to their position next to Pearl Harbour (usually the maximum you can move is 15 with a 3 Ops card) and then move back using Post-Battle Movement.

EotS works by using operations: when you move a counter, it is simulating an entire operation rather than a single move, and the more you move, the easier it is for the enemies to react. Even single battles within EotS would represent multiple engagements potentially lasting weeks in real life. The abstraction is necessary to make the game viable at such a strategic level.

That's right, turn 1 is just the play of two cards (Operation Z and IAI) by the japanese, where they have complete surprise and the Allies can't even react. I usually start with 1942 when I have games IRL because it's pretty boring for the allies otherwise.

Nope, nothing to prevent you from overstacking as part of an offensive: you can actually even overstack ground units, although you will lose them if you don't take enough losses because you can't post-battle move with ground units.
