I *think* claymore mines have metal backing plates for a similar reason---combined with their internal geometry, they make sure that it is deadly in mostly one direction by using the metal plate to reflect part of the explosion back towards the forward direction. You can do other somewhat unintuitive things with high explosives, like making directional breaching charges using det cord and water-filled bags---the relatively incompressible water will reflect part of the blast in the intended direction.

Of course, an EMP device that happens to look just like a claymore AP mine is dumb as hell.

They are two million dollars away from receiving four times the originally requested amount of $23 million. For that we have a lovely spaceflight tech demo, a glorified lobby full of guys ripped off from Call of Duty: Future War Porn, and a company that can't go Two Weeks without yet another bullshit controversy. The scope of this game, which was never terribly concrete to begin with, is utterly incomprehensible and yet continues to expand. There is no timeline, no accountability, and everything CIG has done in response to every controversy and criticism leveled at them has only damaged their standing. Anyone giving CIG more money at this stage is either delusional or retarded, and should not be considered mentally competent to handle their own finances.

So yes, it's very clear how much progress CIG has made. Not nearly enough.
