I would love to effort post about the psychology of suicide but probably shouldn't. All I'll say is that if someone is in the position where they might commit suicide over the failure of a game then they were suicidal before their attachment to the game and were using it as a means to ignore the true source of their pain.

Therefore: The failure of this game won't make anyone commit suicide. But some suicidal people might be obsessed with this game.

The failure might not be the root cause of suicide, but sadly could serve as the final nail...
I know someone (a friend of a friend) who did try to kill himself, and that guy had a sudden change of heart as he was bleeding out. Luckily an amublance arrived fast enough (he called them himself). The actual event that pushed him to do it was neglible to any normal person.
Some of those people went with trash food for months to put more money in, or risked/some lost their significant other. If those are already close to suicide. It failing could push someone over. I hope it doesn't happen.

Buying online in germany: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Widerruf_%28Recht%29 (not up to date but was up till 2014)

Summary: After a product is delivered (S42 or the release of a Game), you have 14 days to go back on the contract. Without having to state any reasons. Though if your seller does not point out the right to do so, you have no cutoff for a refund.

P.S.
Fun question: How can a concept sale end in a pledge?

Well I think the license is meaningless if you can't use the service/product (PU, S42, etc.). And this they never told me about my "Widerrufsrecht" the 14 days extend to the date they tell me about this right + :2weeks:. That's not legal knowledge, but it falls in line how the BGB (Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch) is treating stuff like that.

That's like paying for any Anti-Virus Suite license and the start of service is 1 year in the future, after 2 years you still can't use the AV-Service. I dare say that's a failure to honor the contract. And thus you can ask for your money back. I highly doubt any judge (at least in germany) would go against that.

The rules for physical products and digital licenses are extremely different (even if they probably shouldn't be; that's the way the courts have ruled).
Say you pay a flat fee to access Apple Music. When you pay the fee, they have contracts to provide access to 10 songs and you agree to a TOS that you agree to be able to listen to those 10 songs. A year later, they renegotiate and only have access to 5 songs, so they revise their TOS to only allow you access to those 5 songs.

Your example is slightly flawed. It would be like:

- Paying in 2012 for 10 tracks, delivery date 2014
- up to 2014 you'd be getting not 10 tracks, but 1 teaser of two different tracks. But they're of low quality and only 3 seconds long.
- 2015 you get another teaser track.

What you paid for hasn't been done and hasn't been delivered.

If they had delivered S42 and the PU, and even if it sucked. You'd have no recourse. But that's certainly not the case. It might be a grey legal area in the US of A. But the countries in the EU do have a somewhat different legal situation.

Once you logged in following the ToS change, you were presented with the full new ToS again when you agreed to them, fulfilling the presentation requirements.

As for the FTC page you keep citing, once again, that's specifically describing rules for specific deliverable goods and merchandise, not digital licenses, for which the rules are not the same and are much more complicated.

Clicking a ToS doesn't waive your customer rights in the EU. Just saying.

The one million is simply a count of the number of users that registered to use the RSI website. No purchase necessary.

Also, I know this from a period of botting the votes when RSI used to do stuff like ship polls. Created several thousand fake accounts in order to ensure voting outcomes were what I wanted. I wasn’t the only one that scripted either. Considering some of those votes would get to 50,000 votes and I’d just create fake accounts every time (never bothered to save the login credentials from earlier botting for votes there are a lot of fake accounts.

Not to mention accounts from folks that either wanted to browse the forums or enjoy a free fly weekend.
