So I shout "Set your life on fire!"
I always plan on mostly watching movies I haven't seen before, but I didn't bother building up much of a stockpile this year, so I might have to throw in more re-watches than usual.

October 1st: Nexxt (2001)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0269624/

I started the month off with a somewhat unusual film. It's a Hungarian horror/black comedy that came out in theatres, but never received any sort of video release (or at least none that I can find). Right now, it's only available via a recording of a television airing that's missing a full half-hour of the movie. From what I've heard, most of what's missing is violent, gory stuff, but there's still quite a bit left.
Anyway, the movie itself is a satire of talk shows and reality TV. The host of the titular show, Frau Plastic Chicken (yep), has invited the man who apparently inspired the character of Alex from A Clockwork Orange. He's living a normal, happy life now, and has no idea what torment's in store for him. At the same time, the show is broadcasting the arrest of this Patrick Bateman-wannabe serial killer, and plans on playing games with him as well.
Nexxt might not be the best thing I've ever seen, and I don't know how much better or worse it would be with the missing half-hour, but it's quite ambitious, and its bizarre and cruel sense of humour makes it very memorable. It seems fairly ahead of its time, and probably would have been better appreciated if it were released more recently.

So I shout "Set your life on fire!"
October 2nd: Evil Spirits (1990)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099523/

Karen Black runs a boardinghouse, taking her tenants' cheques and killing them off when they get too annoying for her invalid husband. Of course, this is raising suspicions, but will anyone be able to do anything about it before getting slashed/axed/stabbed/poisoned?
It's definitely not a very serious movie, with most of the characters being kooky weirdos, and Black constantly hamming it up while conversing with her husband's ridiculous voiceover. One scene at the end has a character discovering Karen Black's husband's corpse, complete with a Psycho-esque musical sting, only to have no real reaction at all because it was so obvious. Worth a watch if you like fun b-movies with a decent amount of blood.

October 3rd: Prettykill (1987)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093775/

Hookers are being murdered, and our hero detective is looking for the killer while dealing with his increasingly insane girlfriend who has a split personality. Big, shocking spoiler ahead: She's the killer!
While it is ridiculous enough for some laughs (the girlfriend acting like her abusive redneck father is incredible), I feel pretty confident when I say that nothing else I see this month could possibly be as bad as Prettykill.

October 4th: Incubus (2006)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0462359/

...yeah, nevermind. This is worse.

So I shout "Set your life on fire!"
October 5th: Baxter (1989)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094713/

The story of a murderous, perverted Bull Terrier and his desire to find the perfect home, narrated by the dog himself.
This is an excellent contrast to the countless family-friendly dog movies out there. Watching Baxter's mind work as he hatches his disturbing plots and waiting to see how he'll carry them out is quite thrilling. I enjoyed this one a lot, and John Waters gave it his seal of approval too.

October 6th: Blue Monkey (1987)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092677/

Despite the title, there are no monkeys in this movie. I remember seeing this on TV as a child and being very confused by that.
When a bug bites a man after he touches a strange plant in a greenhouse, the deadly parasitic infection spreads throughout the hospital, eventually leading to a giant monster bug wreaking havoc on everyone. It's a nice, gory tribute to the big killer bug movies of the 50s (and maybe a bit of an Alien rip-off).

October 7th: Fever Lake (1996)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116299/

A terrible movie about six "teenage" idiots going to a secluded cabin for the weekend. Three guesses what happens to them.
Okay, there's one slight difference between this axe-wielding killer and your usual axe-wielding killer; this one's an evil spirit that may or may not be controlled by a Native American stereotype.
Unless you're a huge fan of Corey Haim/Mario Lopez/Bo Hopkins and have to watch everything they've been in, ignore this one or watch the RiffTrax.

October 8th: The Believers (1987)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092632/

Martin Sheen is up against a voodoo cult that wants to sacrifice his son.
This one's pretty good, some silly moments aside. The best part's when the spiders burst out of Helen Shaver's face. Really creepy stuff.

October 9th: Tusk (2014)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3099498/

Meh. Not good, not horrendously bad. Just mediocre. But then I'm not really a big Kevin Smith fan.

October 10th: Antibodies (2005)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0337573/

Basically just a goofy, German Silence of the Lambs rip-off with a male protagonist who's badly influenced by the villain. Something about evil being contagious. It's not that great, but I liked it well enough.

October 11th: Cards of Death (1986)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3828160/

A movie infamous for its former unavailability, Cards of Death recently received a limited re-issue. I wish it had gotten a wider release, because it's a must-see for any shot-on-video horror lovers.
It's about this weird, underground gambling ring where the winner has to kill the loser or be killed themselves. Bodies have been piling up, and the local cops and their captain's son are desperate to find out who's behind everything after the captain falls victim to the game's organizer and his henchwomen.
It's a sleazy, bloody mess that never takes itself too seriously, and I loved it. The villains are ridiculous, the cops are walking clichés, the soundtrack is cheap, the editing is jumpy, and the lights and colours will either make your eyes bleed or give them an orgasm. This movie is fantastic, go watch it.

I've been feeling under the weather and too lazy to write anything lately, but I think Cards of Death reinvigorated me. I feel like a new person!

October 12th, 13th & 14th: Rose Red (2002)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0259153/

Last year I watched Storm of the Century and liked it, so I decided to watch another Stephen King miniseries this year. I saw this one when it aired, but didn't remember that much.
It's about a group of psychics going to a seemingly haunted mansion, where several people have disappeared or died, to try and figure out what's going on. I didn't enjoy it as much as Storm of the Century, but it still was pretty good and cheesy fun.

October 15th: The Dark (1993)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109551/

A goofy little creature feature about a underground tunnel-digging rat monster which secretes a fluid that aids in healing. A rogue scientist (Stephen McHattie) is trying to capture it so it can be studied, while an ex-FBI agent (Brion James) simply wants to kill it. It also features Neve Campbell as a supporting character in her first movie role.
As I said, it's pretty goofy, with one scene involving an apparently magical shotgun which can hit a guy without killing him, but also make three motorcycles explode in one shot. But goofy stuff is usually fun stuff, and this is no exception.

October 16th: What We Do in Shadows (2014)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3416742/

A mockumentary on a group of vampire roommates and their struggles with the modern world. I thought it was very funny, but I don't really want to say much about it, lest I give away all the good bits.

October 17th: The Carrier (1988)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094837/

After being attacked by a strange creature, a young man is carrying a disease which spreads to anything he touches, and then causes anyone who touches said thing to melt. This triggers an apocalyptic scenario in his town, with everybody covering themselves in plastic and using cats to test objects.
It's a strange and darkly humorous film, being a satire of close-knit small towns, religious zealotry, and the AIDS epidemic. It's also not very gory, despite the whole "people melting" premise. Recommended for any fans of low-budget weirdness.

So I shout "Set your life on fire!"
I wound up being really busy/lazy the past couple weeks, but I still managed to watch a movie a day. I'll keep most of these extra short. This was a good month, for the most part.

October 18th: Wolf's Hole (1987)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090271/

A creepy Czechoslovakian flick about a group of teenagers stuck at a small skiing resort with their mysterious supervisors. Good stuff.

October 19th: The Washing Machine (1993)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105785/

Ultra sleazy giallo-type stuff with three sisters playing games with a detective who's trying to find out who killed the pimp of the one of them, and where his body went.

October 20th: Mécanix (2003)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0427580/

French-Canadian and mostly stop-motion. Very pretty and strange.

October 21st: Jack the Ripper (1976)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074408/

Klaus Kinski plays Jack the Ripper. Unsurprisingly, he's really good at it.

October 22nd: Maggie (2015)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1881002/

Arnold Schwarzenegger's daughter is slowly turning into a zombie. It's all very sad, and Arnold does a surprisingly good job playing a scared, mourning father.

October 23rd: Blind Faith (1989)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0299548/

This might just be my favourite shot-on-video horror ever. I know I praised Cards of Death a little while ago, but this one's good in a different way.
A detective and a psychologist are grilling three people, trying to find out where a serial killer hid the bodies. These people are one of his victims who apparently managed to escape, his mentally challenged accomplice, and the killer himself. It takes place mostly in an interrogation room, with various flashbacks to the gruesome events being described.
I thought both the acting and effects were very good, especially for an SOV film. It's an interesting little flick that's worth a look.

October 24th: City in Panic (1986)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0299681/

A killer is targeting (mostly) gay men who have AIDS. An intriguing inversion from a genre that (mostly) targets women.

October 25th: Stoker (2013)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1682180/

It's good. Watch it.

October 26th: Beyond the 7th Door (1987)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0321432/

If you tied Tommy Wiseau and Billy Drago together and tossed them into a vat of nuclear waste, Lazar Rockwood is what would come crawling out. Besides that, this is one of the worst things I've ever seen.

October 27th: The Eternal Present (2004)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0445009/

A young man notices that everyone he interacts with has started dying, and is convinced that he has become the personification of death. Very strange, "artsy" stuff. I like it.

October 28th: Sur le seuil (2003)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0380732/

Tragic events seem to be happening after a horror novelist writes about them, and the doctor who's treating him after a suicide attempt tries to find a logical explanation for this. Not bad at all.

October 29th: Corruption (1968)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061520/

Just how many "mad scientist kills/mutilates a bunch of people to try and fix his disfigured/dead loved one" movies are there?

October 30th: Black Past (1989)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0163554/

Lots of gross gore and even grosser mullets in this one. Not that great, but the effects are really fantastic. Much better then anything from Andreas Schnaas, who makes similar German shot-on-video gorefests.

October 31st: Ernest Scared Stupid (1991)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101821/

I probably watched this movie 100 times as a kid. It's dumb, harmless fun, and I still enjoyed it.
