Forget the FBI, Red brought what's essentially The Illuminati to it's knees. If this show had an alien invasion plot it would probably end with Red becoming the supreme emperor of the Galaxy.

They would've had to have Liz turning to the camera and winking while being stuffed into the body bag to make it anymore obvious that she wasn't actually dead. I can't wait until next season when we find out that Kirk is in fact not Liz's father and Red deflects her questions by sending her after the blacklister of the week. Hopefully something fun like an evil marine biologist who turns dolphins into assassins.

BIG HEADLINE posted:And they could not be telegraphing Samar's almost certainly grizzly end any more clearly. You could literally see in her face how badly she thought that scene between her and Aram was written. And of course the only other woman in the group is the one who can't put aside her feelings and do her job. Really progressive writing there.

If you're going to choose a controlling, emotionally abusive, homicidal criminal mastermind to be your father figure, at least choose the one that didn't kidnap you and threaten to jump off a forty story building with your newborn baby.

The characters exists in an universe where the New World Order is proven to exist and yet no one seems to care. I can't wait until Red introduces the task force to the reptilians who secretly run the planet and everyone forgets the very next episode because Lizzie's been kidnapped for the 5,385th time.

BIG HEADLINE posted:And sorry, I know we're in a parallel universe where everyone chooses to ignore Samar being a "former" (*wink wink*) agent of Mossad, but to act surprised when she's, oh poo poo, *still* active, and then to admonish it with a glorified wrist slap and not with...I dunno, deportation?!?! Also, writers, how hard is it to write "seeing as I just got out of a deposition where I talked about my poor taste in women and how that led to my compromising of national security, I don't think it's a great time for me to start dating a Mossad double agent who just proved her professional loyalties don't align with mine." I realize that believable consequences stopped being a thing in The Blacklist universe even before Lizzie got three years probation for assassinating a cabinet official, but I gotta think that taking part in a black ops raid by a foreign agency that resulted in multiple casulties on American soil should warrant more than a "I'm very disappointed with you young lady" speech from the boss.

Redemption won't last, but I gotta say Tom Keen makes a better protagonist than his wife. In this episode alone he executed several complex spy missions and performed impromptu field surgery. Liz on the other hand has spent most of her screentime this season sitting around looking vaguely concerned about something.

BIG HEADLINE posted:Also, Eggold and Gathegi have good chemistry for being each other's foils. Honestly the weakest character thus far is Famke - at least Terry O'Quinn knows how to play crazy. Famke's high point was the opening scene, and from that point forward she's looked *bored*. Even her assistant and gigolo seemingly have more depth. I definitely appreciate the fact that show seems to actually be moving along at a steady pace with it's cental mystery. We're towards the end of the forth season of the mothership and we still know only slightly more than than we did by the end of episode one. Even the "big revelation" of Red admitting to being Liz's father can easily walked back. The writers are under the impression that "why character A is so interested in character B" is a mystery that you can hang an entire series on. Pro tip: You can't.

I'm beginning to think Famke was in a contest with Megan Boone to see who could be the least engaged looking female lead in the Blacklist franchise.

So Mr Kaplan was Liz's nanny who practically raised her and loved her like a daughter? That explains the numerous scenes where Kaplan treated Liz as someone who was a passing acquaintance at best, someone to be tolerated at worst.

CaptainCaveman posted:Yeah, I liked the idea of getting Kaplan's backstory but then thought it was kinda dumb when it turned out that much of her life revolved around Liz. I still think the writers are convinced for some reason that Liz is this super interesting captivating amazing character. It's hilarious that this giant, global spanning conflict involving multiple powerful individuals and groups is centered around someone who barely seems to give a poo poo, and is slightly irritated that people keep bothering her with it.

The whole Samar/Aram thing was cute for a while, but the writers stretched it way past the point of anyone caring.

BIG HEADLINE posted:All that aside, though...I know they're going to forget about it, but the inference that Katarina made Red *think* he was Lizzy's father is such a better dramatic element, because it makes Red that much more of a tragic character - the only thing he cares about in his life, the only legacy he has that will persist after he dies...is a lie that he's more than willing to delude himself into believing is true, and he's willing to ruin his 'daughter's' life merely to forcibly be part of hers. It'd make him a truly loathsome and reprehensible villain. Is this is a relationship we're suppose to be rooting for at this point? Just this episode Red had Liz kidnapped by a psychopath who would've killed her at anytime just to draw Kaplan out of hiding. This whole relationship is built on manipulation, control, and dependency. Liz's relationship with Tom is more healthier than this and he spied on her for years and got into several fistfights with her. Hell, from the performances I get the feeling that Spader and Megan Boone themselves don't particularly like each other. Mr Kaplan's love for Liz feels more genuine and unselfish and that something the writers pulled out of their rear end a few episodes before.

The unconditional love of a parent is probably the only logical explanation for Red's never ending devotion to someone who isn't that special, and outright despises him most of the time.
