Mystic Archer is my fave, but I mastered every vocation in my hard mode run and had fun playing all of them. Hard mode is awesome if you want to play a lot of vocations because you get way more discipline points and don't every have to grind for them.

On one hand, I think it's a capcom game so maybe. On the other hand, Japanese devs love to release the stupidest possible PC ports you can develop.

It's really good. I'm looking forward to playing it with internet because late game (BBI) was frustrating sometimes with default pawns and an Assassin main character.

It's got great core mechanics but they're lost on a plot that is absent for most of the game.
It features a fake ending followed by a grindy post game.
It's an open world that's most barren.
There's excessive travel times to needless fluff up the game time.
It's a fun game and I'm definitely gonna double dip on the PC because I haven't played Dark Arisen yet.

Evil Eagle

How are the core mechanics "lost" on the plot of the game. That doesn't make any sense at all.

As far as the other complaints go, most of them are fixed in Dark Arisen. The biggest thing is the addition of way more fast travel points which cuts down on the travel time. There are two more permanent points and four more that you can place anywhere in Gransys. You can more or less ignore the everfall in this version because Bitterblack Isle has way better equipment. You really only need to go there to get a few wakestones for when you want to get the ending, if you even want to do that when you can just play Bitterblack for so long.

I definitely disagree on the open world being barren. I was always running into monsters to fight.

It's a shame that people have been trained to think "open area that doesn't have 9001 useless collectibles on my mini-map" = "pointless barren wasteland".

yeah i love that there's no dumb icons to chase on the map. i don't even mind the escort mission stuff because because i genuinely enjoy just wandering into the wilderness and fighting stuff and if i have a reason to make a particular journey all the better.

i do wish the world was larger, though, with at least 2X as many cool dungeons.

You only get one permanent pawn. The pawns you hire from online don't level up. If you're playing anything but a mage or sorcerer, make sure one of the pawns you hire is a mage pawn with Fire Enchantment or whatever it's called. Fire is the most useful one for a lot of the game, although I think the others are good later. Holy is probably the best one for the endgame. Either way, it'll massively up your damage.

Pawns can look good on paper based on skills and stats and still suck because they have bad AI, so don't be afraid to dismiss a lovely pawn for a better one. A good pawn can stay useful past its level because of this.

Well game mechanics should be in service to a narrative. I just meant that in both games you spend a lot of time playing the game for the game's sake, instead of getting more and more pulled into a narrative. It works to a certain extent while you're learning the systems, but there is a point of diminishing returns that both games reach long before you finish the game.

gotcha. i'll just play it by ear and move pawns out w/out a worry if they start to lag behind. i wish i could do the online stuff to get cool loot and cash, but i don't feel like paying for a wireless adapter and xbox live.

also, please do not turn my thread about dragon's dogma into a tired narrative / gameplay debate. thanks.

Definitely always have a pawn around with Anodyne/High Anodyne. I like to have one that can cure status effects as well, because if there's one thing I don't like about this game it's how much inventory management there can be.

I played through the whole game using Capcom pawns, and its clear that they're all randomly generated because their movesets make no sense. You have to dig for the ones that have the moves that you want. Don't be afraid to spend rift crystals to buy higher level pawns, they'll last a while before you need to swap them out for new ones.

Do NOT pick up Adaro's escort quest: Guardsman Sought at the same time as the quest; Lost and Found as this will potentially bug out Lost and Found. The player will be unable to speak with Adaro regarding Quina's returning regardless if the escort quest is finished, X amount of time has passed, or even killing Adaro.
No possible solution has been found, please refrain from starting both quests at the same time!

guess what i just did, lol. locked myself out of another whole sidequest is what.
