They've definitely upped the framerate since the beta (or since the last version I played, anyway). Apparently a low-framerate battery-friendly toggle is in the works.

Pro-est choice of specialist is Inspector which promotes to Security Chief.

In the game we're currently playing, I could not figure out how one of the players had such high shield on ALL of his bases. Looked around at the specialists I could see of his and found he had a Security Chief which adds 10 max shield to all outposts plus 10 max shields to the outpost of the Security Chief.

So one is workable but takes a much larger force of drillers to accomplish any kind of push against them, but TWO? I had made a comment about it to the player and no lie, shortly after he had managed to get a SECOND. So even his lowest outposts have 30 shields and he has the 2 chiefs at a mine which now has 50 shields.

I'm looking at you Alehkhs :argh:

I know the screen shot is a bunch of nothing in the middle but you can see his outposts around the borders and the 50 shield mine in the top right.

I love seeing people get real-world paranoid about this game. During the beta I was really careful about not giving away what timezone I was in, in case people tried to get a few hours' advantage by scheduling attacks for 2AM my time. (It's not hard to find that out from my posts here, though.)

Yeah there are several really really useful guys and the rest are mostly situational. I used a pirate and a navigator to take apart two opponents that were ganging up against me just by stealing their donations and switching my attack target to force sub optimal driller deployments and just changed back to my original attack target. There is a wealth of tactical strategy available in this game.

BTW TACD, swooping in after I cleared out the mines was an annoying but effective tactic =)

Ughh, this loving game. It's my first match and I was doing reasonably well, heading in for a comfortable third place after a relatively peaceful run. Then I thought I'd take a potshot at a neighbour's base and started amassing drillers at my border. My other neighbour got scared and threatened me. That in turn scared me so I didn't stand down. So he attacked me. And now he's steamrolling my mines with a horde of drillers, and the rest of my alliance bloc is also invading. :saddowns:

e: one thing that is somewhat unbalanced is that my 3/8 players were disqualified due to inactivity around day two; but none of them were near me. So I was surrounded by people who could easily expand into bases that weren't actively being defended, whereas I had no such luck.

Yeah, having three people drop will really screw with the balance of the game. If it makes you feel any better, though, their factories keep making things, do they didn't get the land for free or anything.

If you mean 'done with work' as in today, then jump in a game now as they can take a while to fill up and then there's a four-hour setting up period after that. If you mean it in the sense of 'I have a big deadline for next week' then absolutely wait until you have less going on.

Is the game 168 hours total? I wish there was some countdown timer or something in game. I think my game has about 14 or so hours left. God I hope so anyway. I think I can pull off the win if for no other reason than there isn't really enough time for me to be beat down. But boy is my map shrinking!

The 'week-long' part is a rough guide of what to expect - a game takes as long as it takes for somebody to mine 200 Neptunium or for there to be only one Queen remaining. Once Neptunium mining gets going there should be a countdown until somebody wins shown at the top of the screen.

Ask me about time-shares at scenic Turtle Rock!
Goon Game "Gently Caressing" just finished up. For the hell of it I wrote a quick post-mortem about the game from my point of view:

Days 1-3:
I make early peace deals with most of my neighbors since I would have extremely intimate borders with some of them and work out deals with just about everyone about which outposts I intend to take and focus much of my efforts on expanding north towards Hodapp. (Un)Fortunately Hodapp ends up AFK since the game started and Arbitrary, Tater_Salad and I start picking at his stuff. Hodapp makes one brief appearance after 20hours to build a mine, and hire specialists but then leaves for good after that. Arbitrary snipes his Queen that then leaves two inactive factories with 80 drillers that served as a large buffer zone between our territories that holds up for the entire game.

Jubelio mentions early aggression from Arbitrary and Russad but I wasn't really in a position to help him out since every one of their borders were far from me and I cant see where the action is taking place. Instead I take the opportunity to build a mine near Jubelio's border thinking its fairly safe with his focus elsewhere.

Days 4-6:
I continue mining but there is really no aggressive action taking place for me. My borders keep mostly peaceful but I'm still paranoid about stretching myself too thin. I manage to get a good mining lead going going but its clear that Arbitrary is getting stronger and its mostly a waiting game for him to eventually outpace me in mining speed. My specialists draws continue to be terrible and I acknowledge there inst really a whole lot I can do to stop him directly so I stay passive and focus my strategy for at least a 2nd place finish.

I observe ModeSix and SA Malt get into some odd skirmishes just within my vision. I reiterate the peace treaty with ModeSix that I'm still not going to attack him so he can relax to fight back. Their skirmish makes me more at ease about attacks coming from that direction.

Also during this time I accidentally leave one of my mines wide open to attack for about 20 hours and get extremely paranoid about Tater-Salad waltzing in to try and take it.

Days 7-8:
The writings on the wall and I realize that if I really want to try and win its time quit turtling and start a war!

Jubelio is rapidly losing outposts but tells me he sent a final "gently caress you" 179 driller sub at a mine of Arbitrary's which was at least 40 hours away. This is beyond my vision but other players tell me it probably won't be successful but I think it should at least occupy some of Arbitrary's subs to fend it off. I use this as an opening to try and steal a mine from Russad as this is really my only opportunity to increase my mining rate enough to sneak out a win from under Arbitrary. I'm told much of his Russad's forces are on another front so I plan the assault for the last possible moment to take a generator and mine from Russad and still possibly win me the game. The funny part about this was that since ModeSix ALSO started an attack for the same mine a few hours earlier he got the focus of the retaliatory aggression (Martyr) instead of me.

I also start planning out how to back-stab Tater_Salad and steal his one of his mines as well. As I'm working though the future attack he actually comes online... and I figure I'd just kindly ask him about taking it instead of just attacking. Turns out Russad was attacking his other mine and Tater just let me have the one I was planning on stealing anyways. Sometimes using diplomacy does work best!

My time machine shows me with a potential win but there was still way to much outside of my control. In the end though Arbitrary builds yet another mine and his Np production is too much to over come. The game was ended up extremely close and had I made some more aggressive moves sooner I may have actually had a chance at the end. It was a good second place finish and a fun game.

Nice overview. That game showed me that there is a big luck of the draw at the start of most games and I lost big time. Each of my outposts was spread way out from the others and I had a neighbor next to each one with at least 2 outposts closer so I had no opportunity for expansion. On the upside, I tweeted the subterfuge guys with a screen shot of the starting screen and they said they are thinking about doing a completely symmetrical mode for people that dont want to roll the dice(I suggested maybe not allowing a deployment that was so spread out but they seemed to like randomly screwing someone and forcing them into heavy negotiations from the get go).

Before official release they mentioned on their forums how they currently handle the map generation and specialist draws that at least seemed kind of reasonable based on the first reading. Not perfectly symmetrical but some semblance of balance.

http://forums.subterfuge-game.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=369

quote:

the map creation is not as simple to explain.

1. we create a blank map with an area that would maintain the same "outpost density" no matter how many players are playing
2. we randomly place N points on the map, where N is the number of players
3. these points repel each other so that they are arranged on the map in a reasonably spread out manner
4. we then add N*10 outposts at random positions
5. the outposts repel each other so that they become reasonably spaced out (but not uniformly so)
6. for each of the N points above, the 5 closest outposts become owned by a player, with the outpost closest to the point being the starting outpost of the queen (the rest are given 40 drillers)
7. we then randomly choose what percentage of outposts are generators. the range is 30%-60%
8. we build a "deck" of outpost types with the correct ratio of factories to generators
9. starting from each of the N points, we take the closest outpost and give it the first type on the deck, the second closest outpost gets the second card from the deck, etc. this ensures that players have similar resources available to them (don't want one player having all generators and another all factories)

when a game is created, it applies the steps above 500 times, and then picks the map that is most balanced. most balanced means that if all players send 1 driller to every outpost, the difference between the player that ends up with the most outpost and the player that ends up with the least is smallest. for smaller games (up to 6 or 7) players normally end up with identical outpost counts under the expansion algorithm above. with larger games (8-10) there's usually a 2 outpost difference between best starting position (11 outposts) and worst starting position (9 outposts). sometimes there's a 3 outpost difference (e.g. 12-9 or 11-8) but those are rare.

how's that? :)

You just seemed to have gotten screwed pretty hard if that was the best of 500 rolls.
