I'm really liking this game, but I don't seem to be very good at it. I keep losing fairly quickly. I must be missing some nuance, since I don't think I'm *that* bad at strategy. Or I'm just getting garbage specialists. Any tips would be helpful. I'd be up for a game if any are starting up.

It's important to use diplomancy with your neighbours from day one, and personally i think you should let the specialist options you are handed dictate how you play your game, eg if you get lots off offensive specialists be offensive etc. We have a game that is probably going to end in 35hours (unless everyone gangs up on pink, come on guys!) maybe we can start a new one afterwards.

For the most part the social aspect to the game is the most important thing to prevent you from dying. Always try and talk with your neighbors to work out deals for outposts and if you decide to go on the offensive that you don't try and spread yourself out too thin. As for specialists generally you can make something work if you keep an eye out for good combos such as navigator/pirate, princess/sentry, thief/engineer, diplomat/general, speed specialist/inspector/queen king/king/king and the like. Depending on what I draw I will change my play style accordingly. Also always take smugglers because drat I love having the speed to shuffle things around. Finished our latest goon game. Was a good run, and very close! I managed to squeek out first place even though Trinexx was something like 30 minutes from winning right after me. I was surprised you managed to grow so big so fast

I wouldn't mind getting in on a game but it'd be my first one. Also I can't for the life of me figure out the "Winning 2" puzzle. I think I have to grab all the outposts but I just can't figure it out.

But yeah... my growth in that game was a series of lucky circumstance. After I could see that my counter-attack on you was going to stall-out I just gathered everything and decided to push into Rather's territory. I didn't know this until after the game ended but Rather was dedicating a lot of resources into taking over Montvalo's mine and thus he had no forces to stop my attack. Also with the Engineer and the Hypnotist I had that stole 2 additional hypnotists from Rather and Engineerharry I had an amazingly efficient fighting force when I had the 3 Kings. There was idea I had briefly considered: To gift someone a King as an offensive maneuver since it seemed EVERYONE had stupid amounts of shields this game. There is a high chance of it backfiring but it was an amusing thought.

Yea, the specialist choices I had early on made it pretty clear I'd be playing defensively - I was really annoyed I made a stupid move that let EngineerHarry steal one of my Inspectors, otherwise I could have attacked somebody and immediately gotten a +20 boost on anything I took thanks to my 2 security chiefs. As it was I made peace with everybody near me and never got strong enough to be able to benefit from betrayal. Less frantic (for me) than some games but lots of fun as always

I opted out of joining the game this time since I am expecting to be fairly busy for the next few days at least. However since I'm a nerd, loser, and like fiddling around with spreadsheets... I have created one for when my games come close to ending to get a good idea of what the medal standings would be. I've been using it for a few games and I spent some time this morning cleaning it up and make it a little bit more user friendly and figured I'd share it here: Subterfuge Standings Calculator. If you'd want to use it, make a copy for yourself and go nuts. Its definitely not the cleanest (it might break in weird ways with a "0" for mining rate) but it worked for me. The bolded, white, bordered, boxes are meant to be filled with the game data to give you a general idea of how the game would end. I also added two iterations of simple if-then changes to mining rate some hours ahead that might be useful for questions like "Can I steal second place if I build a mine 10hours ahead and the other guy builds another 20 hours ahead?".

Two days into this public game we started and a guy I never attacked is sending every unit from every base at me along with another person I haven't attacked gifting him his units to add to the attack. Super fun. Edit: And now a third guy is quitting and gifting all his units to a single person and lowering his shields to zero. Is this normal for public games? Well that game was over quick. I saw malt getting bulldozed by 3 other players. I just kind of took the lead and no one attacked me and I won. So I'm gonna open another one soon in case people are interested.

The new update is pretty goood too, it allows annoymous games, so no usernames and no looking at peoples records. Which is good because it stops the best players getting together and making GBS threads on the newbies.
