Xbone and PS4 version are pre-cert in the hands of a cert contractor, so no date has been announced for the console version until they get back to the devs on where they stand in being able to pass.

The pre-release news press made it sound like there would be a simultaneous console release, but that ended up not happening. I've updated the OP.

This is a good game and anyone who has played other space game/rear end creed 4 should pick this up without thinking, add to that being $18-$20 this game is a steal

I think the biggest compliment I can give this game is that it's the first space game I've played that feels like the successor to the old Escape Velocity series.

I joined it in the tutorial area, jumped to the next area and there was a mission for me that paid out 1.6 million when everything else was 10-40k.

Thinkin' about hooking up the Fallout New Vegas soundtrack to this.

It was early in the morning when he rode into the town

"He's an outlaw loose and running" came the whisper from each lip
"And he's here to do some business with the big iron on his hip"

It's my firm opinion that very little could be not made better by some Marty Robbins, at the very least.

Is there a way to stop my ship from randomly slowing down during warp? Thought at first it was distance to nearby stellar objects but that doesn't seem to be it :(

Yeah, I'd say the game is much more Freelancer in spirit, though it incorporates elements from a ton of other games. Other than the upgradeable ship, I can't think of any way this resembles FTL.

That said, FTL is possibly my all-time favorite game, and I love this, so...

OK then, having never played Freelancer nor watched Firefly (well, except the movie) I'm struggling to place the genre. I take it the galaxy is completely static, with pre-placed everything? The depth is in exploring the richly crafted universe while customizing a giant mothership and blowing up bad guys/building a robust trading business.

Take Freelancer and make your ship the pirate ship from Assassins Creed Black Flag. That is exactly this game.

The universe is procedurally generated and there's all kinds of stuff going on with or without your interaction. There are also some handcrafted things, and the static story missions. Think GTA in space.

After watching some streams I really hope the game is moddable because this game screams for the Sulaco, Nostromo, and like every other huge ship from every movie to be in it. Total conversions for this would be amazing. Star trek, wars, BSG...

I think the combination of the Freelancer vibe and the Torchlight resume of the developers had me hoping for some mod tools, both are pretty moddable games. This one's going to require some community organization and long term affection to have mods for it.

Also the console ports are being done by a separate contractor, so anyone waiting for PS4 or Xbone releases should also wait long enough to get independent confirmation that the ports aren't messed up. It'll probably be fine but this has been the year of hosed ports...

Malcolm posted:

The genre is non-linear space sim, aka Privateer (though Elite was first). These days you might add a reference to "open world" but nobody oldschool would say that because the concept goes back to the days when almost all games were open world and nobody thought that was special.

In games of this style you fly around in space doing space jobs in your spaceship. Said jobs can include space-trucking, space-trading, space-mining, and space-shootin'-stuff. There are RPG elements: just imagine credits, equipment, and new spaceships are standing in for experience points, skills, and levels.

It can be a pretty formulaic style of game; the good modern ones do things to set themselves apart like great graphics & controls (Elite: Dangerous), incredible quantities of sperg detail (X3), or an interesting gimmick like the broadside capital ship combat here.

Sometimes when I arrive at a mission waypoint a friendly ship will be blown up almost immediately and I'll lose the mission. It's really annoying!

The cheap frigate(scarab?) With 7 turrets but only 3 broadsides is incredibly good. Load up with a mix of pulses, particle lasers, and one ion cannon and you won't even need to use the broadsides, the turrets auto target and murder everything.

I took the homing missile secondary so I can just mash shift when I need more firepower.

The game is cool and all, but clunky and simplistic is pretty accurate description of the combat imo. You don't even have to aim your broadsides, afaik it homes in automatically on whatever your target is and holding rmb just increases the number of shots that actually connect.

Doesn't really mean you can just charge in blindly and hope for the best, especially some of the random encounters can be pretty iffy.

Using the fault detector and mining lasers:

Pulse to detect mineral resources in a asteroid. if a asteroid is marked with the grey diamond, it's got something in it, likely metallic ore. If it's the correct asteroid type, when you saddle up next to it, it'll be dotted with red circular targets and your precision targeting with lasers will target them. You don't want metallic ore since it's one of the cheapest things you can get. What you really want is the exotics. Look for a oblong-ish asteroid with black rock and riddled with blue. That stuff will at least have obtainium, at most it'll have stuff like the Gozo Statue, artifacts and similar high value stuff. Don't bother with a rocky, metallic, or crystalline asteroid field if you can't find that particular type, the ice fields can be worth your time since I've been able to pick up pure water and meteorite diamonds from them. If you see a gigantic asteroid being set upon by a fleet of mining tugs - that's a golden opportunity. I encountered one and came out near 100k richer.

There's not much to it other than shooting stuff and buying bigger guns to shoot stuff. Pretty lights and cool music I guess. If you don't like the shooting part, you probably won't like the game.

Ambient music seems to be tracks that are just sound as opposed to music. It's the stuff that sort of sounds like wind blowing by default.
