I don't mean any pun, the guy playing him is just really good in the role. You can see the frustration mounting as this wannabe-Dane goes back and forth between being alarmingly useful and astonishingly foolish, and he keeps extending as much of an olive branch as his position and culture will allow him, and it keeps getting thrown back in his face.
