What's the one party whose whole deal was pushing oil development and exports and now that opec turned the tap on they're hosed

beer pal

bloc quebecois was doing pretty poo poo for most of the election until the niqab became an issue, at which point a lot of quebec ndp voters switched to them and the liberals... they might get a couple seats i think... dont think theres a real push for separatism at this point, though, its still in their platform but mostly just rhetoric from what i udnerstand. the parti quebecois is pretty much gone afaik e: oh parti quebecois is just a provincial party

Mostly only if you're from a French Canadian family. You can get away with 100% English in pretty much 95% of the country.

so Justin Trudeau, the most byob candidate won. I didn't vote for him,but pot will probably be legal in Canada soon.

he's also the wacky jokester at the bar. The social media era of politics is brutal.

Do you think he'll succeed or is that something that requires a huge majority? Like for example in the US, electoral reform like that would require a constitutional amendment (actually, a pretty major constitutional overhaul) which requires 75% majority.

Damp Star Baby

no, our system is cartoonishly flawed, and widely considered to be in need of reform. It isn't protected by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, so legislative action could influence at least how federal elections works relatively quickly. Provinces would have to decide on their own if they wanted to get rid of it. At the provincial level, where geographical considerations and sample sizes are less of an issue, FTTP makes a lot of sense in certain circumstances. A lot of atlantic provinces wouldn't see any major changes to its electoral results, but Ontario and British Colombia would get a much more accurate picture of people's voting patterns.

you shouldn't be able to win a majority with 35-40% of the vote tbh, and a lot of provinces hold a disproportionate amount of sway in deciding the outcome of elections at the federal level.

i hope they actually follw through - the platform item was kind of wishy washy wasnt it.. like convene a commission to explore the possiblility kind of poo poo... and now that they just got a majority off fptp they lost some of their motivtion...

As far as I know the electoral college is necessarily FPTP but it's up to individual state legislatures to appoint presidential electors however they want (which admittedly often or maybe always(?) is codified in each state's constitution). For senators and reps it just says "elected by the people" and "chosen every second Year by the People of the several States". We could totally change.

Sorry for the uspol derail.
