Black Friday deals are just comparable to pre order deals imo, but preorder is a bit of a dice roll, at least there are videos and reviews out now. Mostly because trade ins tank by then through Google or Google Fi, but you can still get deals at carriers or best buy I always buy my phones outright, there is no such thing as a free phone besides like Obama phones.

I like this pixel 8. Upgraded from a 7a. No complaints, screen looks good even in direct sunlight.

I planned on sticking with the 8 pro for awhile but I foolishly had it in my pocket around drilling and grinding dust activities and the scratches made a permanent smudge like pattern, this doesn't affect trade in apparently so I upgraded. That and beach sand seems to be the only thing that ever gets me.

Trying reactivating on my new phone when in cell service didn't fix it. Quoting myself from a year ago when I last switched phones and mostly yelling into the void here. But if you are using Fi and switch phones and run into an issue after activating Fi on the new phone, try pausing and reactivating service in the Fi app. This seems to happen to me because I don't have cell service at home and rely on wifi calling.

I've been a unicorn with Fi. I handed down my pixel 7a to my wife and picked up an 8. A few nights ago right before bed she was like "my phone is hosed up and rebooting and not charging." Next day she messaged me at work because her phone was bulging and she had it in a metal trash can in the yard. I messaged fi support, went through a pretty annoying exchange, gave IMEI and other info, got transferred to another person and gave photos of the device. They said they would send me an email in 24 hours with a decision. (The whole time I was like "hey, is this thing in warranty at all? Do I need to bother with all this?" Anyway after about 30 hours they emailed me saying they would exchange the phone and they were mailing me return packaging. Huh.

Yeah they replaced my dad's Pixel 3 XL that had a battery swell up. He's still using the replacement. He is paying $11/mo for the phone protection plan, though. My battery is starting to swell on the 4a 5G but I'm going to attempt to replace it myself and if I break something probably preorder the 9.

Been on a 5a since my pixel 3.. waiting to see what's wrong with the 9 but the 5a is getting a little long in the tooth. Honestly I could probably just get a new battery and it would be fine for a few more years. Since I never upgraded from the 5a to the 6 using the buy the phone and get a free upgrade my insurance isn't tied to my pixel 5a and the 4 times I've needed the screen replaced over its life I've had to fight with support in India because my insurance doesn't specifically say it's for the 5a... I have to explain that it's the only phone I have on the plan what else would it be covering.. then 20 minutes of hold music they tell me yeah okay and approve the replacement *eyeroll* It's actually quicker to just go to ubreakifixit since they're the registered Google repair company and they can get all that done through their computer in like 5 minutes. It's just a crap shoot if they have the part in stock or not. They even got me a free screen replacement that phone support didn't tell me about because my phone was known to have a weak screen on that manufacturing group and Google had already agreed to replace them if they broke. Phone guys never bother to do anything helpful like check recalls

It is pretty dependent on trade-in. Google store is offering me more for my trade in than the fi discount+trade in value, and then Google store credit on top.

I was just wondering why my work cell service got so much worse and after some troubleshooting I finally figured out "In February 2023, Google Fi and US Cellular discontinued their partnership, leaving T-Mobile as the only network usable with it in the US." Us cellular was the nearest tower and penetrated the buildings I'm allowed to use my phone in way better than t mobile Bummer, may consider a switch just because of that. What is the drat point of the dual antenna pixels if there is no network switching? Besides Wi-Fi calling and such

I need a little guidance here. I have Google Fi and a Pixel 7. I may be moving to Germany for work, for 1-3 years. I absolutely do not want to lose my number. I'm reading that I may be able to port my number to Google Voice while I'm over there, so it it safe. Then just get a local pre-paid sim? Any advice is appreciated!

That's what I did when I moved to Canada. My Fi number works just fine with GV here. For me the port took 24 hours, so consider that when you travel and pick up a local SIM.

Would it make the most sense to port my number from Fi to GV while I'm still sitting here in the States? Some google searches show people having issues when trying to do the port while they are in Europe.

I think I remember that being a stipulation of porting. So I'd say do it shortly before you travel, and if you need data between the time you land and getting a SIM just get Airalo on your phone's eSIM to tide you over.

Used the google store yesterday to get a 9 Pro (finally, a small pro phone, haven't had this since my Pixel 3) with $450 trade in on my Pixel 6 Pro, and $235 store credit. Not bad, made it 3 gens before upgrading, hope to do it again.

Does anyone use WiFi calling and have it work the majority of the time? Throughout several Pixel phones on Google Fi I am constantly having issues. The phone won't ring, but the call shows up in Messages for Web. Rebooting my phone fixes it for a bit, but then it happens again. There are some numbers that no matter what I do, they will not be received on my phone, but they will show up in Messages for Web. At this point I'm willing to change phones, carriers, hell, maybe even switch to iOS. Google Fi support is absolutely loving worthless.

Wifi Calling is hit or miss for me on a Pixel 7, to the point that I leave my phone in airplane mode when I'm at home. I have had zero issues with wifi calling while in airplane mode. I wish I didn't have to do that, and the phone would recognize that I get a lovely cell signal in the house, but it works.

I have had pixels and google fi for a while and wifi calling works fine for me, but - one thing you might try is turning off 5g as the preferred network. I've had odd things happen in my particular location with 5g, like my phone thinking it's connected but having to reset the whole comms stack to actually connect. In other geographical locations my pixel/5g connections works fine so YMMV.

That's good suggestions about partial/intermittent cell service. Where I'm at is pretty far from any sort of service, so I don't think that's it. Appreciate the suggestion, though.

So at the end of August I bit the bullet and ordered a 9 Pro. Unlike the XL there was a bit of a wait, and that wait keeps getting longer. Yesterday my 6 Pro trade-in decided it wanted to go into bootloop every time it was connected to a charger (cable or wireless). So now I have a business trip in a week and my phone no longer meets the trade-in conditions I signed up for, all because Google can't ship phones on time. To add insult to injury ProjectFi support chose violence and forced me through over an hour of bullshit just to file a replacement claim.

Hello Fi havers and experts, I have some questions that might not be covered in FAQs, including experience with it so far. I love my Verizon service, but the pricing is just getting out of control, so I'm going to start looking at other options. Particularly Fi. So far as I know, everyone currently on my VZW plan has compatible devices, but that's a bridge we can burn once we cross it, if we decide to do so, including a staged roll-out into the family. My current understanding is that I would want at least 2 of our lines on the top tier Unlimited, 50GB priority is more than enough. We both have smart watches, and we have other devices that have cellular radios. So the inclusion of data-only SIMs and smart watches would save us right out of the gate. For people that have large family plans: Can you mix and match types of plans? (Fake Edit: Found this in the FAQ - "Everyone in a group plan must be on the same plan") On the website, it only allows me to select up to 6 lines. Is that an account limit? Is there a way to get more (we have a minimum of 7 full lines, with an 8th coming when my youngest gets an actual phone)? Or would we just have to have multiple accounts? I think VZW allows up to 10 lines (not including 'connected devices'), so we're ok currently, but 6 isn't enough. Has anyone on Fi ever had the opportunity to have their existing devices on another carrier paid off for them (I know T-Mo will do this often)? Our lines are all on different cycles (mine is clear, wife's is almost clear, FIL's is clear, oldest and middle child are clear, MIL JUST got a new phone, etc)? So if not, then I would guess that we would do a staged roll out as individual devices are paid off, or pay them off when they get close. I'm going to do the 7-day free trial next week (I'm oncall this week, so I can't have my regular number not responding), but I wanted to get a feel for people's experiences, particularly anyone having come from VZW. The coverage maps look good, particularly in my area (which is interesting because VZW is utter poo poo in my neighborhood once I disconnect from the home WiFi), so I'll be doing a lot of running around to different problem areas to see how it handles them. I think that's it for now. I'm sure something else will come up in the next couple of days.

Fi is telling me there was a manufacturing issue with a batch of SIM cards, and mine may be affected. They recommended switching to an eSIM or requesting a free replacement physical SIM. Are there any benefits to one over the other? I've only ever had physical SIMs, and they've always been set-and-forget. I tend to stick with a phone and a provider until the wheels more or less fall off, if that makes a difference, and I've been using my own phone overseas for ages now.

I haven't gotten an email about sim cards, but I'm also using the esim since 2020 or so. You just sign in to the fi app and it switches activation to that phone on your plan. My old phone, if I boot it up to get an authenticator code or whatever, just has a notification from the Fi app that the phone isn't activated.

This seems like an insane deal, and also at the perfect time to replace my Fitbit that finally died. I'm still confused about this $0 per month "financing" option. I've read it a few times and I still have no idea how it's even, like, a transaction. I was going to try to get further details but the initial "credit check" that apparently isn't a real credit check, is still upset about my address for some reason, even though it was already pre-filled with what Fi has on file. Oh well. Guess I have 24 hours to think about it.

When you check out it shows as $0 to pay today and $0 a month (there's tax, I think mine was around $23). That $0 a month is contingent on you staying a Fi customer for 24 months, though. You're financing the remaining balance over 24 months but they are paying back that exact amount every month as well. If you left Fi, you'd owe them the balance for the financing option, afaik, or maybe they'd bill you monthly but not pay you back every month or something. I'm just gonna be on Fi for 2 years so I didn't worry about it too much. You can also pay the initial price in full (minus the $150 sale) and just receive it back from them as a Fi credit every month for 24 months.
