LOL if you only use c++ as c with objects actually, LOL if you use c++ [ObjectiveC supremacy]

i unironically use pointers to structs as objects in c. worksforme

the one addition to C that c++ made that wasn't hot garbage was strings

i've been doing most of my work lately in verilog it's kind of a nightmarish hellscape, and that's before you actually write to a chip

Ludwig van Halen posted:the one addition to C that c++ made that wasn't hot garbage was strings tbh i really like traits via templates. c++11 really went balls out with them and let you add all sorts of built in functionality by just defining some traits and then letting the preprocessor go balls out. its nice not having to implement an interface or modify your objects to add that behavior. well thast my 2 cents

learn c first, don't start with c++ c++ is utterly hosed up but you can cherry-pick a few good parts

learn c++ first but start with the part that's a superset of c

c++ is fine to use as long as you hate it. if you like it, you have a problem (and you likely don't know it well enough)

I think I used Visual C++ to make my aol Hacker Toolz or maybe that was Visual Basic. in any case it was totally sweet and I punted mad fools and lagged many a chat room

echinopsis posted:I don't get whys suck about c++ or is it the whole reality of tryif to build a whole program with it there's a good language in there somewhere, but it's buried under 30 years of weird mis-features and dodgy syntax. having to remain backwards compatible with c (except all the places where it isn't) has held it back, and now you're not allowed to fix any of these issues because woe betide you if it breaks some lovely code from 1986.

I thought C++11 made it perfect but then C++14 made it somehow even better, and the upcoming C++17 is impossibly even better than C++14
