I like how Bowie himself is on pretty much every album cover he's done.

Is that unusual? Bob Dylan is on pretty much every Bob Dylan cover. Madonna is on pretty much every Madonna cover.

Bowie's dismissal of Numan is pretty unfortunate, and almost ironic given that they both went to a Reznor-level music--Outside was Bowie's foray into that stuff, while Numan eventually turned into an industrial/darkwave artist completely. Funny how in 1984, Bowie was getting into more jangly stuff while Numan had just made Berserker, IMO one of his best records and more along the lines of what a funkier, robotic Let's Dance sound could have been.
Tubeway Army's Replicas and Gary Numan's The Pleasure Principle were most certainly doing that sound first, though a few albums after that Numan's mid 80s to early 90s stuff is almost unlistenable - he had tons of studio pressure for a more radio friendly sound, and even he hates Soul + Machine.

I agree though, it's interesting that Bowie and Numan both took on weird spacey synth rock in the late 70s, commercialized radio pop/jazz-funk fusion in the 80s, then took interpretations on NIN in the mid 90s, Trent Reznor being mutual fans with both of them. But while Bowie's career veered back toward contemporary rock and avant-garde jazz experimentation afterward, Numan never looked back. His last couple albums were great goth/industrial-rock/darkwave pieces, and Hybrid is a fantastic concept.

Bowie was a cut-rate Billy Joel imo. Billy Joel is effortlessly avant-garde, Bowie was just a tryhard.

Piano Man (even though it's overplayed and cliche at this point), Only the Good Die Young, Vienna Waits for You, You May be Right, and It's Still Rock and Roll to Me are the only songs by him I enjoy on any level. I will listen to arguments being made in favor of stuff like The Entertainer and Scenes From an Italian Restaurant, but they don't do it for me.

Regardless, when I think of Billy Joel "avant garde" isn't exactly what springs to mind as description. I think more of like..."that guy who did that horrible Uptown Girl video," which is about as mainstream and artless as you can possibly get.

To be fair both Bowie and Billy Joel did an album of songs they liked as kids (or songs in that style anyway), and both albums are pretty cool even if one is never talked about (Pin-Ups) and the other gets an unfair amount of poo poo (An Innocent Man).

Other than that Billy Joel is poo poo, yeah.

Oh my god everyone post the most underrated Bowie album in your opinion and let's drown this poo poo out.

I'd nominate Heathen. He put out some great stuff in the 90s, but Heathen is the point when I felt like the "real" Bowie came back. The sound is super-rich and lush, and it captured that alienated feeling I associate with his best work (in spite of the many guest artists and cover songs).

If it's already been done to death in this subforum I apologize, I hardly ever read it. Feel free to the last big Bowie thread and I will go away and read it.

5:15 and Slip Away are also very very good. I always wonder if the three odd covers (which I really like) were offputting to people, leading to Heathen being marginalized as a non-essential Bowie record.

I think it's half of an amazing album, the front side is really great but the back half is kind of a slog aside from the title track

Most underrated would be his first self titled debut.

Don't get me wrong. It's not great, but it's not as bad as people say. It has a lot of nice twee songs and it was a respectable effort. I just feel like some people dismiss the whole thing out of hand.
