Do you find something comical about my appearance when I'm driving my automobile?

Diet Poison posted:

I'm not sure I want the last mostly-done (if that) Bowie tracks to come out. They'd have to be completely recorded and produced with like a note signed by the man himself saying "yes I would release this to the world in this state, just waiting to get some more done to call it an album". Or else to me it'd be like when an author dies and their last unfinished work is finished off by someone else, edited without their feedback, and released. Doesn't sit 100% right with me.

I would trust Visconti to do it justice, since he worked with the man from the beginning of his career to the very end.

My attitude towards posthumous releases is that as long as they're done with respect, it's fine. There's no perfect solution, otherwise, when people died, stuff would just sit in the vaults forever, unheard. There's no perfect way to honor their intentions, since they may have ended up releasing something very different. Maybe they wouldn't have released those tracks. But on the other hand, would they also want their stuff to not be heard by other people?

As I said, I trust Visconti to treat it correctly and to not put something out there that Bowie wouldn't at least approve of.

I always wonder what would have happened if "London Bye Ta-Ta" had been released back in 1968? It was a pretty strong single, and it definitely was the kind of song that would have worked in his glam days.

This may be one of the first songs where I feel like Bowie is Bowie.

Best way is to buy a greatest hits compilation like "Nothing has changed" which covers all the way up to The Next Day (and technically Blackstar I guess). Make a note of the songs you really liked and then explore the albums they're from.

I really have to say this is the best way. His career is so varied that it's tough to say what you'll react to. For example, I love his Berlin stuff, but that leaves other cold. Plus, a compilation will get you Time Will Crawl and Absolute Beginners.

I forgot the self titled one even existed. I meant starting with Space Oddity, and going through Ziggy.

While Hunky Dory and Ziggy are great albums, Space Oddity (or Man of Words/Man of Music or David Bowie) and The Man Who Sold the World aren't that great. He's still trying to find himself and he hasn't really figured out what he wants to do musically.

actually they are both great albums.

I didn't think they were bad, but I don't return to them very much. SO is the better of the two albums, but they just didn't stick too strongly in my mind. Hunky Dory is when he gets it all together. It's the right mix of all the different sides Bowie explored.

I found much of MWSTW to be kind of forgettable. Nothing grabbed me beyond the title song.

Width of a Circle and All The Madmen are amazing songs and if they didn't grab you it's because you're a Bad Person who doesn't deserve the finer things in life.

Look, that's not fair. You already know I'm a bad person! That's just confirmation bias.

I do feel like his first album on Deram is unfairly maligned. It's not that bad. It's also not that good, and if it wasn't Bowie, that material wouldn't be available on CD outside of some tiny reissue label. The songs are twee, and you see little sparks, like the last track.

If it had a bit more teeth, it'd be a better album. As it was, it was a little too cute.

The "other Bowie" of Let's Dance, NLMD, Earthling, and Reality seems to always have been writing what he thought would appeal to contemporary live tour audiences, and suffered accordingly

Let's Dance is pretty good overall. But after that was a huge album, he just tried to stay in that vein since that was his first huge album in America where it seemed like every single hit big.

There's a lot of subversive stuff on that album, like Modern Love, which beneath the pop gloss is a pretty dark song. And some awesome sax work on the outro.

The vinyl artwork for Blackstar is amazing. It's all black, and it is a great pressing. Very quiet. It's very different.

I love Bowie and he deserves credit and praise but he wasn't as much of an originator as we think.

It's kind of like the Beatles. They were paying attention to what others did, and they pulled it all together in their music, but they weren't just coming up with all these ideas.

In some regards, it's like the saying - talent borrows, genius steals. Bowie took a lot of different stuff from a variety of influences. Everyone could see how Fame and Young Americans was inspired by American soul music, but when you're not familiar with the material, like the Kraftwerk influences on "Heroes," you might not realize where a lot of Bowie was coming from.

But it was his ability to stay on top of what was happening in music and to really understand it that allowed him to have a long career. "I'm Afraid of Americans" could have been embarrassing. People could think "Oh, hey, this 50 year old man is trying to sound hip and modern." And that takes a lot of talent, and genius.

Let's be happy he never decided to go back to this style though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dgmJjFUdwY

I think if they used the single edit of Young Americans it would have been better. The album version just rambles a little bit, and the single is much tighter.

Bowie was a cut-rate Billy Joel imo. Billy Joel is effortlessly avant-garde, Bowie was just a tryhard.

So avant garde that he spent his entire career in the middle of the road.

Most underrated would be his first self titled debut.

Don't get me wrong. It's not great, but it's not as bad as people say. It has a lot of nice twee songs and it was a respectable effort. I just feel like some people dismiss the whole thing out of hand.

They also started a retrospective box set series before his death that he had approved. So you're going to see a new one later this year, I'm betting (I'm guessing it will be the Berlin Trilogy with maybe Scary Monsters, but who knows). They are really good sets, but they don't have a ton in terms of material you can't find elsewhere.

Except the original Holy Holy.
