I have a not-very-well-thought-out theory that spacegames are particularly prone to irrational exuberance and hype because of the utopian mojo they've got going. Like Spore.

(Movies, too. Avatar made people feel depressed because they couldn't cope with not living on Pandora.)

Gamers are poo poo in general, but I rarely see this level of extremism elsewhere -- and it's an extremism about games which are "immersive" that they can get lost it and run away from their life/kids/problems/etc. NMS and Star Citizen are supposed to be worlds you can live in. Like that.

For example, I've read about horrible abuse in the fighting game community, but I'm not sure there are literal CULTS built around fighting games and the developers (am I wrong?). Or like fighting-game fans dreaming about immersing themselves in a living, breathing persistent fighting game world where they'll act out their E. Honda fantasy forever.

I was one of those kids who was too smart to pay attention in school, though of course that may mean that I am not as smart as I think I am. I am opinionated but try hard to do my homework as I do not like to be wrong. I know a lot more than most university graduates (see previous reference to 'opinionated') but because I didn't pay attention in school, have no papers to prove it. I am lazy but work smart so I have lots of free time. I can write fairly well but have yet to learn to pull my punches. I tend to be in a constant brainstorm state which impresses the bejeezus out of people I communicate with until the inevitable brain fart comes out, such being the problem with brainstorming. People like me a lot, except for those who don't.

I was raised by depression era parents who lived through world war two in German occupied territory, with Jewish last names (Cohen). Needless to say, my childhood was much influenced by their experience and some of that rubbed off on me. I have never been a survivalist per say, but I am vastly better equipped than most to survive much of what the world can throw at me.

I once lost everything but the clothes on my back, no insurance. My reaction was to laugh and chalk it up to a learning experience in the ephemerality of material things. Mental preparedness should not be underestimated.

My survival preparations have only ever really been tested once, and only for a week. I lived through the Montreal ice storm in the cold and dark for a week. It was hardly an inconvenience, catching up on reading. Meanwhile others went hungry and many died. Other than that, I once had to coordinate the partial evacuation of a hospital that had caught fire (I was responsible for ambulance dispatch). I was educated and worked for a time as a paramedic, so have some extra utility in that regard.

I can survive quite nicely for two months without ever leaving the house, even with all utilities cut off. I have gold and silver coin sufficient to effectively join a barter economy and pay a few bribes if need be.

Star Citizen is a game made for broken people, a way for them to buy respect.

This guy is desperate for people to respect him, he feels inadequate enough to post his whole life story online, cast in a flattering form.

Now comes star citizen, where, by spending some money, he can be a respected person. CIG, with its endless tiers of backer rewards, only encourages this.
