Value in relation to games is a topic that is not discussed often. When it does come up it however can be interesting. For example, Tony Hawk 5 is marketed at $60. Many people however agree that the true value of the game is more around $5 or less due to the bugs, boring atmosphere, and broken gameplay. The game being marketed at $60 is thus viewed as "disgusting" and "a way to cash in on nostalgia".

Is the value of Star Citizen worth $50 per ship?

It would be cool if the financials were released and we found out that they splerged all the money on non game stuff. You know, that's the point of getting a bunch of money. However, the backers would defend it with excuses like "oh we knew the risks" and "not all the money I pledged had to go towards the product being advertised, Croberts gotta eat."

The first game I can think of that really pushed that term as one of their big selling points was Hellgate: London. Funny that.

I don't remember Hellgate: London having any procedural generation. Hellgate: London didn't have true FPS elements either, but It called it'self an FPS Hybrid. It was more like right clicking from a distance since you could still "miss" if you were shooting at something with a gun from point black range and the dice roll game up 1.

There is a difference between proceduraly generated and taking individual items or sets from a list and distributing them randomly or according to a formula.

Torchlight, spelunky, diablo, terraria, starbound and others take blocks of tiles like 20X20 and the designer hand paints or fleshes those blocks out. Then they are distributed randomly (or by formula) in the game to create a psudo proceduraly generated map that still has designed elements to it.

Pure proceduraly generated design is just a chaotic art piece.

You mean like how Chris Roberts got laughed out of the movie industry for Wing Commander?

No, I mean like it's been made easier for some no name dude to pitch a loving grand idea with a couple of pictures or something and get some amount of money from suckers. Because Chris Roberts has a history in the industry actually makes it worse.

And the best way to get money from suckers is to tickle their nostalgia bone. Do you remember so and so from the past? Well just give me a bit of your money and that thing that you used to enjoy could come back and be better than it was.

Most successful kickstarters are not for some new idea. It's selling that nostalgia. Either this producer used to work for blah and he wants to bring blah back. gently caress remember blah! And it works, because we enjoyed it and we want more of it, but god damnit. Don't purchase chickens when they are still in the egg, because there is no guarantee that they are going to hatch.

It also depends on whether or not it looks polished or not. The concept artists and production artists will likely include their SC work in their portfolio, since it helped sell the game (in more ways than one :v:). The rest of the production staff, however, will likely have a single line on their CV and that'll be it.

Whoever did the space ships will be hired right away. It's really the only reason the game has sold at all.

I wouldn't fault someone staying at a paying job utilizing their abilities while looking for a new place of employment. I think it would make for an interesting interview though.

Yes, i think it's just the employees taking advantage of knowing that their boss has 43 million in paycheck money to hand out. They are just doing business till something else comes along that can be a bit more long term because this project is reaching the halfway/end mark.
