Hi Octopode, I'm a software developer. I don't develop video games so maybe I'm talking about my rear end here but lets say I wanted to make a space game the first thing I would do is make a list of things I wanted to do in my game. For example:

1. Fly spaceships in outer space
2. Seemlessly land my spaceship on a planet and exit my space ship and start shooting people with guns
3. Ability to have multiple player characters commanding / exploring / boarding a vehicle that is moving
4. Have a persistant online / MMO component
4b. Have a drink mixing mini game

To save time I entertain the idea of licensing an existing game engine instead of writing my own from scratch. This comes with one large caveat, I need to become intimately familiar with the limitations of the engine I choose. Of course, I shouldn't full commit to an engine before I'm abosolutely sure it'll do what I need it do, or at the very least, be capable (read: well written and organized code) of letting me extend it to suit my needs.

At this point I'd probably do a proof of concept. Spend, I don't know 4-6 weeks trying to to implement all the functionality in my list at the most basic level while making notes about what can't be accomplished with out further engine development and how realistic those change are. At the end of that time I should have some thing that looks almost like a very very primitive game and have a good feel for what is possible going forward.

I probably wouldve written things down like "Engine doesn't support 64bit precision", "Netcode is optimized for low-velocity, weakly predictable movement (like an FPS) and not high velocity, highly predictable movements (such as a spaceship flying through space)", "has difficultly scaling to more than 6 players on a server at once", "was it fun to play", etc.

Anyway, getting back to your post. If at any point I wrote down something along the lines of "What the engine provides and what I need to do are vastly different beasts" I'd probably at that point look for a new engine which better suits my needs, or decide that I should write my own engine from scratch. At most I've wasted a few weeks of my small dev team's time.

That is not what happened with SC, mainly because Roberts began making these decisions well AFTER deciding on using Cry Engine, because he realized the more poo poo he promised, the more money he can fleece from nerds. "ITS PRE-ALPHA" is such a retarded sentiment at this point, 3+ years on. The base mechanics shouldve have been in place (and fun to play) after a few months, or they should have been working on the engine in seclusion for however long it takes to get to that point. Instead they just keep adding more and more poo poo to the pile and poor idiots keep falling for it.

ps. i hope your wife is doing better

When you boil away the t-rex arms, allegations of insane money waste, genital shaving and hilarious Gary Old Man memes, it's just that the project was from pretty early on doomed to fail. The people who could have or did say no were removed and as long as there's money to burn, and they made tons of wrong decisions building the game that they've doubled down on while the money piles in.

I still don't get why more journalists haven't looked into what's actually going on with this game - either to confirm what's been said or to report that's everything is going fine. You would think that after the escapist article other journalists would want to get in on what it is a pretty major story in gaming, even if it were just to say "we've looked into this and there is no evidence behind the escapist and derek smart". There was that one Kotaku reporter who said he's heard stuff and that the escapist article was "unprofessional", but they still haven't touched it.

It's not like CIG is some major publisher where they would need to worry that much about a long term relationship, either. I know it's a lovely industry and everything, but that's precisely why I would expect a bunch of exposes for clicks.

Most websites lean strongly towards giving devs the benefit of a doubt while games are in development unless it's been in a duke nuukem style development hell, because when something is a retail/finished product its easier to criticize and talk about. Its murkier when games are in KS or early access and literally taking money before the game is done.

What is the big deal with TIE Fighter's missions, anyway? I remember the dynamic music and the nicer flight model and AI, but not the missions.

Tie fighter was pretty neat when you get a few campaigns in, and you're not just fighting against rebels and pirates, but getting caught up in Imperial intrigue. A bunch of missions have secondary and secret objectives that hint about an Imperial Admiral doing some shady poo poo that the emperor wouldn't like. In one of the most memorable missions, you are running a test exercise with starfighters from the traitor admiral when he announces he wants you dead and you have to escape with a bunch of tie fighters chasing after you

This is a great article talking about Tie Fighter and why it was such a big step forward from x-wing.

quote:

I completely missed the cloaked Secret Order member sitting behind briefing officer the first time he appeared in TIE Fighter. Focused as I was on the next mission, I just plowed right through to the hangar and completely failed to notice the shadowy figure hanging around in the background. But in so doing, I inadvertently missed out on one of TIE Fighter's more interesting elements.

The Secret Order, as I later discovered, served to offer a glimpse of the bigger picture. In the very first campaign, they have you inspect fleeing shuttles and cargo transports, darkly hinting that something may be amiss. And as it turns out, they're right. At the conclusion of the first battle, an Imperial Admiral is shown offering up his fleet to the rebellion ("For a price," he growls), and the stage is set for the traitor arc that dominates the latter half of the game.

The Secret Order perfectly embodies TIE Fighter's storytelling, which (like much of the rest of the game) has a decidedly minimalistic quality. In an era in which PC game developers experimented heavily with FMV cutscenes, TIE Fighter opted to use in-game messages, briefings, and the odd cutscene to get its message across. At no point does it feature the sort of sprawling cinematic sequences that came to characterize Wing Commander, and most of the background information is compartmentalized in the source material that comes with the game — this being when games still had manuals. For the most part, TIE Fighter prefers to let its actual missions do the talking.

It's something I have to accept, that people will never believe that, I've got this name as a wannabe, a Hollywood reject, whatever the term, you know, I was like that. Way back when. Wing Commander thrived off of all that bullshit, I got to loving hang out with Luke loving Skywalker for Christ sakes, so I do get why people think the Oldman situation was down to me, but it was Ben.

You have to understand one thing about Ben, he just wants to please everyone. He was a good guy and we still miss him. We honestly thought that bridge would hold.
Still, [jolting upright] Ben had this daily ritual where he'd come in, and yeah yeah yeah, he'd eat like a motherfucker, big surprise, ya da ya da. Anyway he'd always do the same thing every single day [laughs]. He'd eat his morning snack and out of the burger wrappers he'd do this weird scrunching thing, like totally screwing them up into tight little balls. We ignored it, as I say, nice guy, you let things go, whatever - everyone has their quirks.
So after a couple of months of this, like seriously, sixty days or so I finally give in and wait til he's away from his desk and go and have a proper look. [laughs] He's only gone and made the full loving cast of the Wing Commander Movie out of scrunched up burger wrappers.
I mean, all of them, all in a row stood there with these blank lifeless expressions on their mangled faces. [laughs] Man, all of them, Hammil up front and centre.

[Chris stops laughing at this point and goes silent for around 30 seconds] Then, then I hear it, from behind me. A slow, deliberate voice - "We can bring them back Chris, for real, we can bring them all back, all in a row, but alive. Like the old days Chris, just me and you. And them, alive."

That's the day we decided to build a bigger office."

These are fantastic and I love Chris Roberts as played by Elliot Gould from ocean's 11
