The Ace of Coins, the Hanged Man, Justice

The Ace of Coins represents news arriving, and from this news Derek is going to get hung up on something. The rope around Justice's neck is that from which he hangs.

I turned two more cards - the 10 of Batons on the Ace of Coins tells us that the news is that there is still a lot of work to be done, still many obstacles.

The World on Justice shows that he will be hung up by everything being as it is, or by the entire world.

The cards foretold these events. We just need to let the cards loving finish.

:smug:

Justice represents Legal and is preventing Derek from posting the blog, so he is stuck, hung up, as it were. He has news (the Ace of Coins - also, this might come from an insider, an "Ace") but there are obstacles to him posting. Legal owns his entire world.

I'm pretty sure like all things all their AI and animation problems are related to the fact that they hosed with CryEngine on such a core level that they're still not realizing the horror of the box in which they've tampered.

For example, AI has to "make decisions" by executing scripts based on triggers, but all of the AI is programmed to deal with 32 floating point precision values. The game is now feeding it 64 floating point precision values, which the AI has no idea how to handle. The triggers would then for example have the AI initiate a script or perform an action, but the scripts and actions are all assuming 32 point precision, so when the scripts execute and start interacting with the GPU and the rendering for the engine, they start getting wildly different values for their various steps, and that's why animations explode into masses of geometry - the animations are either truncating the 64 point values or only expecting 32 points and so they are no longer fluid.

Basically, the AI is completely broken in every way because they fundamentally changed the architecture of the engine in which the AI was designed to operate. Now they have to rewrite the AI from the bottom up to use the new engine environment, but they haven't or won't because they don't have anyone competent to write an AI, so instead they are trying to perform more alchemy on CryEngine's default AI to find every single instance where animations, scripts, triggers, etc. use any kind of floating point, and rewriting it entirely.

Because a lot of this stuff is not exactly just changing XML tables to say "hey use 64 floating points instead of 32 okay it's solved!!" it's not at all a trivial task, but Chris probably thinks it's a trivial task because the last time he was actually at all involved in this kind of thing was 16 years ago with the in-house built StarLancer engine, so he doesn't realize the complexity and involvement that goes into pre-built game engines like Unity or CryEngine or etc.

I love the shitizen theories about Derek. He's somehow simultaneously incompetent and ineffectual at everything he does, while also being capable of taking over entire companies by making a few posts on their forums, and amassing an armada of unthinking "haters" wherever he goes.

This is actually a common thing of scapegoats when use by populations. You have to create a scapegoated enemy that is both frighteningly competent enough to instill fear, but buffoonishly incompetent enough to be defeated. It happens organically quite often, but some of the best examples would be the Alex Jones kind of conspiracy theorists who believe that the secret global Illuminati is capable of managing all levels of government worldwide, but incompetent enough to not be able to silence a website. You also see it with for example Bitcoiners who believe that the banking establishment is competent enough to have entrenched itself for millenia, but powerless to stop Bitcoin. Trumpets who believe Clinton is a cunning and deceitful master of statecraft and a great manipulator who has played the American people for 30 years, but she's being brought down by Trump.

It's characteristic of othering and scapegoating and probably has a term for it in sociology or social psychology but I cannot remember what it is. But yeah, this is basic of all "in group - out group" dynamics and how scapegoats and enemies are established in the minds of "in groups."

In this case, the "in group" is Citizens and the "out group" is everyone else, with Derek as the scapegoat who is simultaneously responsible for literally everything bad that happens with Star Citizen, but also cartoonishly incompetent and always wrong at all times about everything.

I mean Star Citizen is just another, perhaps particularly ridiculous, but not at all unique, demonstration of group conflict theory and so on. Factors that contribute to group conflicts tend to be an often unconscious presence of ideas of helplessness, vulnerability, distrust, injustice, and superiority, all of which are present in the Star Citizen community. They are making the BDSSE (superiority). They are unfairly persecuted because they are free from publishers (distrust). They are seen unfairly or subject to injustice (same persecution from publishers). Feelings of vulnerability and helplessness come from the fact that they themselves cannot help the game development, so they feel a need to attack other games. The vulnerability particularly likely comes from self-consciousness over the amount of money they've spent versus what they've actually received. They are unconsciously critical of their own decisions so they feel vulnerable to criticism and therefore need to assuage this cognitive dissonance by quadrupling down on their beliefs and by associating all of their dissatisfaction or unhappiness as originating from somewhere else.

And, again, they need to feel capable and competent, but simultaneously cannot admit to being beaten by an inferior opponent, so they have to balance a single known enemy (Derek) as both devastatingly competent and dangerous while still cartoonishly incompetent and incapable.

Couple this with the fact that many of them on an individual level are unhappy already, and seeking the BDSSE as an escape from reality, and that the vocal defenders obviously care greatly about the project (genuine "who cares about money" whimsical backers aren't the ones populating r/DS), and you have a recipe for a witch hunt.

Hell, witch hunts are another great example of the above! You have to have witches who are simultaneously frightening and powerful enough to be a threat that warrants the hunt, but incompetent and weak enough to be easily defeated by Puritans with rocks or whatever.

The ridiculous thing of it is they're purportedly building them on the same engine, but all of that "your actual location in the ship is really there while the ship is moving and all the other people etc" nonsense is completely unnecessary for a single player game. It adds nothing and it increases the complexity of the scripts incalculably. It's straight up bad design with bad decisions being made every step of the way.

Like the immersion animations, which in fact are jarring and hurt immersion by forcing your awareness onto things that we do basically without attending to them in real life, this level of detail is like some kind of asinine noumena versus phenomena problem being exported to games. It doesn't matter if the dudes are really on the ship if the player perceives they are when the ship blows up. It's just a mind bogglingly bad, infantile way of thinking to think "the best way to make a player experience a thing is to actually do it."

Chris should know about these things having done the film making thing but instead he's the kind of guy who goes to magic shows and is like "wow that's amazing that they sawed her in half like that!"

Then he tries to do the same thing with maximum fidelity.

Stand up you victims of Chris Roberts
For he cares not for your name
Don't pay him till he does his job first
For you have nothing if you have no game!
Let not fools and their money be parted
For publishers make developers work
Kickstarted games are never really started
If you give your cash to some jerk

Refrain:
So shitposters, come rally
For this is the time and place
The mockery of Star Citizen
Is quickly gaining pace
So space gamers, come rally
The PU Verse won't be done
The Derek Smart July Blog Post Ideal
Unites us all in fun

There is no Star Marine this decade
Call of Duty will not be killed
So don't spend your money on a JPeg
Buy a real game and you'll be thrilled!
Even if they do release something
You can buy it then and there
But if you give Chris Roberts all your money
It will just vanish in the air

[refrain]

If Squadron 42 were finished
They would show real gameplay demos
We know instead that it's all just rubbish
Who needs to speak of MMOs?
There's no miracle secret dev only build
That's just a lie to pick your pocket
You've given money for promises unfulfilled
But CIG has just got rekt

He eats a buffet and calls people gay! His pants have got a tear!
He waddles on his way to lunch and mumbles everywhere!
And underneath his shirt he has Wing Commander tats!
I even heard him ranting on the forums!

He's always late for meetings, but his devotion is real
He's always late for everything, except for every meal!
I hate to have to say it but I very firmly feel Ben Lesnick's not an asset to CIG

I'd like to say a word on his behalf:
His body makes me laugh.

How do you solve a problem like Ben Lesnick?
How do you make him not hurt sales?
How do you find a word that means Ben Lesnick?
A two-ton-flesh-sack, a Wing-Commander-whack, a whale?

Many a thing you wish he hadn't posted
Many a thing you wish he hadn't done,
But even what Swofford does can't undo what he has said,
How do you pretend he's just gone?

Oh, how do you solve a problem like Ben Lesnick,
How do you develop spaceships without him?

When I'm with him I'm perplexed, by his gravity I'm vexed
And I never know if he's a person or a ham
Obsessed and uncontrolled, he's too easily trolled,
He's a grossout! He's a disciple! He's a bad!

He's outweigh any car, he'd out-natural any star,
He could set back a spaceship greybox by a month.
He is heavy! He's unsteady! He's uncouth! A manchild!
He's a nuisance! He's an addict! He's fat.

How do you develop spaceships without him?
