Ingredients

Ground Pilchard fish or bait fish
Anchovy Oil
Bread
Fine Beach Sand

Supplies

Bucket
Stirring implement
Scoop cup

Method

Mullet fish make great bait and can only be caught with cast nets. To get the mullet in casting range, throw these Mad Mullet sand balls in the water. When the balls hit the water the sand makes an irresistible cloud in the water and the resulting oil slick stays on the surface.

Mush up all ingredients except sand, then add sand until the mixture can be formed into a ball. Add some water if too dry.

Whether you pick 2011, when Chris was selecting an engine, or 2012, when the prototype was demoed, it doesn't really matter. There were no suitable licensable high-performance game engines available, whether with 32-bit or 64-bit spatial positioning systems that would have met the necessary wickets without requiring similar or more re-engineering work in one area or another.

The CryENGINE 1 was developed between 2001 and 2004, parallel to Crytek's first game, Far Cry.

The thing that usually stops an engine change for a project is having to throw away completed work and start again.

With SC none if it is in-engine yet anyway, it's all renders in 3DS Max. Isn't this the best time to just download UE4? :v:

This is the really salient point. Which engine they picked doesn't help anything when Chris decides that the boots on the marine character model are not up to his exacting standards, or that the Constellation needs to be re-designed for the 5th time.

And they have been solving technical issues with cryengine, but again that doesn't magically make a fun game or make their design choices not be steaming piles of dogshit.

No one is arguing or claiming that going with a different engine would have saved the entire project - more that its just another example of making the worst possible choice at all times. We dissect SC all the time in this thread, why are people getting angry about enginechat?

If it was UE3/4 it would still be a complete mess but it wouldn't have been completely ridiculous to choose Unreal in the first place.

The recent track record on trailers and jpegs is pretty bad, and that's all they've got.

The citcon star marine trailer was a disappointment even to the brown sea and Reddit and was quietly delisted from YouTube and never mentioned again. It was demoted from gameplay trailer to some QA testers messing around. Reality: people probably worked a crunch week to poo poo that out.

The weird black geometric alien ship had a red variant released and it was just a terrible photoshop covered in artifacts.

Now they're trying to pass off year old renders as new and getting caught out by reddit.

When CIG can't put out passable jpegs and staged trailers without the faithful murmuring from the pews then things are well and truly hosed.

Does the constant use of "blocker" annoy anyone else? I don't know of any other project that throws that around so much.

Lots of talk of excludiber breaking builds on the reddit threads, so as well as having no game they are also incapable of making a working build environment. I would _love_ to see the state of whatever CI/VCS they use. It's probably a screenful of folders on Bens desktop ending "use this one (2)" "use this one (8) final!" :yarg:

I'm no stranger to game dev, I've just never seen it so overused. Every other loving word is blocker, blockers, blocked. Someone needs to throw up a chrome plugin that replaces blocker with contrived excuse. I guess I'm being unfair, after all their new streamlined decimated more efficient dev team has been brought to a halt by one person getting injured so some blockers are to be expected.

All correct, more or less, with the added wrinkle of the current major issue being memory leaks, which probably wouldn't have shown up in the relatively short play sessions shown at Gamescom or CitCon. There's also just the normal fact of development on a large complicated system causing regression and new bugs as things are added or changed in general.

As for earlier comments people made about the FPS lead's broken wrist causing delays: first, CIG really does not have a very deep bench on the programming side and never has--I'd guess only about 10% of their team are actually programmers, and they are spread very thin over different chunks and systems, so a single loss is a significant chunk of their total manpower. I would be surprised if they have more two or three people who have worked on the FPS portions in-house. Secondly, programmers are not interchangeable, particularly when working primarily on bug fixing; it'll probably take a week just for his replacement(s) to get familiar enough with his code to be marginally effective unless he's much better than average at writing readable code.

Why don't CIG have a very deep bench on the programming side? The entire loving thing is founded on the belief that they're doing something so amazing that the tech to do it doesn't exist. They hype it up like it is some grand new avenue in computer science, yet with ninety five million us dollars they don't have many programmers? :downsbravo:

Programmers are interchangeable at this level. These people work in the games industry, that is already a specialisation. Sure, some people will lean more towards one thing or another but this isn't a D&D module - there are no hard Spaceship Programmer/FPS Programmer/Buggy Programmer/BLOCKER FIXER character classes. Being asked "Hey can you take a look at the issues assigned to Barry - he is off for a couple of weeks. The rest of the team can get you up to speed." shouldn't be a problem.

Oh poo poo, Barry has broken his wrist. Time to re-roll one of the people who majored in spaceships to be a bug fixer, should take about a week to level up. :gary:

tl;dr If your 95 million dollar software project crashes to a screeching halt and can't survive one person leaving then you are incompetent or the people you have hired are incompetent. Stop defending this house of cards and get a refund.

EDIT:

Octopode posted:

Programming stuff is inherently less parallelizable than stuff like asset development, and honestly less of a schedule risk for the overall game. It makes sense that they should be prioritizing asset development staff given their tremendous backlog and the manpower intensity of their assets. Between the two, the coding side is at a much higher completion percentage than their art side is.

The assets are behind the programming? Are you looking at the same project? They have nothing but a giant pile of assets and no loving game to use them in. They've probably got an Indiana Jones style warehouse full of Ben and CRoberts raved ramblings about the verse and how things should work, all anotated with concept art. None of it works.
