Maybe big enough to get an unhinged response from CIG. It doesn't take anything substantial to get these guys whipped into a frenzy. You could open a twitter account today and post something critical of SC and they would roll out in force to defend their favorite scam. But when someone with a little bit of notoriety posts something - watch out. It's going to be a poo poo-storm. A very hilarious poo poo-storm.

Beer4TheBeerGod posted:You have to understand, their passion isn't about a video game. It's about the dream associated with that video game heavily reinforced by a massive sunk cost fallacy. Comparisons to faith and religion aren't out of the question. Some people believe in Jesus, some people believe in thetans, and some people believe in Chris Roberts. This has been intentionally reinforced by a marketing scheme designed to focus on that connection and belief. CIG intentionally avoids revealing anything concrete about the game, keeping things as ephemeral and subjective as possible, so that backers will fill in the blanks with what they want the most and subsequently pay for it. That's why two different people can have two completely opposite views on the game and still fund it while expecting their dream to come true. An essential part of that dream is protecting it; the mental construct surrounding Star Citizen is incredibly fragile. That's why people are so aggressive in attacking dissent, and why CIG is so rigorous in purging "toxic" members from their forums. Doubt and faith cannot coexist. Everything must be explained in the narrative of the game progressing well. Frankly it's impressive how well CIG has done it, particularly with respect to vilifying Derek Smart. Instead of ignoring him they turned him into The Enemy, convincing backers that he's such a threat that they should give CIG money in spite of him. Every critic is an alt for Derek Smart. Every negative post an attempt to push his agenda. It's amazing. What's telling, at least to me, is the level to which negative opinions are silenced or verboten. Even just the tiniest bit of questioning a CIG decision or a dissenting opinion to the group-think is completely forbidden. There is ample evidence that this has been a longstanding policy, but it seems to me that it has gotten worse over the past few months. If you aren't on the "BEST drat GAME EVER" train and completely devoted to that line of thinking, there is no room for you in their "community". Further, they've created their own hierarchy, where the more you spend on the game the more respected you are within that community. While this is dangerous in any community, it's especially dangerous in the community of a game that hasn't even been released and has the most ridiculous and convoluted development process ever.

Tippis posted:It was even more unintuitive in its map design and had god mode. Having no sensible way to move ahead and no real enemies gets boring after a while. One of the things that Frontier has done very well since their start was to design a clear path of development and put competent project managers in place to keep things moving along and within scope. From what I've read (and it's general good PM practice in all industry), if people come up with other ways to expand game play or to improve/add features, they take it under consideration for future development and continue on with the scope as is. Now we are starting to see a lot of these ideas that have come up during development start to get their own paths on the development tree and slowly coming to fruition, without slowing the core development of the game. Compare and contrast that with SC and CRoberts - someone has an idea, Roberts make it his own and it's promised to the community without any movement on the development path. This actually slows down development because you have made the entire pathway completely vague and overfilled with vanity items and other features that just simply won't work in any context.

Well, at least before SOE turned it on its head and starting loving with everything that was cool with the game. But yeah, when the JTL expansion for SWG came out, they did a pretty good job of doing space combat. It wasn't perfect, but it was playable and good for its time.
