There's a .00001% chance of an M1 SOC in an Apple TV. That's overkill for Apple TV and would drive up the price. If you want something like that, buy a Mac mini and hook it up to your TV. This would also solve your Xbox Game Pass problem. I realllllly don't think Xbox Game Pass will come to Apple TV as an app for multiple reasons. Maybe one day Safari would come to ATV but I doubt it. It's the same song and dance every couple years from them. They'll do something to indicate they're serious about gaming and nothing ever comes from it. But I'm a super casual gamer with very limited tastes related to what I grew up with (play experiences like Doom, Quake, MK, SF, Twisted Metal, Nintendo games, etc.) and I haven't gamed seriously in over a decade so I'm super behind the times. If you're an RPG fan or somebody who branches out more than me there might be something awesome on there. I think the biggest thing they could do if they actually gave a poo poo would be to pack a controller in the box. People are expected to play a game like NBA 2k21 with the loving Siri remote? I'm one of the few who likes the Siri remote, but it's absolute dog poo poo for trying to play a game. Throw a loving controller in the box and you'll get a lot more people playing. I have Apple Arcade, grew up a gamer, and even for me buying a controller is too much friction for me to get invested in their game selection. If your competition is charging $49 for their streaming box and you're charging $200, you might as well throw a $7 controller into the box if it will help prop up your gaming service.

I actually have Apple Arcade but never use it. We were paying for Apple Music family subscription plus extra iCloud storage so it made sense to just pay the $20/mo for the Apple One subscription which includes Arcade.

If you haven’t checked recently, they just dumped like 80 new and classic games to Arcade and there are some real great ones. Some, like the music quiz, are great because there’s an obvious boost in quality without all the IAP. Others, like the golf game by the Hot Shots Golf people, are just great. Surely there’s something worthwhile in that pack on Apple TV.

It's like a wholesome and adorable version of the original Grand Theft Auto games. It also runs fine on my ATV Gen4 non-4k. I'd just like a faster CPU for stuff like Spire Blast and any other physics games, even if it was the CPU from the iphone 10 or whatever that'd be great.

Definitely try out Fantasian which just came out and is by a bunch of OG Final Fantasy people (Mistwalker + Nobue Uematsu). It's a really fun nostalgia trip with a lot of the typical tropes.

What are the odds that Apple wants to get serious about gaming by making a Google Stadia-type streaming service? I have always ignored rumors of Apple getting into gaming but game streaming with a monthly service seems exactly the kind of service Apple would choose to go with if they were gonna actually enter the market.

I can't speak on any others, but I don't think 48 fps Hobbit has ever been released outside theaters. Maybe by piracy, but idk. My guess is the answer to whether a current AppleTV can play them natively is "no".

120fps output would be neat because it would mean you could display 24, 30 or 60 fps content without having to change the output framerate, just by using integer repetition. HDMI 2.1 with VRR would be preferable ultimately (although maybe not? I don't know if VRR can go down to 24), but this would work.

Crap like this is why the HDMI 2.1 spec is such a mess: most of the interesting features are optional, so HDMI 2.1 only tell us something about throughput capability - and that wasn't even the case for the receivers with botched Panasonic chips. Just start naming it HDMI 2.1vqa or something for each feature at this point. Maybe we'll get stickers with "Full HDMI 2.1" to brings us, well, full circle. That does not mean I wouldn’t get it and then only use the base tv features though. I would likely just grumble a bit before getting it.

Honestly just a better/more robust implementation of Airplay for Homepods would make me very happy. It’s dumb that each app wants to have their own stupid loving interface for playing videos, so some of them have you swipe down to select an audio output and others have no option to do so at all. Google has the worst loving apps on AppleTV, followed by Amazon.

$179 for an actually working piece of technology is not super expensive and I don't get why people think it is. The main reason anyone thinks so is their competitors are happy to sell them as loss leaders and recoup that money selling ads. The good Shield is $200 and I don't see people constantly crying about how "overpriced" it is.

I feel like integrating a screen and speaker into the Apple TV is a completely pointless exercise when that would ultimately boil down to just them selling a gimped iPad (at a time when the iPad Mini is meant to be getting a new version) so I don't see the point of it unless someone at Apple is really feeling aggro towards Facebook and wants to crush the Portal.

It sounds more like the rumors of a HomePod version of a Google Nest Hub than anything else. Though with a big enough screen, it would blur the lines between smart speaker and smart tv.
