Is there a HomeKit thread? I’m trying to figure out why neither of my Apple TVs show up in HomeKit.

Oh lame. I was hoping to use the HomePod to tell Siri to turn the Apple TV on and open an app. Guess we aren’t quite living in the future.

You can do that... if you have a Harmony remote and set up Homebridge to control it. (Though opening a specific app is unreliable.)

Ah ok well I don’t think I’ll go that far. It just seems a little odd that you can’t do that though.

I do love my 4K box though.

Altos Adventure is great fun on the big screen.

I’ve been annoyed by the 2 or 3 second black screen flicker when going from the Apple TV menu to a video ever since I got my 4K TV and ATV 4K. The last straw was watching MLB.tv and their cool new “Catch Up” feature where if you want to watch a game already in progress you can choose “Catch Up” and it will show you quick clips of all the big plays in the game so far. They’re typically like 7 second clips so the 3 seconds of black screen every few seconds were maddening.

So I turned off “Match Dynamic Range” and my life is a million times better. Does this mean that everything is forced into HDR or nothing is showing in HDR?

Hmm I haven’t noticed that when using the catch up feature. I’ll try it in a few and see if it does it on my LG 4K

Side note the catch up feature is an awesome addition.

That’s neat. It’s like a new version of OnLive, yeah? That was a service I thought would run terribly, then was insanely surprised how good it was. Shame they mismanaged themselves into oblivion, because it should’ve been a hit.

Kinda but not exactly. It uses your PC to run the games so you don’t pay anything for the service and you can run pretty much any game that steam has.

They don't want you to just name it "Apple TV", because AirPlay is region-based and not limited to a wifi network. So if you live in a neighborhood where there's multiple households that own Apple TVs, you can see other people's. Sometimes when trying to connect to mine I see a neighbor's, which is named "Royal Chambers".

If theirs was also named Apple TV and it caused confusion... I still wouldn't be able to play media on it without confirming with the four digit PIN, so it's not like you can play 2girls1cup on a neighbor's TV. But it's possible their Apple TV would power up the display via HDMI-CEC to display the PIN when you connect to it. I don't know if it does, but if it does, that would be really annoying at 2AM. It's still possible if you're trying to intentionally troll an Apple TV that isn't yours, so I'm guessing it's not, but this is the company that rolled out AirDrop without imposing any sort of limits on who around you can share data.

I live in a row of townhouses and I used to have a roku 3 before my ATV4k. I learned the hard way that the Roku was set up out of the box to let anyone access it.

My S/O was working at home when someone decided to start playing porn on our TV. So yeah...

I am happy wit these minor updates really. I really like my ATV4K its a great little box. I tried to go cheap and get the high end Roku 4k and it really was just s poo poo show. It wouldn't do HDR to save my life and the PQ wasn't nearly as good as the ATV4k.

Yeah the ATV is more expensive but really you kinda get what you pay for here. Add in the Airplay 2 stuff its just that much better at this point.

My apologies if this has already been covered, but is there a way to temporarily change your iTunes account to purchase content in other countries? I've seen some guides for switching iTunes region, but most of them also involve creating dummy accounts, and I really want this in my main library. Any options?

You could! Do this

https://support.apple.com/en-us/ht202915

Buy it on a service that puts into your movies anywhere account and then it should show up in your iTunes account.

You can buy a code from a site like this.

Yeah, I saw something about that. I think chances are that they do replace it for free. Even if they don't, my 12-month promo contract with Comcast just ended yesterday and now I'm paying $115/month for 100 mbps internet, a dozen local channels, and HBO (which I don't care about). Since I've got a Verizon phone plan, I would be paying $50/month for at least 300 mbps. I would also get the first three months free, get an upgrade on my streaming tech with this free Apple TV, and I could just get a cheap digital antenna to get the local channels back.

So, honestly, I think they'd have to be charging at least several hundred dollars in changeover fees for the equipment swap for it to come out to the same cost, and I'd still have way faster internet.

The only thing I wish I could find is a blog or vlog post from someone else in one of the test markets who has actually gotten it installed to know a little bit what that looks like. I saw a local news clip that made it look like there was basically a little dish being installed on the house's roof, which would kinda suck, but it's not that big of a deal (especially since both of my neighbors have their own dish for their DirecTV subscriptions, so they couldn't bitch about it).

drat this sounds awesome. I’m in LA which I guess they were supposed to roll this out to but not for me yet.

Seems much better vs spectrum at this point.

This poo poo changed the game in my house. We used to have to have multiple remotes for various things, now we only need one. I got it a year ago or so, still works without changing battery-- not a single complaint.

It also gives the remote a little bit more heft so you don't feel like you're slinging around a baseball card. But most importantly, it attaches to a single side which means when you pick up the ATV remote you never have to flip it around because you picked it up upside down which was ANNOYING.

My Apple TV remote already controls my receiver and turns the tv on and off though.
