How can you be a Trails fan and not remember Anton?????? My head is shaking so much that people around me think I'm having an involuntary neck spasm. ... Anyway... You first meet him when Estelle and Joshua arrive in Grancel in FC. The link below contains some info about him, but hasn't been updated to contain his SC-part yet. http://trails.wikia.com/wiki/Anton In SC, you first meet him again at Sanktheim Gate where he was nearly killed after an earthquake hit the checkpoint while Anton was standing on the battlements pondering his life. After concluding that his life still sucks, he spends some time blocking the staircase there by lying on the floor and moping. He eventually gets over himself and decides to go on a journey of self-discovery, resulting in him and his friend Ricky taking the same airliner to Bose that Estelle and the gang take after Chapter 3. They get stranded in Rolent due to the fog where Anton promptly falls in love with Aina. He requests your party's help in gathering ingredients for a concoction that prevents intoxication so he can go out drinking with her. Your party agrees and Schera drags Aina off to the bar where Anton and Olivier have a drinking duel with Aina. The whole thing backfires when it turns out that the concoction only works when the correct amount is consumed and Anton and Olivier splitting the medicine causes it to wear off too soon, causing both of them to collapse in a drunken stupor while Aina doesn't even get red in the face. The last thing you see of Anton that chapter is him sitting in the bath tub of their hotel room, puking his guts out. Apparantly he and Ricky appear in Crossbell too in that arc. Anton is kinda like the Trails series' butt-monkey. I did spot Anton and Ricky in Heimdallr at Dreichels Plaza, but I'm ashamed to admit I missed him in Bareahardt. Where did he turn up?

Levantine posted:Oh, one question - where are the shining pom baits best used? I got 3 from some patch I think and they are just sitting there. Do they scale to your level or are they best used in early chapters? I've read that Shining Poms give everybody a single level no matter when they're used, so save them for much later.

So after hearing so many positive things, I'm thinking about trying the Trails games for the first time. Any recommendations on where to begin? With Trails in the Sky or Trails of Cold Steel? Also, should I play them on my Vita or on Steam? Are their problems with the PC port? Are the games conducive to handheld play? Forgive me if these are ignorant questions but I know very little about this intriguing series.

You can save anywhere but the games are fairly meaty JRPGs, so iunno how conductive they are to like 30 minute bus rides. They're nice to relax with in bed though. Cold Steel doesn't have a PC port. The PC ports of Trails in the Sky FC and SC are probably the definitive versions, they have touched up translations and a few quality of life features. Either one is okay to start with. Trails in the Sky FC has an incredibly slow start, though, so maybe start with Cold Steel if you want something that at least sort of gets the ball rolling.

What Endorph said although I'd probably recommend starting with Sky since it's both the intended order and it's a little dated next to Cold Steel so it might be hard to go back. Also its cheaper than CS

Also TitS FC's slow start is extremely good IMO, and part of what makes the TitS so nice. I'd recommend starting with it (although you missed it being $10 in the Steam sale).

Trails in the Sky has characters I like more but Trails of Cold Steel's gameplay is several steps above in almost every way. I'd start with TitS because going backwards would be awful. Edit: Also TitS is finished while ToCS is currently in cliffhanger town until part 2 comes out.

Thanks a lot for the prompt responses. So the PC versions have a different translation and different features? Right now I'm leaning toward the Vita version for sheer convenience sake. My Vita has been quite the little RPG machine for me. So many PSONE Classics.

PC version has the same content, although it has higher resolution assets, better frame rate etc. The translation for the PC version wasn't a retranslation but rather just a second editing pass on some stuff

The PC Translation is cleaned up but is like 90% the same.

Definitely start with Trails in the Sky. Cold Steel spoils several things about the Trails in the Sky games, but the inverse isn't true.

Cold Steel's first part isn't bad overall, but I do hope that its better game play is eventually put with an even better cast of characters whenever part three finishes it off.

But I heard the president of Falcom said that the series was ~60% done after Cold Steel 2, which makes it sound like the Calvard series will be the last one. But who knows, really.

I get a little thrill anytime anything in TitS is mentioned in cold steel. Chapter 2 Blueblanc running around was kinda interesting considering how he ended Second Chapter, but his conversation with that Bracer was cool because it sounded like an Estelle/Joshua namedrop without the names I think you can play Cold Steel without having played the others but having the background certainly enhances the experience.

Does FC Evolution for the Vita have the nicer visuals the PC version of Trails has? I'm just curious about it. Playing it on the Vita is fine but it looks really blurry to me and kinda bothers me.

FC Evolution looks way better than the PC version.

i'm pretty sure FC Evo has assets at the vita resolution while playing the psp FC on vita is just upscaling the psp resolution, so yeah it'd look better. it's also not in english if you weren't aware

Something about the new art assets puts me off there, kind of like the supposed "graphical updates" for old games on smartphones and poo poo. The actual menu looks fine but stuff like the status bars/numbers looks... eh

if you don't dig the art that's one thing but are you really comparing it to the completely incompetent squeenix mobile ports, lol

I'd have to see more of this to make a solid conclusion though because that's the first time I've seen it I guess I'm just kinda hesitant of graphical touchups after stuff like the PSP FF ports

i like the artstyle in the originals a lot better (and I just like them a lot in general) but i'll never play Evo so I don't care much also as much as i like them occasional yoh shiina just misses the mark entirely with the originals, estelle's FC status menu art is awful. SC's is good though e: i'm just talking about the characters, not menus and stuff
