You are 100% fine without playing zero/ao before any of the cold steel games. Obviously it would enhance the experience with the added context but the games explain themselves just fine. The only thing is that it is kind of harder to get back to the crossbell games after the erebonia games as the gameplay and quality of life features are inferior in my experience. I rather take the broken messes of the cold steel combat systems instead of having Lloyd evasion tank the various AP bosses while Ellie casts Spark Dyne for a hundred turns.
