Can anyone who is playing Trails SC on PSP/Vita tell me if it is easier on the eyes compared to FC ? I felt that everything was just a little smaller than it needed to be for me. (fonts, icons, enemies on the field)

I really, really want to play this on Vita but I imagine it's exactly the same engine as the first game so I'll get it on PC if it means I can salvage what's left of my eyesight.

Just finished SC.

I LOVED it !

I consider FC to be an average game at best, but SC more than makes up for it. I'm going to bug everyone I know to get them to try it. The dialogue was great all-around, fantastic localization. It's even made me like characters I wasn't fond of in the first game.

One thing that did annoy me was the final boss having 3 forms. None of them are especially dangerous and it's not like you can't beat him if you got past Loewe anyway, so it was just a waste of time. Watching the rear end in a top hat die was satisfying though.

I guess it's time to start praying to Aidios for the third game now.

Also, I encountered a somewhat annoying bug in chapter 9 where it was impossible to navigate the menus with a gamepad, had to use the mouse to click the various choices. Just pointing that out to help anyone who may run into this issue.

So, now that I've had time to think about SC some more, one thing I liked was that the numbers assigned to the enforcers seem to match tarot arcana that are related to their personalities or their past.

Enforcer spoilers. Don't read if you haven't finished the game.

Joshua: 13, Death. It can represent both his past as an assassin and also the end of his life as the Black Fang.
Bleublanc: 10, Wheel of Fortune. I don't really see how this one works, except if it was just taken because luck fits roguish characters.
Walter: 8, Strength. Pretty straightforward.
Luciola: 6, Lovers. Made plenty of sense after the final battle with her if you have Schera in the group.
Renne: 15, The Devil. This one I feel is a bit more complex but it's probably that she has the power to leave the society if she wants to but remains with them because she finds it easier to solve problems with violence.
Loewe: 2, the High Priestess. In reversed form, it represent him wanting to see humanity tested. His change of heart after he gets his "answer" is the card getting turned upright.

Wow, Cold Steel doesn't waste any time showing you just who you're going up against and a lot of what's going on must be quite unclear to people who haven't played Trails in the sky. I'm only halfway through the May field trip and while I have a good idea of what the society is most likely going for, I can't wait to see what stunts BleuBlanc will pull.

Which makes me wonder just how much I'm missing from not having spoilered myself on the games that are not translated yet.

Let's take this thread back into trails in the sky territory to discuss Joshua and Cassius for a moment.

Right at the beginning of SC, Cassius tells Estelle that he was almost killed by Joshua when they fought. Yet at the end of FC, Joshua had a very different version of that story to tell, and that version seems to fit a lot better with what we're shown at the beginning of that game.

I think what Cassius meant was that Joshua almost got the drop on him, and he believes that if that had been the case, he would have died. It didn't and he was able to defeat Joshua because he was a much stronger fighter. This would be consistent with a comment Joshua makes later in SC (chapter 6 I think)regarding his chances of winning against Loewe in a straight fight being almost nil.

That's the explanation I came up with, but I'm interested in hearing others ideas.

SpaceDrake posted:

The writing intention, for what it's worth, is that they're both upselling the other; this is true in Japanese and it was preserved in English as much as possible. (It does read a tiny bit more "dramatically" in the printed English version of Cassius' take, but even in the most literal reading possible of the Japanese, his perspective is still that the whole thing was a hell of a fight, not just the opening blow.)

This is just Editor's Suspicion, and shouldn't be taken as "canon", but the way it went down was probably something like this: Joshua gets the ambush and does come really close to killing Cassius right there. Cassius manages to survive but is struggling from a disadvantaged position for a while, partially out of pure surprise and partially out of the different sort of surprise that comes from a preteen trying to murder you. Eventually, however, J just can't keep up the offense against someone who is, even then, a Eight Leaf Divine Blade and eventually is defeated. Cassius then saves him from the "retaliation" of J's Ouroboros comrades (which we now know was part of the ploy).

Basically, it was probably a hell of a fight either way, and they're both trying to make each other sound better in their versions. That's also kind of a Japanese thing to do, in a way, so I sort of wonder if that just doesn't quite cross the culture gap by default. :v:

Thanks for the info about the japanese text, I appreciate getting your take on this. The only thing that remains a little weird from my point of view is that at the beginning of FC, Cassius doesn't look hurt at all while Joshua has a little wound on his portrait. Obviously, Cassius' wounds could be under his clothes and there is no way he'd go home to his daughter all bloody and half-dead but, appearances, at the very least, made Joshua's version of the story appear more credible.

So, I just finished the events after clearing tartarus in Cold Steel chapter 4 and I have a question.

Since this is a Falcom game, is it safe to assume that red eyes and red text mean the same thing as they do in Ys ?

I'd rather not be spoiled too much so a simple yes or no answer would suffice.

The problem with SC is that it has many good characters but you've got two slots that are locked to the protagonists so you can only bring 2 other people at a time.

Cold Steel kinda solves that with the reserve slots but the characters are not as likable, so you always take the most broken ones.

Finished Cold Steel yesterday.

I got roughly 50% of my guesses right, which is actually above average for me so I'm going to credit my successes to paying attention during this game and the trails in the sky chapters. Spoilers for the whole game follow.

I deduced that Sara was a Bracer and Sharon was an Enforcer right away. The game starts dropping hints pretty early on but, especially for Sharon, it would be hard to guess without knowing about the society beforehand and Cold Steel gives you very little to work with in that regard.

I expected Millium to be the traitor, as I am still going with Olivier's assumption in SC that Osbourne is a bad guy. In hindsight, I feel pretty silly that I didn't interpret the hints correctly during chapter 6. I remember thinking that Crow would have to be pretty exceptional to escort the miners on his own and survive a cave-in. When I learned that Crow had gone to Heimdallr, I just assumed he was going to appear at the chancellor's side during the speech and possibly be revealed as an Enforcer. Yes, we know that Ouroboros is collaborating with the ILF but I thought Osbourne was in on it too and just using them to further his own goals. The C thing only clicked when Millium said that Crow had won this round. It wasn't all bad though, it allowed me to be shocked alongside class VII.

My hypothesis about Rean having a secret demonic side seems to have been off but not as much as it could have been. I'm assuming Loa Erebonius was that power manifested and that didn't look like a benevolent entity, although it could be a neutral one.

I was a little disappointed with how little everyone's favorite phantom thief apparently did in this game but I was glad to learn that he's still active. I guess at least he did drop the hint about Sara being a bracer pretty early on and he also told us that Clotilde is an Anguis, which probably didn't make much of an impression on anyone who hasn't played TitS.

I ended up liking most of the protagonists. The big exceptions for me were Emma, for reasons that would need spoilering, Machias, who never really recovered from his first impression and Millium.

So I guess I'll be waiting for CS2 now. Thankfully we shouldn't have to wait that long.

Don't feel bad about that. While I became suspicious of Crow after that part in the mines, I actually thought that he was going to be revealed as an Enforcer and Osbourne's right hand man until Millium flat out said that he was C.

You'll get some more when you start your NG+ so no harm in using them in your current game. The best place to use them would probably be level 1 of the old schoolhouse right before going after the final boss so that you can pick your favorite party members to level up.
