The hardest thing with a small team in the premiership is you tend to have a league 1 / lower championship reputation still.

I took Dulwich up to the premiership, finished 13th and I'm still 42nd highest rep team in England.

I'm hoping a few more seasons will help it rocket up.

We're also getting a tiny fraction of the commercial money any other team brings in too.

My big, probably won't achieve goal is to qualify for some kind of Europe this year. We're bouncing between 4th and 8th in January.

Yep. We started off well enough, a win and 2 draws in our first three matches before our traditional Carabao Cup trouncing. Brought 10 players in and I'm pretty happy with the current squad.

I have a save for FM 11 where I started with Brocton FC in the 10th division. I come back to it every couple years, the last I left it a few years ago, we had just won the "Blue Square Bet Premier" league (which I guess is now called the National League) and got into what would now be EFL League 2. My goal is to win the Premier League, but I've been playing this save for more than 10 years now and I don't know if it'll ever happen. I'm 7 seasons in and only didn't win promotion once.

I would love to see a version of the England league system based on region, not team level (something like the Brazillian State Championships or the pre-Bundesliga German setup), but where the group stages feed into a national championship league for euro qualification etcetera

Ah, the perils of having a young talent on your roster:

At age 20, he's a pretty good defender, a definite starter at one of the hardest positions for a relative kid (age-wise) to play at (central defender). He wants more money. I want to give him more money, just to keep him happy, but there's one bit he will not budge on. He wants a minimum fee release set to 14.5 Million... which is less than his current value, and won't negotiate it.

"So you want more money, for me to get less money when you decide you want to leave?"

nope. I mean, pre-game (this is season 2 with Club Brugge, and he started with the team) the past manager might have, but I've made no promises (other than to offer him a contract which I then had to walk away from when he wouldn't negotiate the release clause)

Do players keep their chemistry/partnership/whatever it’s called if they switch clubs?

I’m about to switch clubs at the end of a season, and was wondering whether it’s worth trying to pick up my two decent out-of-contract CBs if they keep their existing chemistry.

If they're favored personnel for each other it helps them build chemistry faster, but I'm pretty sure it's tracked on a team level, so changing teams means starting back at 0 even if they both move to the same team.

So Zealand just posted a big ol video on player development. While some of the findings pretty much follow conventional wisdom there are a few oddities. Like tossing a player in at 70 minutes to "get them some game time" is actively harmful to development; if you're not going to play them at least half the game it's better to not even have them on the bench. And intra team friendlies are better for development, so if you don't need money from playing big teams in preseason it's best to just schedule a ton of matches against your u18/u20 teams.

The weirdest one was loans. You'll get the best development returns loaning to inactive leagues. Inactive>view only>playable.

To clarify, I mean by defaut in the affected leagues. I think that it was possible to change that via editing previously, of course.

It’s always been apparent to me that FM’s inscrutable game engine follows a very esoteric understanding of football. You might have a real solid player and you offer them out for 0% wage coverage and no one will offer a dime. It’s mickey mouse poo poo.

I wish there was some real competition in this segment of the market.

I still never loan out any prospects I think I might actually keep and use on my first team, only the guys I know I'm going to sell. Loans do a decent job of goosing sale value but in my experience have always been a negative for development, because you don't know what the gently caress the AI is going to do with the player except that it will definitely train him in a profoundly stupid way.

The only real surprise for me from that video is that playing a young player for less than a half harms their development. Everything else is stuff I've long believed to be true, especially about loans not working as advertised at all, Professionalism being the only attribute that really matters to development, high PA players developing faster than lower PA players, and the Natural Fitness attribute being a completely inert placebo. (I think it has a slight effect on how quickly players recover condition after a match, but the effect's only really noticeable when comparing someone with like NatFit 17 to NatFit 7.)

Also SI straight up lies about a lot of stuff. I don't think that's a surprise or a secret at this point.

I've not really found a save I've been able to stick to in FM23 but I found a fun looking challenge that as a Leicester fan I'm obligated to give a try - feel free to give it a read but basically I'm going to pick the 22nd team in the championship after the 22/23 season and try to win a premier league title in the 8 seasons after being relegated to league one. Like Leicester, I also have to keep my transfer spend low and try to include as many players as I can from my initial squad, and the squad that gets promoted from the championship, in my league winning squad.

Instead of simulating to 9/5/2023 I set the game to start in 15/5/2023 (one of Indonesia's start dates) and started as manager of Swansea. Likely one of the best starts one could ask for since the team has some players with great potential that could definitely be squad players for me in the premier league. I'm not losing a lot of my squad either, with most players contracted to 2024 or later. Ryan Manning is the only player I'm looking to keep who was unwilling to renew his contract, so I won't have to replace anyone apart from whoever leaves in the summer.

Fired this up yesterday and got myself hooked on it again for 5 hours #rookienumbers

This used to be a multiple-hundreds-of-hours game every year for me. Multiple thousands back in the CM 01/02 days. I'm one of those "this definitely hosed up my college years" guys. But it's been a minute since I played it that much. Feel like I've somewhat got the bug back.

Started with York City in the national league - an old favourite save of mine. I'm unbeaten after 14 and currently nestled in the play-offs, but definitely feel like I'm on the cusp of needing to make some changes before the game says "right, enough of that". As expected it's Notts County's league to lose (Wrexham are floundering in mid table) but I have just inflicted their first L.

One quirk to this save that I've implemented myself is to hide all the stats by setting their colour to 0 in the interface settings. I don't want to see a 1-20 stat for any player or staff member in this game. Instead, I want to trust stuff like training and scout reports, judge things on form and actually dive into performance metrics when signing players. I see SI have done a bunch of work on the data side of the game since I last played it, and while I'm sure that's flawed as gently caress, I kinda want to take it at face value and go with it.

Eric the Mauve
May 8, 2012

There are skins that make the attribute numbers invisible so you can only see colors. So instead of a 1-20 number you can only see attributes on a scale of terrible-bad-OK-good-great. Which IRL is really about as good as scouting can get, so it's an interesting way to play.

Bumhead
Sep 26, 2022

Yeah I still have the coloured sections on the stats pages for certain thresholds, as well as the up and down arrows on training reports as the stats move - but not specifically what the new stats are.

I feel like that gives you a realistic surface level sense of what they're good at without being lead by attribute points. Like, we all know who the quickest players are, but I'm not making in game decisions based on an arbitrary 1-3 point swing, and having to look a bit deeper into other metrics.

I'm the opposite - I don't mind player ratings because even very precise ones are frequently very loosely connected with performance. I know more about this game's sister franchise, Out of the Park Baseball, than FM these days, but even if the player turns off scouting (so that one always sees a player's 'true' ratings) players will constantly present surprises, usually unwelcome surprises. One game I'm following curiously has a stud young pitcher whose ratings are great, coming from a very good scout, but the guy has no pitch control. He's averaging about one walk per inning. To put things into context, one walk every three innings is considered poor - this is tragic... yet every scouting report comes back very positive on this very young guy. So, it becomes a question of 'Is he going to develop and we give him time'? or 'Should we trade him before he has no value'? Keep in mind that this is a very high draft pick, so there's an element of lost resources/sunk cost fallacy.

Mind you, baseball is a much more 'numbers' game than football (except for defence, which is very hard to quantify), so take that as you will.

Eric the Mauve
May 8, 2012

Yeah and in Football Manager it has always been and still is very common for a guy with CA 140 to vastly outperform a guy in the same role with mostly similar attribute distribution and CA 170, and I'll never comprehend why. I do know that if a guy doesn't come good within a half a season in my system he's never going to and should just be sold next summer.

I get some bad luck in front of goal, missing four out of five penalties, and end up sacked in 14th place with 4 wins and 9 draws in 17 games.
