I'm really not sure what you're going for with the noses tbh it's reminding me a lot of the dreaded tumblr nose syndrome and is just really distracting. the pictures are good without it and I think you could lose it and make the pieces a lot stronger. or at least tone it down a bit.

I used to do that with my art a lot too until I experienced a bunch of people asking me if they were supposed to have big zits on their noses. I think it can be an ok technique in moderation but it's good to realize for most non artist people it carries connotations of acne, alcoholism, and clowns

it's cool but why are you putting color in your value study? even a little bit kind of defeats the point

Thanks for the comments. I'm still experimenting with color, so I'll probably tone it down eventually. But I tend to think of color as hot and cold, so I use the hot spots to bring things forward. In painting I use cadmium red as the hottest, most forward color as kind of a play on color, as it registers as black in grayscale. I understand it alienates some (I've gotten similar comments), but loving whatever.

Some men just want to watch the world burn.

In truth I had planned to make it a full painting using the value as an underpainting, but I got tired of working on it...

Thanks for the comments, guys.

Don't do this thing, please. It makes so many artists seem prickly and insecure and undermines your justifications. The underpainting thing makes sense and I often do something similar to that, I just wanted to see why you did it.

Do what thing? I'm not trying to blow off criticism, but if the justification for the critique is, "it's alienating," then I don't know what to say. I'm just experimenting with expressionism and color and that's where I'm at right now.

e: drat I'm posting a lot and not posting drawings. Here's a quick alla prima study I did under weird lighting that made my subject look like he was made of baloney.

I go fight with wax sculpting for a few days and then come back to all this great art! drat - you guys are prolific!!

Here is another random portrait from a friend who is enchanted with her new hat. I seem to still be obsessed with the feel of ballpoint. It feels so much closer to pencil than most ink mediums. I can sketch lightly with ballpoint but not with other pens it seems.

Here is that wax before I ruined the features trying to carve with dentist tools.

Yeah, ballpoint's great. I use it instead of #2 pencil for sketching nowadays. I love the smooth feel of it.

Speaking of, there used to be a goon who posted regularly in the drawings threads, I'd say about 5-8 years ago, who drew these amazing things with four-colour ballpoint pens. Anyone remember him?

You got a great weird talent for messing with the facial features just enough to make them really give off an uncomfortable vibe. Like straight up "from the scrapbook of a serial killer" feeling.
Didn't you have an avatar at some point btw?
