Nick Soapdish posted:Going back to school this fall for my PhD in Clinical Social Work and using up the last couple semesters of post-9/11 benefits. From what I recall, as long as you have a single course that is on-group/in-person, that ticks over everything to real BAH. How does it work if I only have an on-site weekend once a semester? I am guessing that I am SOL and will only get the national rate since it isn't a separate course just the one weekend I think it depends how your school classifies the weekend. If the once per semester weekend is part of a course and the school certifies it as at least partially in person you should get full BAH. This one may require talking first to school then GI Bill help line.

I’m almost at 20. Talked to a dude today with well documented mental issues and he told me that everyone he’s talked to this year has received 100% disability. I also talked to another person a few weeks ago, unrelated, who said the same thing. What have you all heard?

I think you should find someone that isn’t the VA to assist you in filing your claim. I went through Disabled American Veterans. You will send some Korean/Vietnam vet your medical records and in a few days you will get a list of things you should write down on your claim.

I somehow managed to get my GI Bill retroactively reinstated, meaning I am getting 72 total months of GI Bill benefits. Here is how I did it. I used my GI Bill for undergrad. I took some unnecessary classes so by the time I graduated, I only had enough GI Bill left to pay for one more semester of anything. I reached out to VR&E. I was able to get half of my 12-month MBA program paid for by VR&E. My VR&E counselor said that there wasn't enough justification to pay for the whole thing (just to get me 150 credit hours to be eligible for my CPA license since that was my listed goal). My VR&E counselor retroactively reinstated my GI Bill so that I could finish grad school. There's a part of me that thinks I'm going to get screwed to the tune of $30k worth of grad school tuition one day down the road. But hey, maybe I'm just that loving lucky. Anyway I thought I'd share. Maybe I've stumbled onto a loophole that others can use.

Have you gone through the transition assistance program or anything yet? Start your medical paperwork and call your local DAV rep to ask about timelines. They do this every day and will be able to give you a straight answer.

If I get it, I’ll stay in two more years (that’s what the coast guard requires you obligate upon new rank). Otherwise, I find out in January (maybe earlier) and retire 6 months later. I did taps last January.

Six months is time. Just contact a rep and tell them your plans and they will walk you through what you need. The main thing you are up against is having a decision in place before your terminal leave is up. If that doesn’t happen, everything will be back dated. It’s just less stressful to make the transition when you know what your income is going to be.

I’ve been compiling all the stuff I can potentially claim, but when my buddy said everyone who he knows recently has gotten 100%, it’s making the transition and desire to stay in for O5 even less. My pension o4 with 20 years is $55k. If I get O5 and stay for 22, it jumps to $75k. However, if I can lock in 100% disability, then $110k a year to wake up means gently caress O5 and all the bullshit that comes with it. (Yes, I know the potential if O5 sticks makes it $150k, which is great, but I don’t necessarily need that part since I plan on working regardless after the coast guard).

Yeah the offices are staffed by volunteers who are usually old as dirt and overworked as hell. I got zero pleasantries from the guy I worked with but once I sent my medical records to them, I got back an itemized list of things I should claim. I did like they told me to and got my initial rating back before my terminal leave was up. A couple of weeks later I got a letter with a supplemental claim form enclosed that instructed me to claim a couple of other things. I filled it out and saw someone local for the exam. Afterwards the VA upped my rating to 100% P&T. I appreciated the work they did so much that I paid the 350 bucks to be a lifetime DAV member. Maybe your experience will be different? I don’t know.

I feel like I was the guinea pig on this: Columbus Ohio was the pilot location for the new electronic medical record. It’s been implemented there for several years now. I never had a problem when they imported the records from the old system to the new. In June I moved to LA and they can’t see anything. There’s nothing since the day before everything was copied and imported to the new system. There’s no way to export from old system to new. They are waiting for physical copies I guess? Kind of sucks. Just be ready if you plan on moving VAs, they are not backward compatible I guess

Any Chicago vets who need some dental care or if you know someone that could use some dental care: November 10th through 14th there is a clinic for free dental clinic but it is by appointment only. My wife was formerly a VSR at the Jesse Brown VA, and this information comes from one of her former colleagues.

Two questions: 1. Just to double check with the Post-9/11 GI Bill, as long as you have one day of benefits left for the semester, it will pay out for the whole semester, correct? 2. Has anyone had the automatic Rudisill decision review happen for getting their 12 month MGIB benefits back and does MGIB go day by day for benefits like Post-9/11 GI Bill? I just started a three year, including summer classes, Clinical Social Work PhD program and am trying to stretch my benefits as far as possible. With the time I have remaining on my benefits (~3 months, 16 days), I was planning to pay spring semester by loan and then use benefits for summer and fall since I will have ~1 month left when I start the fall semester. Then if I have the MGIB that can cover a year or possibly four semester and only have to take out loans for ~3 semesters Good luck to everyone out there in classes right now!

I've got a question about Rudisill reviews. So here's my story: I was enlisted active duty from March 2003 - May 2007 I was commissioned active duty from May 2007 - January 2013 I used about 17 months of MGIB benefits from Aug 2005 - May 2007 I used about 7 months of Post 9/11 benefits from Sep 2017 - Aug 2018. I filed to switch from MGIB to Post 9/11 just prior to this. Before requesting a Rudisill determination, I had about 12 months of Post 9/11 benefits remaining. A Rudisill determination should result in me receiving more eligibility, right? Would it be Post 9/11 eligibility, MGIB, a mix? Thanks!

You get 48 months total. Post 9/11 gives you 36 months. If you used 17 MGIB and 7 Post 9/11, you’ve got 24 months left of total benefits and can choose which of the two you want to use for that time.

I don’t know if it will help anyone now, but I used ask.va.gov to followup on mine frequently and it got sorted pretty quick.

Good stuff, thanks. I'm aiming to start using the benefits again in August 2026, and I suppose it won't really matter until I exhaust the 12 months I already know I do have, so I don't need a reply urgently at this point... that said, I'd rather know sooner rather than later exactly how much I have left.
