Technically I suppose it was Voltron for me, but at the time I thought it was just another cartoon. What actually piqued my interest in anime were Iria and Armitage on the Sci Fi channel (REMEMBER THAT NETWORK?), which looking back I find rather remarkable; Iria is barely coherent as it is, let alone hacked apart for 1990's America basic cable, and Armitage featured Kiefer Sutherland absolutely bored to death. They weren't great, especially presented that way, but my teenaged self was enchanted all the same. Edit: And then I went out and rented all sorts of things that Blockbuster ought not rent to 15-year olds. Akira. Ninja Scroll. Genocyber. Angel of Darkness (didn't know it was porn, it was just sitting there next to everything in the dead center of the store). Che Delilas fucked around with this message at 09:02 on Dec 14, 2015 |

I don't know exactly whether Pokemon edged it out, but I do know that I was the only kid I knew who watched G Gundam over Dragonball Z in elementary school. I don't think I really grasped part of,the plot, and I know for a fact I missed the beginning (first I remember is the Neo-Mexico fight, though I think I eventually saw older episodes on reruns), but I sure knew it was awesome.

The Sutherland version of Armitage III is also a hacked together movie from a four part OAV, which doesn't help.

My first exposure to anime was AKIRA, which I watched and thought was just bee's knees, and I rented it from a Blockbuster video. That, and Berserk, which I loving hated. I think I was like 8? I also remember watching Gundam Wing and DBZ on Toonami, and then that becoming staying up way past my established bedtime to watch Cowboy Bebop on [adult swim]. Bebop and FLCL became my favorite anime as a result, and I think I probably still prefer them to every other anime I've seen because they sorta introduced me to the medium writ large.

G-gundam when I was 8. I was already old enough to tell that it was racist as all hell, but yo that shining finger was so cool.

I just know whoever owned Robotech tried to pull a fast one on millions of seven year olds. I think they dubbed a completely different anime and tried to make it seem like it was a direct sequel to Macross? I just remember changing the channel when I realized what had happened. Yes, the Robotech/Macross split is well documented and heavily debated to this day.

Did cartoon network even show the third part of Robotech (the Invid Invasion)? That was my second favorite as a kid. Whenever I happened to see it was on, all I ever saw was episodes from the first and second chunks. I keep meaning to watch Genesis Climber Mospeda in its original form, but haven't yet. a kitten fucked around with this message at 22:19 on Dec 17, 2015 |

I will always remember one episode of sailor moon where it was very obvious that they were reusing previously animated stuff and changing the story. I knew they were messing with something but my young mind didn't know what.

G-Force before I knew what anime was, late-night DBZ in junior high. Various Gundams and DBZ through High School. Some Anime's should be left in your past though, Ronin Warriors was terrible on an attempted re-watch.

For me a major highlight of having a day off from school was getting to stay up the night before and catching a random episode of Cowboy Bebop. Best case scenario I got one of my favorite episodes, worst case scenario they removed Bebop from the line up and I didn't know beforehand.

DBZ when I was in like 5th grade or something, and then a few years later Kenshin, but that doesn't really count. Really got into it with Eureka Seven, which was my introduction to subs (since waiting a week per dubbed episode was just too much).

I was in middle school I think. I had problems with insomnia and was flipping channels and SciFi used to have late night anime; and I saw a edited-for-tv version of Akira and the sheer quality of it blew my mind.

Probably Fist of the North Star when they showed anime at 1am on Channel 4 in the 90's. Promptly forgot about the medium until a few years later my brother showed me an amv (yeah, I know) with my favourite band set to this little-known show called Neon Genesis Evanjellyon. This blew my teenage mind and I just had to find it. It's all kind of cringe-worthy to think of it now but it hasn't been all bad so that's okay.
