I'm always kind of reminded of this when it comes to possessing innately masculine traits you don't have to work for, like my voice is deep as poo poo so I was never concerned about people not seeing me as a burly man-man, I can wear hotpants and that poo poo still cuts through in people's general perception of me. For men who are decidedly average on the whole genetic scale, resorting to social means is their only recourse. Take that away and they feel like they have nothing left. It is truly a pathetic state of affairs.

Tbh as someone fairly engaged in many local LGBT communities and hobby groups there are just a ton of really dumbass people who think real oppression and bigotry crosses over into whatever stupid poo poo they're into. It's not specific to LGBT people clearly (everyone does it basically) but I can see why it would be relevant. Like my friend had a bad bout of depression and holed himself up in his apartment for a week, I tried to be supportive but also give real advice that would actually be helpful, "Go back to your therapist." or "Start taking your meds again." so obvs I was super miffed when it turned out a mutual friend was persistently trying to get him to buy dumbass crystals and all kinds of bullshit "natural" remedies when the dude barely had any money to speak of and was in dire straits and needed real help, not expensive snake oil and fatuous platitudes. Of course when I took issue with that, not on some idealogical or belief related level (I seriously just wanted my friend better and she was not helping), I got accused of being closeminded and bigoted against her religious beliefs for refusing to let her influence my friend in a way that was not going to be conducive towards his well being, and trying to convince them to help him in the most effective way was a nightmare because they simply could not toss aside the superstitious BS for one second to get level and help this dude out. It was mad drama. If he had just been kind of in the dumps I would have said "Whatever, it's his life and she has as much a right to be his friend and get him into whatever she wants to as long as it's safe." but the dude was in a pit where I was ready to have my finger on the dial button straight to 911 if i got any indication he might hurt himself. I felt like delaying the help he needed by distracting him with rocks and spells was an extremely dangerous game to play at that point. It was like dealing with Christian Scientists. tl;dr Innocuous and goofy beliefs can quickly become problematic if people create large communities surrounding those beliefs and use legitimate issues elsewhere in their life in order to justify poor decisions across the board. That could be pulling a Scientology and letting someone wither and die by denying them proper medical attention to push your own superstitious phooey, or robbing loving bones from a graveyard.

When I was in my teens I was playing The Movies and was making a mob film, I decided to give the lead actress progressively larger booby jobs, I then began editing the movie again only to realize that she had turned into a big titted golem that turned every scene into dumb poo poo.
