We have a few of the google home devices, and their voice recognition has gone way, way downhill in the past year or so. They're barely usable now. Used to be an occasional issue, now it makes an error maybe 30-50 percent of the time. My wife can't even tell it "volume down" or "volume up" without it just muting it. It's a garbage fire. I'm assuming because they've been integrating "ai" trash into it. If it wasn't for setting timers in the kitchen we wouldn't be using it at all. They basically live in our kitchen and bathrooms (music in the shower, plus if they decide to listen in, I get to inflict some psychic damage)

We have a bunch of Google Nest speakers around the house, and they exist strictly for timers, music, and yelling at them to turn some lights on/off. That's it. The Nest Hub mini v2 in my kitchen over the last 6 months has become increasingly more laggy and performance challenged. "Hey Google, put on a timer for 12 minutes for the pasta" will usually result in the screen lagging behind by 5 seconds as it struggles to display any of the input I just said. ![]() ![]()

Are you doing anything special to protect them? I've always been interested in doing that but assumed the units wouldn't cope with the steam.

No moisture related issues that I'm aware of. We got them free so we didn't really care what happens to them. One of the few things that consistently works is telling it to go to the next song while the shower is running without having to find/press a button.

I've used a nest speaker in the bathroom for years. Still using the same one after four years, and it was right on top of the wall that separates the shower from the rest of the bathroom for much of that time. So I wouldn't be too stressed about steam unless you're putting it in an actual sauna

I also like yelling at them to skip songs.

Favorite ad blocking without rooting? I was using Blokada which seems just fine but I've been unable to keep it running in the background - it seems to keep getting killed. Tried Adguard recently and it seems nice, includes a private browser, etc. I think Blokada uses a kill list while Adguard uses it's own DNS but the effect should be the same, no?

It works fine for me, but I only use it for browsing imgur.

Looks like blokada also uses dns blocking. And the latest version has some kinda paid subscription for "cloud-based ad blocking" which afaict is just setting the device to point to a blokada-controlled internet dns server that runs its own pi hole style block list. There are free alternative dns servers that do the same thing without a dumb app subscription like nextdns and adguard dns.

I used to use the Adguard DNS, but recently switched to the Mullvad DNS for ad blocking. Both are free, but the Adguard one often had problems with various public wifi spots that I haven't seen with Mullvad. No complaints so far. I'm just using the free tier stuff.

How are you all plugging in electrical devices in the bathroom? In the UK it is, as far as I'm aware, illegal to install standard voltage sockets in bathrooms. Do other countries not have this?

In the US we have GFCI outlets, which cut off if shorted. Apparently the UK term for them is RCD? Same thing, apparently. I was unfamiliar with the idea of a low-current shaver socket, that's interesting.

Yeah, national electric code specifies that ground fault circuit interrupter outlets are installed if the outlet is within 6ft of a water source or damp area. They monitor for imbalance of current between hot and neutral and trip in 1/40th of a second if it exceeds 5 milliamps or so.

I've got this FOSS app called SimpMusic (lol, stop simping) that is completely bitchin', it hooks up to your YouTube account and makes a Spotify clone out of your saved music playlists. You can download playlists for offline listening, it recommends albums and playlists, all that jazz. Only problem is it crashes a lot. Are there any other apps that do this sort of thing without crashing?

I'm switching back to Android after like 10 years. Is there a GitHub page or something like the OP that's a list of preferred apps for given use cases that's more up to date? I've been looking around but most everything assumes a degree of continuity within the ecosystem I just don't have.

Yeah I guess but I was more asking if there's a version of the OP somewhere that isn't five years old since my question would generally be for each category it covers. More just a starting point to gauge what's out there and still actively supported. Once my devices arrive I can chronicle what I end up going with in a post if it would be useful to anyone.

Just got into custom launchers, and my favorite feature (really the only one I care about) is being able to specify different feed providers. I'm running Neo Launcher, and I've got Neo Feed giving me RSS in that slot - but as an app it kinda sucks. Really all I want is a FreshRSS client so I can keep it synced with everything else, but for some reason it's impossible to find what apps work as feed providers. Is there one I'm missing??
|
![]() |
|
For all I can tell, "feed provider" may be a category consisting entirely out of Neo Feed alone (and in a way the google discover feature itself) and it is only a thing with a name in that it may work on a handful of launchers other than Neo Launcher. I used it for a while and then it shat itself so bad it would do nothing but crash. I'm using Feeder now as a regular rss app. I don't know anything about interacting with FreshRss.

There's *just* enough similar stuff that fits to make me go bug-eyed trying to figure this out - Lawnchair has Lawnfeed, which is how I learned about this. There's another app, SmartSpacer, which seems to be a widget-focused deal that isn't what I'm trying to do. But it really does feel like this is something that barely actually exists. The google discover is one of the last easily-accessible algorithmic dopamine drips I had easy access to - being able to parlay that bad habit into looking at the things I actually want to read would be a big win for me.

I just have the feed provider set to "none", which for me too is one of the reasons to use a custom launcher.

Few Q's: My work said that we will have to start using Microsoft Intune if we want to access our work accounts on our (personal) phones. I've never had to do something like this and want some information before going ahead with it. Their email says this does NOT have access to my personal information on the phone, but... 1) Does this really not have access to my personal info? 2) Most of the Microsoft apps I use on my phone are for work only, but I do have a personal OneDrive account that I use to access my personal files (everything in My Documents on Windows, basically) and handle my camera backups to my PC. Will this data be kept separate from what Intune can see? (update, I'm playing with having a Work Profile and OneDrive is not coming up in the Play Store?) 3) I'm cplaying with having a Work Profile on my phone right now. I'm guessing this is the first step I should take, keeping my personal data and work's access as far apart as I can. Anything else I should know? My personal belief is that your personal phone and your work phone should never mix. If they need to have access to you outside of working hours, they can provide you a phone. There are multiple security issues both on your side and on the company's side.

That said, the only thing my personal phone does that is consistently work-related is exchange texts with employees and coworkers. I do have my work email set up in Outlook on my phone, but I honestly don't remember the last time I used it and it is not set to check email or notify me (I did that in the past and it was a terrible idea - I get way too much email at work).

Echophonic posted:I'm certainly not installing something my company can (and will, if you quit or get fired) use to wipe my phone. That's kinda what I'm asking. This specifically says it only has access to my work accounts. I went without email access on my phone pre-smart phone days specifically because they said they needed access to wipe my phone at the time. I rarely use Outlook on my phone, but there are times when Teams is useful (we were using it to keep in touch at a convention) and having access to OneDrive has made my normal process of getting photos to my work PC so much easier (I would email myself the photos, then copy them from the email to the PC, making three extra copies of every photo and limiting how many photos I could deal with at any time to the email size limit (approx six pictures)).
