Echophonic posted:I'm certainly not installing something my company can (and will, if you quit or get fired) use to wipe my phone. Agreed. Installing Microsoft Authenticator was about the limit of my tolerance for poo poo like that. It also reminds me I need to bug IT to add Gboard to our management software thing because the default Samsung keyboard on my work phone is the worst I've used in years. Worse than the iPhone SE that was my previous work phone. Just absolute rear end.

I have a work-provided phone, but since I an allowed to use it for personal stuff I still set it up with a work profile for Intune. (I use the personal profile on it as a redundancy for stuff like banking and gov't apps.) You're right that the company cannot access any data outside of the work profile. However, one thing it can do is define security policies that apply globally. The two I have noticed are that it disabled face unlock, and I cannot install apps from non-Google Play sources. I do not know what other policies can be enabled.

For me, inTune allows the firm to delete the work profile remotely. They cannot touch anything on my personal side of the phone. This is something you need to talk with your inTune manager with for details of what they do/don't enable. The policy will mention some of the settings when you install it, but getting the IT policy would spell things out more completely would be a better option. My company doesn't really care what we do with our phones as long as our client data is safe. so unlocking the outlook app every time I use it etc.

A question that is not really about Android apps, but that's where the problem is shows up and I have to start somewhere: I've tried using LocalSend to share files between my Android phone and tablet, but the devices simply didn't see each other. They didn't see anything else on the network, although they connected without issue to the router. This feels a lot like some other network related issues I've been having - my wireless Sonos speaker dropped off the network and I can't get it to reconnect, a borrowed wireless printer couldn't connect to the network. Feels like there's a setting I should be looking for but I don't know what it is. Suggestions?

Check your router/ wifi access point for a setting called AP isolation. If that is turned on, wifi devices can't talk to each other (which is a good idea in public networks, but probably not what you want at home)

I don't believe devices need to be on the same network for it to work.

I gave up on Windows File Sharing like 2 decades ago. That poo poo never works so glad to have something like Local Send. I had no problem getting file sharing in Windows to work on XP, 2000, and Vista, but after that it's all been downhill. (and so have I) samba more like samBAD

I'm trying to figure out what's going on. A few apps will tell me there is an update, but when I go to the play store it says there are no updates. However, if I look on the play store website, there is a new version. I tried clearing the cache for the play store but nothing.

Rollout of app updates can be staged. https://support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/answer/6346149 This is something that is configurable by the developer. So, if they have an in-app check for an updated version and prompt you to update while at the same time used staged updates for their rollout, then that's kinda on the developer. Google fucks this up too for their own apps. I don't know how many times I've had Google Photos give me a toast for an updated version of the app while not having that update in the play store.

Trying to help my dad stream baseball on his TV; between the service (FanDuel Sports Network) and the devices laying around the only readily available option is casting from the phone app to his TV's built-in Chromecast thing, and it does work more or less fine. The one wrinkle is that when he opens the FDSN app on his phone (a Moto g Power I think it's called, a few years old, from Fi for like $50, don't have it in front of my but could be an Android version or two behind?), the cast button is greyed out; it seemingly doesn't detect any of the several TVs on his network. Doesn't seem to be the router or a TV issue -- I pull up the FDSN app on my phone (Pixel 8a) connected to his wifi, all expected devices are available. Troubleshooting it, I opened up the Google Home app on his phone, which found all his devices. Flip back over the the streaming app and the cast button comes alive, shows all his TVs, and it works correctly. So he just has to go over to Home for a second to discover the targets; is it obvious to anyone what the issue is and whether there's a setting that would eliminate that extra step? Like I said it doesn't appear to be the router but seeing Tamba posted:a setting called AP isolation

I can't find the setting but is there a way to not have any messages lose audio focus. I would prefer to have no sound notifications. I have play message chime turned off.

Okay so the windows remote desktop app just got 'upgraded' to the windows ...app. In doing so they've removed the home screen widget that RDP app had, where you could one-tap start a specific RDP connection. Has anyone here found any way of setting this up again? I'm on an s24+ if that is relevant. There's nothing in the widget menu and I don't see anything in the app. Thanks.

Is there an app (or even a workflow involving a couple of apps) for TTS on academic papers (mostly pdf)? I want to listen to papers while I do other stuff.

I forgot to say, I'm looking for something that won't read the headers and footers. Or is this more an issue with the actual pdf not being tagged properly? PS I loving hate pdfs. Just publish papers in html for crying out loud

Minotaurus Rex posted:Yup, that looks incredible - thanks! One handy tip for Paprika (probably other recipe apps but that's what we use) is that you can share a recipe page from Firefox/chrome to paprika to download it, rather than having to copy/paste it into the built in browser.

Tandoor and Mealie are both really easy to self host with docker which plays nicely with Linux. There are apps for both available on f-droid and probably the play store itself at the very least.

I'd like to use an old Android phone as a dedicated weather display. What app would y'all suggest for this? I want to display a weekly or even just a 5 day forecast that's readable at a glance with no ads or other annoying poo poo. Both weather apps in the OP are gone. Or are there any good websites for this that I can just leave it open in the phone's web browser that will show the most updated forecast?

I like the Openweather app, it's delightfully basic but no ads or nothing

Maybe Breezy Weather? It has a number of widgets, including a 5 day, Daily plus Weekly, daily trend, weekly trend, and more.

Honestly, maybe try Google Weather? I've been using it on an old phone I really only use as an alarm clock and it's fine. Not great, but adequate. On more active devices I like Weather Underground (aka Wunderground) but I'm not sure I'd recommend it for your purposes.

Any recommendations for a meal planning app? Something that would give caloric estimates for each meal would be great.
|
![]() |

Perhaps one of the calorie counting apps? You can save recipes in them too. My sister likes LoseIt and I use Cronometer (though it's probably overkill). Though if you're focused on "what can I make with what's in the fridge" they won't be very good for it. But for double checking the macros or calories in a recipe LoseIt would be great.

Sure, a calorie counting app would be fine (ideally something where i just type in the dish/ingredients/item and weight/volume and it gives me the calories).

It's been a few years since she used it but my wife used My Fitness Pal for that exactly. You could save recipes and scan barcodes for nutrition info, and then put it that you ate like 6oz of ground turkey and 8oz of Trader Joe's fries and it would record all the nutrition for you.

I was wondering what the mixed-OS households use when an iPad using young daughter wants to text/chat with an Android using father? My daughter can mostly use iMessage but I'm not in that walled garden. Usually I recommend Signal but she doesn't have a phone number. I'd also like parental controls or something to that effect to avoid people creeping her. I asked this question in the self-hosting thread too as I am considering a private Matrix server. SimpleX has also come up, which looks neat but I wanted to run it by others before committing. I suppose I could also use Google Chat if anyone remembers that.

There's a kids version of Facebook messenger my nieces use, but I have zero knowledge of what the parental controls are. They do not have Facebook accounts. I do know I can't attach links or edit messages that are sent to them.

It's been a while since I used it, but it has to be linked to a parent's facebook account so the parent can approve any new friends. Kids can't search for people to talk to, the person has to give them their Messenger Kids passphrase which then sends the parent an alert to approve or deny. I believe you also get a weekly report of who they've been talking to and any images that have been sent.
