They are quite great. I like them more than Pandora's even, which is pretty bad since that's Pandora's whole point.

I still subscribe to Pandora, even though I had youtube music key (or whatever it was called) since it came out.
I prefer pandora's radio stations. I mostly use it to go to sleep, and the stuff on there tends to be more things I know and like. Kinda like random through my library. I will always have play music just for the ad removal and the youtube background. I'll use play to listen to artist albums, or if I some new song, I'll play the artists best of from play.

The only people that I know that are even aware of google play music are really big into either google or android.

Any idea if there is any way to get Photos to play nice with metered connections?

It seems like metered connection is basically the solution I want and marshmallow has already been told that it's metered but Photos does not seem to give two shits.

Am I missing something obvious or is it just not set up for that yet?

I want to get my girlfriend a subscription to YouTube Red for Christmas, but it doesn't look like there's any easy way to do it. I can't find any evidence of gift subscriptions being a thing, but I also can't find any information on payment structures. I know it's $9.99/mo, but is there any option to buy more than a month at a time?

As it is, it looks like I'm going to have to sneak onto her computer to purchase it and put in my own credit card, but I'd like to at least be able to buy like a year upfront so I won't have to worry about managing the subscription if there's another credit card breach or something and I end up getting a new card again. Is that possible?

I'm posting from a phone or I'd spend the time to paste a link but after a quick google search you can gift a Google Music All Access subscription which would be the same as a Red sub.

I might be wrong about this, but I have a google music subscription from the very beginning and that gave me access to YouTube Red.

Hopefully someone else can verify.

Edit: Could you buy a google music subscription for yourself and add her via the new "family plan?" Then when she figures out who you really are, you might be able to cancel her part of the account?

I saw lots of things saying that YouTube Red included a Play Music subscription, but I didn't realize a Play Music subscription included YouTube Red. I guess they're effectively the same thing? That's helpful, thanks!

Definitely look at this if you're both going to be subscribing as it's cheaper than two individual subs and you can add six people to it.

This is actually the route I ended up going once I realized that Play Music and YouTube Red were the same subscription. I just bought it for myself and added her. Bonus: it looks like the music portion of the subscription is comparable enough to Spotify that she's going to save $10/month as well.

I like it better than Spotify personally, as you can add your own stuff that isn't on the service. Playlists are limited to 1000 songs though for some reason.

Looks like if you use your carrier number with Hangouts SMS/MMS, you may lose the functionality in a later version of Hangouts on Android and probably iOS too.

If you use Hangouts with Google Voice or Project Fi, you'll be fine.

Yeah, it's horrible. Going to cause so many headaches explaining things to my parents. Thankfully I only get SMS/MMS from one person, who I rarely contact, so it won't change too much for me, but it's just a bad decision overall. If you didn't want them all in Hangouts, you could easily use something else. They should have made it work more like iMessage, further enhancing it, rather than backpedaling.

In the end it won't be a huge deal, but it's just sad.

You're thinking of the Android thread, this is the apps thread, where it's debatably more appropriate to talk about, and hadn't been mentioned.

Apparently Google is removing SMS/MMS messaging from Hangouts, so I'm looking for a new texting app. I've been using it pretty much exclusively for a number of years, even though only one person I text actually uses Hangouts anyway. I downloaded Textra and it's nice I guess but what's the benefit over the default Android Messenger? I'm on Project Fi and Google actually recommends using Messenger over Hangouts but I fear change.

Basically why does everyone love Textra so much over Messenger? I get you can totally change the colors but if that's it, I can do without because my sense of color balance is poo poo anyway and I should leave that up to professionals.

Edit for page refresh:

Can any of these other texting apps get Hangouts messages in them? My main driver for using Hangouts is that I can't have my phone with me at work, but can get to gmail on my work computer, so its nice to be able to pick my conversation up from either place.

Google Authenticator. It’s 2015, why aren’t you using two-factor authentication yet?

Pardon me for being hopeless, but 1) Why, and 2) What does Google Authenticator actually DO?

Also, I figured I would ask if there are any decent apps for 1) A flashlight (I poked around but it seemed like there tended to be issues of it eating your battery like crazy), and 2) Finding free wi-fi hotspots (I looked, again, online, but couldn't find an app for that purpose that got glowing reviews).

Because Anti-Virus isn't going to pick up anything the Play Store's own scanners don't. It's only potentially useful in exceedingly niche situations or if you're downloading stuff from outside of the Play Store. Which you shouldn't be doing except for like AdAway or SuperSU.

And Google Authenticator is a Two-Factor Authentication app. One factor is your password. The other is a "randomly" generated passkey that the app will show you. Most good services and games support using this to login, and you should be using it on your Google, Amazon and bank accounts at a bare minimum. Authenticator+ or Authy are preferable over the standard app because they allow you to transfer it between devices easily and restore it if something fucks up nice and easy, as well as one app for all your 2FA stuff.

No. The only app that can access Hangouts messages is Hangouts. Maybe, with the removal of SMS from Hangouts, they'll finally release the api needed to add Hangouts messages to third party apps (this will never happen).

Authenticator+ is so good with a Wear device. I thought I'd miss Authy's Chrome app but I just don't and it's so convenient on the watch.

How does the watch know that you need a code? Do you have to navigate through the app launcher list and then wait for the app to launch and then scroll through accounts and...this sounds horrible basically. Partly because I have a 360 and it's slow, mind.

Yes, but it's not bad on my 360. That may be because I almost never open any watch apps so Authenticator is always at the top of my app list, and even if I've opened another app...Authenticator starts with "A".

It's exactly this. I use it every day at work so it's at the top of my list and wouldn't be far down even if it weren't. It opens really fast on my second-gen 360 and it looks and works perfectly. It actually opens a lot faster on my 360 because the app on the phone has a splash screen and a PIN lockout whereas this just opens.
