App sales lists a bunch of Black Friday app sales. The only big time one I saw was Poweramp unlocker for $0.99. I bought it even though I already own Shuttle+ (sale a few weeks back) and actually typically use Rocket Player (for the integration with iSyncr), but $0.99 of Google survey rewards is a no-brainer.
http://www.app-sales.net/

It's not showing up on that site yet, but it looks like BeyondPod's unlocker is half price ($2.99) on the play store.

Edit: Android Police has a post of sales updating as well:

Looks like ES File Explorer has decided to go the way of "Here's some bloat, pay us to make it go away".

Eh, I'm vaguely annoyed by the fact that they've been adding poo poo that sucks for the last few months, but I've certainly gotten my $3 worth. I'm waiting to try Solid Explorer and see if I like that more, but I'm definitely considering ES Pro.

Can't rep this hard enough. If you've been using a stock launcher this will be a big upgrade. You can try the free version to see if you like it, but its basically the first app I install when I get a new device.

Quick Google Music question. I decided to take advantage of their 3 months for $1 promotion. As long as I'm a member I figured I'd run the Google music app to upload my (missing?) music for remote access. Does the music uploader only upload music that's "missing" from Google's cloud or does it upload everything? The app is currently showing that it's uploading a much larger portion of my collection than I think could feasibly not be in the Google Music collection.

For anyone who is looking to migrate away from ES Explorer, Solid Explorer is on sale for $0.99 right now. You install the trial and then buy the full version as an in app purchase.

Not really digging the interface. Any other suggestions in terms of a solid and simple local and network file explorer? ES explorer this time a year ago was perfect. If they offered a paid version without the bullshit I'd be all about it.

Isn't that what this is? I tried a few of the alternatives when ES went to poo poo, but I came back to the Pro version. Alternatively you could try to find a year old APK for the normal version and just uncheck auto-update in the play store.

The only non-root option is Helium and it's spotty at best. If you really want to back things up that doesn't use Google's system (and not nearly enough games do), you really have to root and use Titanium. It's a really lovely situation unfortunately.

I tried Helium for the first time this week when migrating to a phone that I didn't want to root. It's certainly not as good as Titanium, but it did a fairly good job of moving most apps over. There were a handful that it didn't even detect (Facebook being the most glaringly obvious), but it did better than I expected for a non-root solution. Backup remains Google's biggest missing feature.

e: wait, why is it also garbage on WiFi then? I disabled Binge On and it's still crap so I'm hoping that it just takes some time to switch over, though I'm still confused why WiFi would look bad. The app video player has a button to make HD but the mobile site does not so I don't really have much control over anything. I can't watch hockey highlights like this :(

I think that's just Facebook really sucking at video.

Speaking of Facebook sucking, I have notifications completely turned off in their app, but still get notifications. Happens to my wife as well. You'd think the world's largest social media network could make their app work..

All my issues with wrong emails were just annoying or funny until someone tried to sign up for an AshleyMadison account with mine. I didn't think anything of it until a few months later they got hacked and my email ended up in a database of known-users. I got to have a nice awkward conversation with my wife after that.

Is there a good image editing/annotating app out there? I'm mostly looking to do things like cropping, adding annotations (Arrows, etc.) in screenshots and photos. I've used Pixlr, but I'm not a huge fan and am guessing there's something better.

Need a quick recommendation for an easy to use music player that can play a mix of mp3 and flac files. My wife wants music on her phone for down time at work. I still have 100+ gigs on one of my drives in our HTPC and just need something with a user-friendly interface once I load her SD card.

There's a bunch of these. As far as I know, they all offer either lite versions or trial versions, so just download several and have her actually pay for the one she likes most (assuming she needs the extra features, etc). Personally I use Rocket Player, but mostly because I like the iSyncr/iTunes rating integration.

Thanks. She must have been using a poorly designed webpage was somehow making it never go away, because it was definitely not going away when she scrolled down.

My GMail box is out of control. I get a poo poo ton of emails in my inbox in addition to the other folders and lately I've been missing important stuff. My thought is to set up some rules on my Gmail account to forward certain emails to another email address with push capability so I can set that app to vibrate my phone and watch. I'm open to more elegant options though. Anyone used an app to solve a similar issue? Perhaps something like this?

Also looking for suggestions for an app for that use case: playing long audio files, preferably with the ability to resume playback. I use spotify for music, so it'd basically only be for old radio programs or whatever.

You're going to want an app designed for playing longform audio that will save your place in multiple files. You could use an app designed for audiobooks, but I think an app designed for Podcasts with the ability to add a local folder as a podcast (or "virtual podcast") will work better. It looks like Podcast addict has this? It's free with ads, so worth trying. Someone in here may have a better suggestion.

Man I thought the reaction to Pocket Casts' redesign was wildly overwrought but at least that was over something that was actually kind of bad. The hysterical insanity the subscription model has incited makes me genuinely feel bad for the developers.

I own PocketCasts for Android and don't really care that its free now. However, if I'd purchased a lifetime license that suddenly required me to start paying a subscription for the same functionality I'd feel a bit ripped off. It's a tricky thing to manage the transition from one-time-buy to subscription, but that is not the way to do it.

How would you feel if you bought a lifetime license for something that just disappeared? More ripped off or less ripped off?

My reaction would be similar. If I paid for a lifetime license for a product that disappeared, but was immediately replaced by a subscription version from the same developer. Even more so if that developer was actually backed by a major corporate entity.

That wasn't the question. What if it just disappeared without any replacement? It's an ongoing cost without ongoing revenue, so it should be obvious that isn't sustainable and at some point it will have to end. Which is preferable?

It's a false choice. This has been done many times before. You split the product in two, grandfathering all your previous customers into a product that fills their needs while creating a new product on the subscription model. If you somehow hosed up the business plan so much that the new subscribers can't manage to fund your costs for the grandfathered plans then that is probably an indicator of more systematic problems that would encourage me to move to a competing product.

LastInLine posted:

Also the "major corporate entity" you're referring to in this situation is literally a consortium of non-profits. I suppose they could inject pledge drives into the user's podcasts for a few weeks out of the year but I doubt that's going to win them many friends either.

While those entities are indeed (to my knowledge) all non-profits, they're non-profits with incredible inflows of cash. Enough so that they can start going around acquiring for-profit entities. They're not your local community health clinic.

I'm just talking about the weirdos on Reddit and Twitter screaming about betrayal as if they'd walked in on Pocket Casts with their spouse and not, you know, gotten a slightly less advantageous deal from a podcast app.

Agreed. gently caress that crowd as usual. I don't care that the app went from $4 to free at all. It would've been nice to get something as a previous buyer, but as long as they don't start injecting their own ads or some other crap I'm fine.

Am I crazy or did HD Widgets used to allow you to select what app would load when you clicked on a particular widget? For example, when I click on a clock widget it opens the phone's alarm/stopwatch/timer app, but I'd like to switch that to AMDroid if there's a way?

Also SolidExplorer and it will handle SMB shares just fine. Using a network share for Podcasts sounds like the weirdest possible way to listen to podcasts, unless I'm misunderstanding what you're doing.
