I'd have thought that changing the water visibility would be one of the first mods done but apparently not. Trying to see anything 5 inches past your face is almost impossible.

I'm interested in doing some modding for this game, but have no coding skills to speak of. Are there any computer languages or programs that I could study on my own, knowledge that would transfer over? I'm talking about in a broad abstract sense, like learning scripting, the basics of 3D modelling, things like that?

http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/1754/ Alternate Start mod is here, in its first early stages. As of right now you load two bat files, one which places you at the end of the vault 111 sequence so you can do your character creation, and then another of your choosing to place you in the alternate start. Future updates will probably go to lengths to make this automatic but that'd likely require the creation tools to do.

Note to other F4RTers. When you run the reset, the changes won't show up until you reload the game. Again, running "player.removeperk xxxxxxxx" won't visually show the changes until you reload the game. I just F4RTed my way to a more efficient build that removed some cheating I had done earlier because I didn't know how to remove SPECIALs.

Here's the thing about an alt start mod for FO4: nearly every line of dialogue audibly contradicts nearly every one of them. How would a modder even begin to fix this?

Fallout 4 has the (very slight) benefit of allowing you to say "I have my own reasons for being here" or "I'm just looking around" in a lot of cases. The main plot is still the search for your son, and if you do say you're just looking around the game will act as if you're lying even with an alternate start, but it could be worse.

[edit] ^^ Mod Sarcasm to be always an option. Because sarcasm is always an option. [edit2] Imagine if you could make raider settlements and get raiders to join, and have the base be assaulted by the Minutemen and Brotherhood of Steel etc! E: Well, and I guess People in the institute talk about him, but that is kind of tied to the main plot anyway. Including that, I can only think of like 4 or 5 clips that aren't main-plot in the game that specifically mention you having a son. surc fucked around with this message at 00:22 on Nov 22, 2015 |

Are there any computer languages or programs that I could study on my own, knowledge that would transfer over? I'm talking about in a broad abstract sense, like learning scripting, the basics of 3D modelling, things like that? In general, there's three broad categories for modding a Bethesda game: 1. Asset creation. This covers textures and modeling, and most of the work is done via outside tools. This stuff is so simple to implement that you don't even necessarily need the official tools to see your stuff in-game. 2. Level design. If you want to build a swanky new house for your Lone Survivor, you'll need to learn to use the Creation Kit (or whatever they're calling it this time around). You'll have to wait for the official tools to be released, but they're also pretty simple to use, it's mostly drag and drop with keyboard shortcuts to speed things up. 3. Scripting. This is where you'll want to have a bit of coding knowledge and programming mindset, which is the hardest to learn. It's also usually unnecessary until you want to start building quests and creating dynamic events, so it'll probably be the last thing you do of the three categories when making a mod from scratch. Or you're doing UI modding, which starts touching a lot on asset creation. I think most people focus on one or two of those three categories, and people who can hit all three categories are pretty rare. If you want to get ahead as much as possible in preparation for modding Fallout 4, I would recommend studying modding tutorials and guides for Skyrim, as the engine is very similar and all the skills you learn largely transferable (to the point where current modders are hacking together plugins based on the understanding of how the file format behaves).

This guy has it right, generally bethesda makes their geck/creation kits very similar, so skills will be largely transferable. I would advise you to grab skyrims creation kit and mess around with it, I would be incredibly surprised if its not very similar.

Just take a look at half the poo poo on the Nexus and know that that even if you're a complete rookie when it comes to modding, you can probably churn out something cooler and more interesting than Xxx CloUd_StRife_Buster Sword Replacement MoD xxX if you put enough care into it. Bethsoft games are legendary for their modding for a very good reason, compared to most games it's incredibly simple to make things work in their engine.

The chameleon effect must not have been QA'd or something because this is bonkers. Immediately after finding a chest piece that gives the effect I was attacked by a Mr. Gutsy and could not see the reflex sight on my combat rifle. I found a mod that removes the screen color change when you begin sneaking, but nothing yet on removing the dumb shader effect. Edit: Also, is there any way to make the Pip Boy zoom in even further than it does when you right click? Since I set my FOV to 90, the zoomed in view is how close it has to be to be tolerable. Let me know when they finally mod keybinding for the NumPad and allow all junk items to be shared at every settlement. I love building settlements, i hate fast-traveling junk between settlements. And for what it's worth, either trade routes are bugged or I'm an idiot. Or both.

Local Leader rank 1 is pretty much mandatory if you want to do anything with your settlements at all. If you don't have 6 Charisma, just console command yourself a rank of that. It should be baseline functionality anyway.

I decided to just wear the Black Vest with Slacks outfit with ballistic weave. It looks decent enough, and when I need more armor than that (since I can't layer stuff on it without a mod + clipping) I just get in power armor. I really wonder if it was just an oversight on their part that lead to so many items not having the lining slot. If it was as simple as items that already had DR not getting lining, I'd at least understand, but it's not that at all. Even different color suits aren't consistent.

P sure I'm not the first person to piss about this. But, what's the deal with 90% of NPC hostility? Seems like it would be a big mod to overhaul this mechanic, but I'm keeping hope alive that I can eventually join Gunners, Scavs, Radiers, and Children of the Atom for some quests. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. I'm probably doing it wrong.
