They sound the same in my mind. This video is a decent explanation of the double consonant thing. Sense- vs. sensei is a little hard for me to describe. The second one is normal pronunciation. The first exaggerates the final sound, I guess? At least that's what pops into my head. Maybe like the line 28 seconds into this video?
