Your rear-end wont survive my hammering.

Fun Shoe
You guys might remember my last bus from a few years ago.

Mistakes were made, lessons learned, and enough PO fuckery to make the 57 cars I've owned look like nothing.

I wanted another bus. Too many beers followed by some craigslist searching found this guy.

Instantly the wife said gently caress YES LETS GET IT.

We drove a few hours north to take a look at it. Oh god the size of the project.

Vintage as all hell.
This is a 1969 Gillig 743DT-16 bus custom built for paramount pictures to haul grip equipment. I used to work on buses, and never saw anything like this.

Power is a 12.2L Cummins NH 743 engine making 270hp. Top speed puts it about 70. (it'll do 72 overrunning the engine)
transmission is a non syncro'd 15 speed box. Both rear axles are powered.
Theres also a giant pintle hitch with gladhands. This puppy was built to haul poo poo slowly.
Theres 96 thousand miles on it...its not even broken in.

but its not without issue. The roof had a nasty leak, rotting out the ceiling, the floors, and taking most of the joists with it. the PO spent 3 years replacing everything.

The original joist is in the middle. the replacements are above and below. I doubt we'll break these, even when the inlaws are over.

First order of business. there is one joist left that needs to be built and installed. Nothing can be done until then, not even moving the bus.

Horizontal six diesel.
It has no glowplugs, and starts immediately at 42F.

The forward fusebox. I think you guys still remember the one from the PD4104.....

Forward undercarriage. New soft air lines, air springs (its air spring over a half leaf), shocks up front. new bags in the rear, chambers, lines, etc.

The PO is 73 and put a ton of work into it, but he realized that there isn't a whole lotta time left at the rate he's making the conversion, so he bought a finished bus.

Our plans? 3 step process so far.
1. get the fucker buildable
2. build a roughing conversion so that we can move into it mid/late january 16'
3. start the actual conversion

Future plans are to build a towable shop to tow behind it. this includes a lift.

the nylon speedometer drive parts were broken by the PO, and the cable is MIA. if he has these things laying about, that'd be great. its a 57T nylon drive gear, the driven gear doesn't look much better.

Sweet! I'll drop em a line sometime this week.

When we went to look at the bus the guy told us it had new air springs, but one had a hole in it from improper installation. fuckit, yeah whatever We'll take a peek anyway. so when we got there the front shocks were off and I wasn't about to drive it that way. He ordered the spring and that was that.

We go back the next weekend to finish up the welding and get all the bus systems checked out and ready for the drive back to SF.

Friday night he calls us and said that the bus has the wrong bags. the one thats delivered has no internal bump stop, nor does the ones on it, causing the axle to crush the bags when the system drops. poo poo.
He was kind enough to reorder the front right. we ordered the front left.

Weldage! Time to weld. Since there was a ton of stuff to do so I let the wife to most of the welding and some of the cutting.

This was a fun joist to weld. since he laid a bead on the curbside first, and laying it over the frame it was sitting a little high for the streetside. I stood on the beam and pushed down from the roof while he welded it in place.
Wife got the crossmember and supporting pieces cut and welded faster than it took me to stow the spare tire, gently caress that thing I'm going to design a new mount for it. a 400lb tire is unruly as hell on a janky little hand winch.

cut and formed sheet steel for the wheel wells

While David did this I flushed the fuel systems and filters, checked fluids, brakes and chambers, tire pressures, lights. all basic Pre-trip stuff.
Alright! Lets go throw diesel in it. The PO drove it most of the way there, then put me in the hotseat. yeah that sucked.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKc8EhofZ2g
I suck at transmission when tired. I've not driven a 15speed/NH combo, and this was a rude awaking. I'm usually the manual rear end in a top hat, David rather enjoyed watching my rear end getting kicked by this thing.

Right. Moving on. We'd passed the 3pm deadline to move the bus for that day so we drove back the next morning and got it moved.

I remembered how to transmission, but holy shitballs do bay area drivers get retarded around big things.
Oh yeah, the clutch brake works. thats niiiiiiice. First big box I ever got to drive with a working one.

Find a vanerhome or a old church bus type thing. throw all your bikes/gear in it and go on trips :D Minimalist will work just fine.

So the bus is now setup in a place where we can wrench on the thing.

First things first. Remove the back 1/2 of the flooring, POR loving everything, and slather heavy duty paint on the underside/edges of the decking.

Very back of the coach, near the back doors.

(haha here you can see David's LED strip towards the top, that failed badly, they're the apa102 and didn't like all the drat noise so it'd fuckup constantly)

Rearward section done :D

This is what it looks like from the underside, in the left rear bay that was gutted. also note the gusset on the frame that was added.
(we'll go back and POR the sides/underside of the frame later, the top part can't be reached with the deck fastened)

Some randomness:

The "temp" electrical panel that the PO installed to do welding inside. I'm not so sure about that earth path.

Under the dash. NFI what this does or where it goes.

just beside the drivers seat. here you see the base of the shifter, the misc airlines for brakes, parking brakes, trolley valve, trailer, suspension, etc. Capped hoses are for heat.
I intend to get D latches and put a access panel here for future use.
In the second photo you'll see a pivot arm right against the bulkhead, thats part of the clutch linkage.

I started painting the walls and the wife painted the floors. It looks less like a dungeon cave.

Hmm, I wanted to monkey with APA102, but thankfully in a less noisy electrical environment. How'd they deal with the vibrations?

Also use Chassis Saver instead of POR. Cheaper, just as good (better if you believe Dan.)

never even fired the bus with em, iirc it was looping em around and his controller that was being dickish. The battery also wasn't quite up to the task of powering an array of those fuckers.

Kind of a big update since I'm combining some of last weekends work and this weekends stuff.

cheap water heater! this fuckers big enough for radiant heating and to take a good soaking shower.

view from the rear end side

Mockup of the bathroom.
Shower to the left
lavatory to the right. toilet where the stand is.
washer/dryer go infront of the shower, facing the shower. that wall directly inboard should be removable to facilitate service of the appliances.

Mockup walls sat in place

I also added some 1.5W zitrade led lights to the ceiling, same ones I used on the shitpile build for interior lighting.(lol still had em leftover from parting that bitch out) these will be mounted permanently sooner or later, with some red ones as well. emergency lighting, and night-out lighting.

I left off with the rear half bolted down. Now its on to the mid section. however theres a few fires to putout. the curbside doors leak like a motherfucker.

Cue David going to town on those doors with marine grade silicone. those two aren't being used anyway.

Cool! Driveline has a retainer in case the driveshaft wants to make a break for it and explore the world.

POR'd and painted the mid panels. That was the end of friday nights shenanigans.

Came in this morning, setup our little tent heater (3800 BTU), within 2 hours we had to turn the fucker off as it was cooking inside.

David starts on the insulation, I go to electrical gently caress-you land. (expanding foam keeps the insulation panels from squeaking like a GM product)

Davids blueprints on the left, started mine on the right. I'm notating all the access points that the PO cut into the floor. (most of these are worthless and not-needed).

Right. Electrical.

Cool! a subpanel, whats inside? OH WHATS THIS poo poo?!

oh ARGH

bye whore!
(I also removed the conduit and stuffed it i nthe ceiling, it'll be used for something else later)

One of the foreward support panels pulled, relocated that conduit. Theres an old evaporator that sits above the schoolbus section where the front of the cargo box ends. that is getting cut out. a server cabinet is going in its place, so all the networking will be there.
The top edges of the box leave 3" at the ceiling side, 2" at the wall side, and around 3.25-3.5" in the middle. this will allow us to run multiple conduits through the ceiling for various uses.
this is really wordy because I'll forget this in 3 days

CATS rear end ITS all 6061. 420 fart aluminum err day
I went on to ring out some wires and figure out what switches do what on the dash. I've a few 12v powere wires that run to the old evap core stated before. Probably can do something with those in the future.

Davids now done with the insulation, and started screwing the deck down. (Side note, we ran the engine at 1100 RPM for 45 minutes, the exhaust was still touchable, it comes 4" from the insulation or so. I'm going to wrap it anyway)

I pulled the cover off to make a scan of it to reproduce it. Theres also some fuckery going as half the dash is powered with the key off. *rolls eyes*

also during running I found a coolant temp sending unit is leaking, and some kind of plug on the top of the radiator is also leaking. its also a giant bitch to remove this radiator. I'll come up with a fix soonish. this thing "overheats" at 190, so not like its pressurizing much.
No photos but the fuel tank sending unit is fixed, theres about 45 gallons of cloudy lovely diesel inside too. (tanks capacity is 125)
