:siren: 2015 Steamgoon Holiday Contest :siren:
sponsored by Depends, because nowadays all games are either piss-poor, or outright shitty.

This year we’re running 3 main contests simultaneously from now to Monday, Dec 21st.
Enter any of the main contests, comment on other people's entries, or send gifts or prizes to entries you enjoy. This is supposed to be a celebration, so let's have some fun!

:mario:
:siren:1. Game Creator Extraordinaire::siren:
We're bringing back the game making competition for the fourth year in a row. You've got two weeks to make a ‘holiday’ themed game, which can be a puzzle, an interactive story, a flash game (also here), or an adventure game. If you need help, you can probably find it in the Game Making Megathread.

Formats accepted: If it can be loosely considered a game and the judges can play it, we'll accept it, even a board game. But please build/draw/construct something for the game. Post more than just your idea.

Prizes:
First Place: $100 spending spree
Second Place: $60 spending spree
Third Place: $25 spending spree

:gaben:
:siren:2. Create a new Steam Achievement::siren:
I remember waaaaaay back when the Steam winter sale had a bunch of special holiday achievements. Nowadays they would probably have to add special emotes and trading cards for each game, too. Actually, that would be pretty cool, so let's do that. Pick a game on Steam and come up with a set of at least three holiday achievements, emotes, or trading cards for it. If you're feeling ambitious, you can do all three!

Formats accepted: Pictures and text

Prizes:
First Place: $60 spending spree
Second Place: $40 spending spree
Third Place: $20 spending spree

:lesnick:
:siren:3. Show us your Spirit::siren:
We want you to show your holiday spirit by challenging or embarrassing yourself in the name of the season. This one is limited only by your imagination and local law enforcement, but here are a few examples to get you started:
• Dress up as your favorite character, and deliver food to a shelter
• Cook a full holiday feast and blend it into a giant smoothie, then drink it on camera
• Write a season appropriate song about gaming, then perform it for all to hear

Formats accepted: all - just provide proof of what you did.

Prizes:
First Place: $60 spending spree
Second Place: $40 spending spree
Third Place: $20 spending spree

Please post your name and the banner of the contest you are entering above with your entry.

All three contests run simultaneously from now until ~6 PM (GMT-7) Monday, Dec 21st. They end early enough for you to maximize your spending spree over the xmas sale.
We usually judge on the following criteria: Quality, Effort, Creativity/Humor.
As always, there may also be a secret prize or two.

No, no, the anagram is so difficult that Kragger is imposing a SPECIAL GLOSSARY TAX!

e: of course, we could get into a fight about definitions, but then we'd be having a lexical glossary spat

Contradiction really impressed me with how elaborate and well thought out its achievement system is. It was hard work coming up with achievements as original as those already in the game, but here's my try at it:

Holiday mode unlocked
Play the game during the holidays - good!

NO CHEATS USED
Complete an arbitrary portion of the game during the holidays with no cheats used - bloody good!

GAME COMPLETED DURING THE holidays
Just say Merry Christmas, you bloody heathen!

The only change I made was the L in 'also' of the last sentence was italicised in error, but that was fixed about 15 min after the original post (about 2 hours ago).
Only the underlined and italicised letters count.

I did not think it would be this difficult.
The next one I'm planning requires much more effort.

I was definitely off by one somewhere. Anagrams aren't really a very good puzzle on their own, I'm afraid. Someone might still find it.

Doesn't think, just types.
I think I'll be writing an interactive short story/game for this if there's time between university and christmas business.

I'm wondering though, is there a way to have global variables or something in Twine? Like, "you did X back at another point, so it opens a different possibility now"? Doing several different branches will be agonizing otherwise.

edit: Yes. http://twinery.org/wiki/set, http://twine2.neocities.org/ for twine2

Like every year I'm adding :siren: my little birthday contest :siren:

  • Task: just mash together gaming and christmas in any way or form. It can be food, picture, song, game, costume, writing whatever you want. Just put 2 things together in like 5 minutes, whatever.
  • Prize: the entry I'll like the most or laugh the most at will get a game(s) on Steam worth up to $20.
  • Deadline: You have time until monday night.

Good luck and have fun!

Well, we're halfway through the contest, and we've had I think 2 entries. Thank you for those!
We've been debating cancelling it altogether due to the lack of interest, but we're not sure that's the best option.
We will scale back the prizes though. For each competition, unless there are 5 or more entries, we'll only have one prize.

As for the crossword I was going to post this weekend, I'll save that for another day. Put too much effort in for potentially no interest.

I'm also not going to post reminders of this thread in the main Steam or Gifting/Contests threads, as apparently it pisses some people off.

We'll run this to the end, to be fair to anyone that was going to enter.

Thanks for the entries so far! Hopefully we'll have some more before next Sunday.

Sorry if I sound butthurt, but when putting up ~$300 in prizes with 2 entries halfway through, it's a little disheartening.

Nah it's a reasonable response. Usually you get a pretty good turn out too, I dunno what's up with this year.

You are the filth.

I saw this post and I was pretty sad to see the lack of entries but it did remind me of way the gently caress back in 2011 there was one of these threads and the one time I entered them, because I know I'm not creative enough to make a good entry.

I think in 2011 that was the time I first met the actual steamgoons community and became a part of them on IRC and steam and whatnot.

ANYWAY, because I was reminded I actually hunted around for my dumb entry which I remembered all this time even though I have no idea what the actual competition was, but I do remember it being ran by Palpek for something though.

So here is my picture:

This is me, badly trying to look like Johnny 5 Aces in the most :effort: way possible, like the dumb fat goon I am. it's not even an entry for this year because it doesn't fill any category, I just wanted to post it.

If it inspires laughing at me then that's fantastic, I just want to see more entries because Kragger99 and Palpek are awesome dudes and this topic should be flooded with dumb and fun entries, like my lovely picture was 5 years ago. Do it dudes.

For the record I thought this had started on Dec 10 when it was first posted in the game dev threads, and a ludum dare just started on ~dec 10 so that's probably the reason for the quiet front regarding the game competition
