Why is everyone posting ship names? I didn't read the first thread.

It's traditional in these games to choose a 'lucky ship' as your own. Makes it seem you like you have more of a personal stake in the goings on. Just nominate a ship nobody has named yet, and see how she fares over the next 4 years!

When can we expect the Junyo to be ready? The building was accelerated in the Dec 7 post, but the delivery date was the same as its commissioning IRL (3 May). I'm not familiar with the industry mechanics; I'm guessing that date isn't updated immediately?

I'm a little late to Grandads.txt, but I felt like contributing.

The only one of my grandfathers who fought in the war was a pilot in the forgotten theatre of Burma. He was part of 177 Squadron RAF, flying long range interdiction missions from Bangladesh to Burma, attacking Japanese railways and shipping. by all accounts, the effects of the sweeps were very effective, disrupting Japanese army supply lines, but they paid for it with fairly high attrition rates of 30-40%. If your aircraft was damaged, there was a good chance you wouldn't be able to clear the mountains on the way back into Bangladesh and would have to bail over enemy lines and meet with Japanese hospitality.

There's a good write-up about the squadron's activities here: http://scholars.wlu.ca/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1032&context=cmh

Found some old photos:

This picture is probably from 1944, after the squadron reequipped with rocket-armed Beaufighter Mk Xs

sometimes the Japanese shot back

Not from my grandfather's squadron, but an example of the long-range raids:

I do have a copy of the squadron's Christmas dinner menu though!

Did you pull a lot of troops from other theatres to free them up for the Philippines? Once we've wrapped the Philippines up, I'm guessing the pace will pick up as troops are freed for attacking other areas? We haven't seen any real attack on the Dutch East Indies or Burma yet.

Feel for me, for speed of updates I run it at the same resolution you see in the images - so I have a tiny box in the middle of my screen.

On the plus side, I don't have to resized every image I take.

Quick question for my sleep addled brain. I need to put the KB with naval engineers to get them to resupply torps right?

I didn't know off the top of my head, but the from the Manual, page 165:

7.2.1.10.1 CARRIER-BASED ORDNANCE
Carrier-based aircraft require ordnance in order to complete missions.
The ordnance carried is reflected in the Max Sorties value shown on the ship display. Each
strike or escort mission executed by the Air Groups on the ship will use up some sorties. Once
the sortie value is zero, the groups cannot execute offensive missions.
The Max Sorties can be replenished at an appropriate sized base.

7.2.1.10.2.1 SHIP BASED TORPEDO SUPPLY
TBs will expend torpedo ordnance in the same manner as Max Sorties is expended. TBs will
either expend torpedo or Max Sorties, not both.
Once all torpedoes have been expended, then bombs will be used.

7.2.1.10.2.2 LAND BASED TORPEDO SUPPLY
On land, torpedoes are supplied from Air HQs or appropriate Base Forces that carry a “Torpedo
Ordnance” device.

The Air HQ or BF expends supply at the base to “purchase” torpedoes that are stored in the
Air HQ or BF. Each Air HQ or BF can have a torpedo level set. This represents the number of
torpedoes that the unit will automatically try to maintain.

Command HQs can directly supply torpedoes to groups by expending supply. It does not need
to keep a torpedo reserve.

When a group is ordered to attack ships, the group checks for any BF or HQ in the same base. If
one is found, a number of torpedoes equal to the planes flying are expended from the BF or HQ.

And resupply rules (page 212)

9.3.3.2 CARGO AND FUEL HANDLING
This is the total amount of “over the pier” and “thru the pipe” load/unload that can be done in
a port of that size. The cargo handling and fueling limits are Daily values, the others limits are
constant. Rearming and Loading Troops consumes cargo capacity, as does loading supplies,
resources, fuel in barrels, and aircraft. Refueling and loading ships with oil or fuel (other than in
barrels) consumes fueling capacity. Once the daily cargo/fuel limits are reached, no more cargo
handling/fueling can take place that day. Cargo limit can be increased by Naval Support (extra
stevedoring) but not fuel limits. Undocked TFs can load/unload cargo at any port, but can only
refuel if the port is size 5 or larger (as smaller ports do not have equipment to support it).
Rearm Level uses a rearm cost for each device aboard a ship. For Mines, ASW devices and
Torpedoes, the load cost is used (this is usually the weight of the weapon).
For guns (Naval,
DP, flak), double the effect (as load cost does not reflect the size of ammo) Aircraft Sorties has
a flat cost of 500.

Note the large jump at a level 7 port, which basically insures that torpedoes, most mines, and
Battleship size guns cannot be rearmed at smaller ports.

Rearm Limit is applied to each device on a ship being rearmed. Depending on the load cost
of each weapon and the adjusted capability of the port, some or all of the weapons may not
be rearmed. A medium sized port might be able to rearm cruiser guns and smaller, but not BB
guns, torpedoes, or mines.

Naval Support Adjustments for:
»» Cargo Handling = plus 10 for each undamaged Naval Support Device Present.
»» Rearm Level = plus 5 for each undamaged Naval Support Device Present.
»» Repairs = 100 undamaged Naval Support Devices(NS) approximately
equals an AR, 50 NS approximately equals a tender.

so perhaps you'd just got them in too small a port and they're overwhelming the resupply/rearm capacity?

lenoon posted:

If you want to read some fiction about it, the Flashman novels have a fair bit of historical context and intelligent discussions of the political situation at the height of the empire - which is surprising for a series where the author is an arch conservative and the protagonist is an utter wanker. Militarily there's Victoria's Wars, and a fuckton of freely available kindle editions of various adventurers, diplomats and generals reminiscing about their own experiences at the time. If you're willing to put that level of reading in, you'll get the mindset and mechanics of the empire better than any secondary sources.

As for why it kept expanding, there's the usual empire building elements of greed, white man's burden, border problems (ok you're taxing these guys but their cousins are over the border raising them, go "pacify" them and now there's another set over another border... Etc etc etc), imperial brinksmanship and European politics. And then on top of that there's a huge ball of accidental actions, weird adventurers (as Flashman says "there were a lot of strange people around in the earlies"), diplomatic agreements gradually turning into annexation and the occasional "these people are great warriors, let's try to incorporate them into the empire and the army!

Nearly every situation was different, though trading concerns account for a surprisingly large amount of it. India was brought under the government after the company took over these huge areas gradually and then completely hosed up handling it, the Punjab was half pacification effort and half "oh god well let's just take it over its easier in the long run", Hong Kong a concession in a trade agreement (the opium wars are bizarre) and British possessions in Myanmar and a lot of Africa were spoils of war or individuals turning up and saying "oh I carved out this personal fiefdom, do you want it?". The Gilbert and Ellis Islands and other small possessions were just "oh man let's build a phosphate factory here!", while the oddly sometimes forgotten imperial colonies of Canada, New Zealand and Australia all have their own weird and unique interactions with the empire as a whole. The empire is endlessly fascinating, but I find government policy the most boring part. There's no rule - it's all bizarre exceptions.

Adding to this, there was a fascinating cold/proxy war that went on in Asia as Britain consolodated power in India. Highly recommend the book The Great Game by Peter Hopkirk: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/138299.The_Great_Game
