Is Chocolina's backstory revealed in XIII-2 or LR. I forget, and I hope it's LR because that's a really ridiculous reveal and I wanna see it again.

it's weird how much of an 'unpolished/western rpg' feel bits of this game have. at the start of the game, I began talking to the the inquisitor, and a random crowd npc began walking into him mid-conversation and pushing him out of frame. this happened again a few minutes later. also, seeing a door open and a crowd npc phase through the solid wall directly behind it. about ten hours in now and enjoying it a lot. going to fight the boss of the desert zone next time I play.

So far it's real good but I hate that Vanille is the cliche comic relief Japanese character who is voiced by someone doing what an Australian sounds like in anime land. But that's OK because everyone else is really cool.

My favorite touch is that whenever you complete a side quest and save someone's soul, every NPC in the area instantly zeroes in on your position and starts a cheering animation

i like that, in 13, much of their characterization is different archetypes of dealing with tragedy or grief because their world and lives are in so much poo poo

I like when Lightning punches Snow. Also the summons are the most insane thing ever lol. Lightning can ride a horse that flies and drops rose petals.

elf help book posted:no, youre supposed to pick it up as you go along, i think theres also an in game dictionary or something like that This is why a lot of other JRPGs have main protagonists with amnesia, to justify having other characters explain their fantasy world to the audience. Past FF games were great about introducing parts of the world through a ragtag party that could put a personal face on their respective cultures and job classes, long before setting foot in their weird villages. In half the games you only have a summoner in your party to explain the role that summoning plays in the larger world, otherwise why would you give a gently caress about what happens to summoners? It's amazing how FFXIII kind of blindly lifted the big story beats of past FF games without understanding how or why they worked. FF7 started with a train hijacking so why not this one? FFXIII's characters all have the same background and live in the same world, so no one really explains anything to each other (with few exceptions) and you have to use the in-game codex as a crutch to understand basic terms. It also expects you to care about saving a world that you haven't seen, can't interact with, and only wants to kill you for the whole game. Which is a shame since the fabulis crystalis nova world or whatever is pretty interesting. When you read about it. In the codex.

It's really annoying in FFX when every scene has someone turning to Camera 2 and calmly explaining everything that we just saw happen to Tidus again, and then he has a brief internal monologue processing the events and restating them.

I like F13 more for not explaining everything. Having the main character being an amnesiac/detective/foreigner of some kind is so insanely overused that it's really refreshing to not see that for once. They use the character's pain and grief as a tool to make you care about them, and get this: it works, for me.

elf help book posted:its in the 13-2 sazh dlc I didn't do the Sazh dlc and found out by collecting all the fragments. One of them being collecting a fragment from a baby chocobo chick in the casino of the regular game where it's then strongly hinted that it's Chocolina. Not sure if there's a more direct reference in the dlc or w/e but, that's how I found out

I think the DLC makes it a big reveal with a cutscene of flashbacks and like, connecting the dots that leads to footage cutting between the chocobo chick in his afro to a shot of Chocolina and back again, etc. At least that's what I remember.

To avoid sounding like too much of a negative nancy, FFXIII's art and sound direction were fantastic, the battle system was great, and it has the best UI I've ever interacted with in a video game.
