I'd describe Japanese mediums up to tier 8 as good guns with large, poorly armored tanks built around them. They don't need any special skills, just some restraint because they are so fragile. I'd recommend going down the light line then branching to the mediums to avoid the first 3. The lights are just plain better tier for tier.

As for the tier 5+ mediums, it is all about the guns. The Chi-Nu/Chi-Nu Kai have competitive DPM, slightly higher alpha, slightly lower ROF, and way better gun handling than the other tier 5 mediums. Chi-To plays like a bigger Chi-Nu at tier 6. The Chi-Ri is YOOGE and gets a three round rapid fire autoloader with great handling, 10 second reload, and heavy tank like burst damage potential. Try to play them all second line support/TD style, because you will be relatively slow in speed and traverse, increasingly huge, and have no armor.

STA-1 almost feels like you've switched to another nation. Its decently mobile and great at ridge work, but still has no armor and the gun handling doesn't feel as good as the other tanks in the line. It feels like a Pershing without the good gun mantlet.

That's as far as I've gotten, but from what I've seen the Type 61 and STB-1 continue trading a bit of the gun handling for a better overall tank.

TL;DR: Up to tier 8 pretend to be a TD, farm damage and feel ok about it. Treat tier 8+ like American mediums.

The AMX Chaffee is also a dual crew trainer for American and French crews, and I think there's also an American/German trainer as well. Speaking of, the AMX Chaffee is a goddamn amazing tank.

The MTLS, AMX Chaffee, T127 and T95E2 are not currently for sale, but they will pop back up in time. I recommend the AMX Chaffee the most of those four; if you're even a little interested in light tanks, that thing will be like a gift from God. And yes, they did fix the turret ring on the T95E2, that was a modeling glitch. It is still easy-ish to hit the turret ring but not nearly as bad as it was. The MTLS and T-127 are insane at seal clubbing, a lot of players just do not know how to fight back against either of those two. The most silver I earned in a match was over 250k in the T95E2, no operations active at all, hence why I recommend that one. Also, the German tier 7 E-25 is a great premium as well but it takes a good bit of skill to use, so maybe don't rush in and grab it early on.

If you think you'll be playing a lot of WoT, I recommend grabbing premium for at least a week. I go in and out with this game, playing it obsessively for a month or two and then dropping it completely, so I usually just buy a month of premium whenever the urge to play hits me. Whether it's worth it depends on what you want from the game and how you view FTP transactions; personally, I have sunk a ton of time into this game, so I see buying premium tanks and premium time as me paying Wargaming for making a game I really like.

The biggest thing premium helps with is silver. That bonus matters a TON. However, if you have a tier 8 premium, you can just drive that a few times a day and earn bank even without premium time.

I can't think of any american/German cross nation premiums. Now if we're talking seal clubbing premiums the Pz. IIJ is great of you don't wanna run a profit. The BT-SV is also amazing. The angling of the armor is just ridiculous. But I think for premium seal clubbers the SU-76I is where it's at. It's got a great gun and pretty good armor and gets preferential matchmaking. Unfortunately all the fun ones are pretty rare and it's probably gonna be a while before they are sold again. But just for an always available premium you can't go wrong with the Super Pershing. I drove the e-25 in testing, it seemed good but I just have not got around to purchasing it.

As far as premium time it just depends on how much you play. It does go on sale, especially around the holidays. But at regular price buying 30 days at a time is an okay deal.

The German/American cross trainer I was thinking of the PZV/M10, which apparently isn't actually a cross trainer. Thought it was, oh well.

The BT-SV is a lot of fun but I don't bounce shots anywhere near as often as I'd expect in it. Worth buying just for how ridiculous it looks though. I hate the PZ IIJ, it's impossible to turn a profit and even with gold shells that thing can't penetrate virtually any tier 3, and even most tier 2 tanks it'll have trouble with. Maybe if it had flanking potential, but nope. At least it was free, but then so was the PZ 38H and that thing is literally better against tier 2 and tier 3 tanks than the PZIIJ despite being a tier lower.

Just wanted to share that after doing some serious hardcore silver grinding this weekend I finally have a shiny new IS-7. By serious hardcore grinding I mean I spent maybe a total of 6 or 7 hours solely dedicated to grinding silver. I spent about 4 hours on Saturday playing tier 4-6 matches with some friends (and apparently a random goon? MrSugarDaddyBear69? Good games if you're here, dunno who you are really though :) ) and then going back and forth between the is-6 and su-122-44. I stopped when I got to 4.1M silver (up from 1.4 where I started the day). I was going to keep going on Sunday but a friend of mine had just started playing the game so I joined a couple people with him and was doing T1,2 and a couple T3 matches towards the end. Then back to the IS and SU to finally finish the grind. Finally had my first ~150k silver match in the IS. That felt good. And yes, I was definitely running premium time all weekend.

Now I just need to do another couple hours to get the silver for the equipment on it. Then I can go back to working on the British TD line (I just want the death star because it seems hilarious), the german heavy line (the E75 and E100 look stupidly fun with their armor and health) and the British heavy line (stuck on the Churchill VII, the level of fun went down drastically after the matilda). I also spent time this weekend getting up to the M5 Stuart and stockpiling XP on it to get ready for the new american medium line because the autoloaders on that line look pretty fun.

DEEP STATE PLOT

They are like the IS-7 line except better. The IS-2 is a slightly better IS, the 110 is better than the IS-3, the WZ-111 1-4 is better than the IS-8. The 113 is worse than the IS-7 but honestly gently caress tier 10 anyway.

If you liked going up the Russian IS line you'll like the Chinese heavy line even more.

Their light line basically gets a bunch of medium tank guns on much faster chassis', they are ridiculously deadly if you are a competent light tank driver.

e: also a lot of people don't respect the WZ-132, which leads to games like the one I had right after I posted.

Tier 10s don't fear the WZ-132 at all, but they really should. I spent that whole match just sneaking behind fools and shooting them in the rear end while they remained focused on the other tier 10s on my team. This was after three other tier 10 games that went: 3,000 damage the first game, 3,500 spotting damage the second and 5,100 spotting damage the third. WZ-132 is the bomb.

The IS-2 is pretty much an IS with a HEAT shell instead of APCR, so more pen, but a larger chance of it fizzing out against spaced armor. It has a slightly better front slope, but not enough to matter. The 110 is pretty much a heavy tank with a tier 9 medium gun, it doesn't hit as hard, but you get a better ROF. Its armor is a little better then the IS-3, at depending on which version of the IS-3, the current PC one is better. The WZ-111 1-4 is a tier 9 IS-7, same gun, similar agility, but less armor and HP. The tier 10 is probably still terrible.

The medium line is uninspired, the Type T-34 is the T-34 from the Russian line, The Type 58 is a T-34-85 that loses the top gun from the T-34-85, but gets a better ROF. Its pretty good. The T-34-1 is a tiny little medium that gets a 100mm gun and the nice turret armor from Russian tanks, but really struggles with bad gun depression. The T-34-2 is that tank but with the option of sticking a 122mm gun on it, but it has a glacial reload. The WZ-120 is a T-54 with a 122mm gun option. Actually works surprising well.

The light line is where its at though. The 59-16 its tiny and fast, and has the option of using a high pen low alpha 57mm gun, or going with a 76mm rapid fire autoloader. The one downside to the autoloader is its criminally bad penetration, a lot of heavy tanks are immune to it unless you are directly behind them and have a flat spot to hit.
The WZ-131 is pretty amazing though, if you stick with the top 85mm gun option on it, you can out DPM a ton of things, its got good camo, good accuracy and is fun to drive. The WZ-132 is a slightly better WZ-131, but now the 100mm gun is a option.

What are the view distances like on the light tanks? They sound like they'd be good at pestering the rear flank, but what about basic scouting? Also, how's their armor? I'm guessing since they're lights, there isn't much to speak of really.

Also, I have yet to ever fire a single premium round of any kind. I know it's pretty sad, but I've been saving silver for new tanks, and using gold for premium time / xp conversion.

DEEP STATE PLOT

View distance on lights is pretty good and they also get a bonus where they don't lose their camo rating when on the move, so they are great at spotting things and staying hidden. They don't have any armor really, though you can still bounce shots off your turret if someone shoots that (I bounced an E100 shot off the turret of my 132 last night).

At least on console, the 110 has way, way better frontal armor. About 50-60mm better effectively due to the higher slope on the pike nose. I bounce shots off the front of the 110 so reliably that I don't really fear holding a position solo against multiple enemies because as long as I can keep them all directly in front of me, they rarely ever pen me (and often switch to HE out of frustration, which always makes me laugh).

Also the gun on the 110 is just better than the BL9. Better pen, better DPM, better accuracy. I usually prefer alpha to DPM (so much so that I use the 100mm on my 132), but the increase in DPM combined with how good the 110 is at holding a position and bouncing shots has meant I just rack up tons of damage every game. And it's accurate ebough to reliably use as a sniper, giving the 110 more utility in a tier 10 match than the IS-3.

I love the IS-3. but the 110 is better by quite a bit. Again, at least on console.

Looks like quite a bit of changes coming soon to go along with all the new toys.

https://console.worldoftanks.com/en/news/announcements/update_3-0-overview/

Looks like as soon as it's released the WZ 131 and 132 are getting buffed a bit. More health, lower aim time, lower reload time. Looks kinda nifty.

There's a bit of a nerf for the FV304, which is what made me enjoy playing artillery. Little bit slower, doesn't turn as fast, and doesn't aim or shoot as quickly either.

Looks like the KV-220 is getting more armor. Because it needs it? (it really doesn't, but I'll take it because I love playing this thing) I could be reading it wrong. The update says "displayed armor values" but I can't imagine they'd have it say it has different armor than it does.

Overall the changes look ... meh, I dunno. There's a lot of changes to vehicles I don't use so I don't care yet. Everything else seems kinda cool, but just minor tweaks and fixes.

Well now that I've had it for a while and driven it lots, the 113 is alright. I don't think it deserves the reputation it has for being terrible; in fact, I've had a lot more success, a lot more consistently in my 113 than I ever had in my IS-7. It certainly has some really significant flaws and it absolutely cannot be played like a regular heavy tank as it has neither the armor nor the pen for that, but it is a good support tank. Taking it to often poorly-defended flanks and busting through them to surround enemies who are occupied with other friendly tanks is what this thing is good at.

I've got about 28k more xp to need to get my Motherland. There are a ton of those things already. It's pretty ridiculous. I was playing last night and there were matches with 13 motherlands between the two teams. And, as expected, aaaallllll the russian tanks. Everywhere, as far as the eye can see.

I had a match last weekend that gave me over 10k xp for a single match. That was fun. I might upload the replay of it. It wasn't an exceptionally well played match or anything. It was in my KV-220 which makes good matches fairly easy. It was also on the 3xp day, and I had an some ops active. I know the ops don't count towards the motherland, but it was just crazy to me to get over 10k in a single match.

I did notice the chinese tanks and I'll start working on them after all the motherland ops are done. I did notice that at Tier 10, the medium tank and the heavy tank are (at least according to the little stat bars on the side) almost identical except the heavy has more health and more armor. It looks like they go the same speed, do the same damage, have the same sight and radio distances. Is that about right? What would be the reason for getting the medium instead of the heavy in that scenario?

DEEP STATE PLOT

The medium is more maneuverable and a smaller target. Otherwise they are more or less identical, right down to looks. I had a 121 pushing my 113 a few days ago and was kind of shocked at how much the 121 just a slightly downscaled 113. They even play the same, with the 113 really favoring a medium tank playstyle. In fact, driving the 113 a whole bunch has made me a ton better in my medium tanks.

I quite like my French tanks I have so far, though I'm not sure what to bother with at the lower end of the new crop as all the new tanks are in little side branches in tiers I've already gone past rather than being a new full line going from tiers II to X. The thing the French have as their gimmick is mainly the fact they stick autoloaders on every branch of their tech tree, even the top SPG gets a 4 shot gun. In this update, as mentioned in the announcement post, the kind of gimmick is the low tier additions already have variations in the game as German premiums.

Having now driven the Churchill III quite a bit, I will say with certainty that it is, without exception, the best premium in the game, the best tank at tier 5, and tier-for-tier maybe the best tank in the entire game. Saying that about a friggin' Churchill is surprising because the tech tree ones seem extremely bad, but this thing is absolutely monstrous. I bought the thing for a laugh expecting it to suck as hard as the tech tree ones, but instead I absolutely demolish everything in my path. Even tier 6 tanks aren't safe from this thing, just ask the Sherman Jumbo and VK36 I solo killed in my last match with it. If you are looking for a premium tank at all, this is the one to get, no question.
