I had a dire 'dine emergency (hadn't had any in a week!) and the only brands available at the store closest to me were Beach Cliff and Brunswick so I had those for the first time. Was severely disappointed especially in the latter. They were both packed in water, and the Brunswick fishies were just a limp, soft, soggy mess with little flavor. The Beach Cliff dines were a little better but still not firm at all. I gave the 2nd can of Brunswicks to my backyard feral garbage disposal kitty and even she was not excited about them but an opossum finally ate them.

Luckily my local Publix grocery has started carrying King Oscar Wild Caught dines (my faves!) in a pack of 5 for $9.99 so I stocked up on those bad boys.

I like Harvest Farms' Organic "Volcanic Salsa" which has habanero, and Mrs. Renfro's Ghost Pepper salsa. There's a salsa thread but it doesn't get much traffic and there isn't much dad talk. :(

Also mango salsa/chutney is delicious on grilled swordfish.

I bought a $300 Zojirushi expecting it to let me see God but it was no better than my 15 year old $20 White-Westinghouse rice cooker (which doesn't even have a warm mode) I bought at Target. When I returned the Zoji to my local Super H-Mart the cashier could not understand why I would want to return the Ferrari of rice cookers. Rice was no better and all the buttons and modes on the Zuji were too much of a hassle for a Dad. gently caress that.

There are two things that I will never part with until they fall apart- my rice cooker and my wife. Wifey hates it when I say that, which is all the time.

My local Sprouts store has started carrying Wild Planet Mackerel in olive oil. I like WP's dines and love their white anchovies and while the mackerel is good, it's not nearly as mackerel-y as King Oscar which I've only had from a KO taster kit as no stores around here carry them.
Stocked up on some delicious Bela 'dines too.

Ate the mackerel with crackers on my front porch by balancing each saltine on my knee and spreading the fishies onto it with my pocket knife. Daughters and their friends came home from school while I was feasting and they remarked that I am an embarrassing Dad. I do not disagree.

So in a TVIV thread, the subject of the delicious canned meat SPAM was brought up and I learned that SPAM wusubi is a thing. I also learned that SPAM now comes in a variety of flavors including turkey and Teriyaki.

It ain't fish, but it IS in a can and IS a Dad food so let's discuss......

How do you like your salty canned meat? I'm a Dad of simple tastes and my fridge is almost always empty, what with having 5 goddamn kids and all, so I never have anything to make it special. I just fry it and eat it over the sink while fuming and wondering where my loving 17 year old put my car keys.

The Wild Planet mackerel I got a few days ago is absolutely delicious... in fact I like it a lot better than the 'dines. Today I picked up some Wild Planet sardines in marinara sauce; they were ok after I rinsed off the watery and not too flavorful sauce. The little bit that had absorbed into the fishies was alright but it isn't something I'll buy again.

In the checkout line I noticed the little 80+ year old woman behind me had some sardines so I struck up a conversation with her. She talked about how good they are for you and that she has been eating them for as long as she can remember.

I got KO Mackerel in a Taster's Kit and really liked it, enough to annoy the grocery manager by handing him the included UPC card and asked him to stock it, but alas it has not been added to the shelf.

I really like Wild Planet's Mackerel though even more than their regular 'dines. I can't really fairly compare them since I've only had KO mackerel once. Also Wild Planet White Anchovies are fantastic but I don't find them often.

A sad tale of a frustrated 'dine dad-

I came home early from work and intended to go paddle around our lake and eat a tin of dines but upon opening the cupboard I found NO SARDINES. Suspecting one of my 5 goddamn kids as the culprit I searched the house and found no one to yell at so I went to the lake anyway. There I found my 10 year old and one his buddies fishing using MY SARDINES AS BAIT. Of course they didn't catch anything and the last tin of my beloved Bela's was lying on the ground, looking empty and sad. They didn't even have the decency to eat any of them because "fish in cans are yucky". These boneheads have never cleaned a fish in their lives so I asked them how yucky they thought cutting one open would be. The response I got was "I was gonna make you do it since you like yucky fish". I wanted to be done with life right then and there :shepicide:

Now I am 'dine-less and I'm gonna have to start hiding them again. 3 of my kids like the dines but this little fucker apparently just likes to waste them. Anyone want to adopt a 'dine thief??
