I always miss out on the KO promotions because I avoid Facebook

Had Trader Joe's boneless/skinless mackerel and I almost like it as much as their smoked trout. I was expecting it to be super fishy and oily but it was very tasty

My neighborhood QFC supermarket has a shameful sardine section

Something simple like nice greens with diced shallot and a mustard vinaigrette with dines would be good. Avocado in there too?

Used a tin of Seasons in olive oil last night to put into pasta.

Pros

Tin was densely packed

Mild flavor

Cons

Fish were so densely packed it was hard to get them out of the tin

Hard to open tin without splattering oil all over

Kinda bland - like high end canned tuna

followed up those EXCELLENT dines with some Bumblee Dines i got at the Jons market, which usualyl has good Dine selection, alas, the Bumblebee brand Dines are pretty bad. Sludgy and mostly flavorless. The one perk they have is they retain that silvery color of the original Dine, but they have bad texture. Overall an inferior Dine experience.

The 2 packs of Dines and their compliment crackers bring this dinner to somewhere in the neighborhood of 700 calories, and I must refrain from eating more Dines, which pains me to my very core.

Bumblebees in mustard are pretty decent bargain sardines

Treat yourself to a tin of Bela sardines someday - toasted baguette rounds with hot sauce and/or guacamole

I posted this in the old thread but I was talking about sardines with an old man at my neighborhood bar. I showed him the tin of Belas that I'd just bought and he said "Oh the hell with that man, KING OSCARS!"

The next time I came in he gave me a tin of dollar store sardines. They were really good

I tried to reciprocate and brought him a tin of Seasons the next time and he refused my offer. "Nah, I don't want that stuff"

Strangely, despite being a Swede, we have no real access to King Oscar here. We have Gustaf instead, tho only in tomato sauce. It is kind of mindboggling that the two different brands are apparently a thing, given how the Oscar in question was also a Swedish king.

What I am trying to say here is that I wish I had access to more cool dines locally. Especially since Gustaf is apparently made from sprats.

I don't remember offhand and can't be arsed to search - what is the thread opinion of Beach Cliff sardines?

Had them for the first time today and they were okay mashed up into a bowl of rice. Big ugly chunks of sardines but appeared to be cleaned well, maybe a little dry and more fishy tasting/smelling than better sardines, but they were actually okay for my purposes. They only had them in tomato sauce, which I was dubious about, but with a liberal amount of sriracha they were okay.

Then again I use Chicken of the Sea sardines the same way, so I might have a higher tolerance for cheap 'dines than some.

I had Beach Cliff in soybean oil as my introduction to sardines and man that was a bad idea. Fishy but nasty. Need those sauces if you’re getting cheap sardines. Or if you’re a wuss like me

I loved Bumblebees in mustard but can’t find them in any store close by

Yeah it’s not complicated

If you are able to sweat the onions and get your garlic smelling good you don’t need a furnace to finish it off

Sultan (from Morocco) -- regular AND spicy
