I'm the kind of cop who went to the school of John Wu. I leave the crime scene stuff to the nerds because I'm too busy dolphin diving into a drug den and filling everything that moves full of lead.

The Cherubim. Although they do also have animal-servitors, which often include birds.

Edit:

My character sheet should hopefully be ready by tonight. Tomorrow at the latest is what I'm shooting for. I have "making vehicles move around and hopefully not crash" and "fiddle with little tech-y bits" roles down pretty well. Also I shouldn't be a liability in a fight but don't expect me to focus on buying any combat talents any time soon.

Will we be able to try and requisition anything as the game starts?

Outside of the default free -10 reqs I don't think so.

Decided rather than choose between 2 auto pistols or 2 stub autos I'm just going to take one of each instead. Because that's not going to cause confusion when I start trying to req special ammo.

Edit vvvv Technically probably more like an Uzi and Beretta. The hand cannon would be more the Deagle

you get your influence bonus in up-to-Scarce (-10) requisitions to begin with, as per rulebook, and i anticipate letting you make a req check or two each time there's downtime, in addition to whatever loot you scrounge.

we're gonna start off slow though so if you come up with a plan for the first bit that urgently needs e.g. a load of bricks delivered to a certain address, or desperately needs an auspex or something, you'll be able to fit that into your plans. time will, however, keep ticking - requisitioning takes time.

"Because the time has come, well and truly come, for all peoples of our great country, for all citizens of our great commonwealth, for all Australians to come together and build a new future for our nation."

- Kevin Rudd

Born into a hereditary clan of cleaning crews that worked and lived in the coolant tubes of an Imperial Navy warship, Gamma remembers very little of her life before being sniffed out by the Witch-finders aboard the ship and being sent to Terra for evaluation. Lacking the aptitude for interpersonal communication required of an Astropath, and too small and weedy to qualify for an Imperial Guard Primaris Psyker she likely would have been one of the many sacrificed to power the Astronomican had the Inquisition not requisitioned a batch of psykers for service as acolytes. Thrown in to round out the numbers, Gamma has little combat training but possesses broad ability across the common psychic disciplines and should prove a versatile asset to a team.

Gamma desires more than anything to belong to a crew. Being part of a tight-knit family unit is essentially her only cherished memory. While psykers are always outsiders, perhaps the misfits and barely reformed criminals who work for the Inquisition will be open minded enough to accept her as a person?

Gamma hates shirkers. Any true servant of the Emperor will put 110% into any endeavor, and to do less is a small betrayal.

Gamma will sacrifice comfort, personal safety, and life to accomplish important goals. Sanity is a slippery concept for a psyker, but that can go as well if need be.

I mean, you don't have to dual wield chainswords/axes to have an effective melee character. Rather than being a quick choppy character you could do something like Feral -> IG -> Heiro, putting any duplicate aptitude into weapon skill or Strength and wielding a Claymore and Bow&Arrow, basically the 40k version of "Mad Jack" Churchill. You won't have the Finesse aptitude which limits your growth in some areas but you can still pick up some core talents on the cheap like Crushing blow, devastating assault, and hatreds. You'll also have half-cheap access to swift attack, frenzy, and Hammer Blow. Couple those with a greatsword and you can still megajack dudes in melee without being the squirreley quick dual wield guy while still being a pretty good face.

Alternatively you can roll Highborne -> Outcast/Ministorum -> Fanatic (from Enemies Within) and do a lot of the above without specifically being an IG -> Heiro guy.

If you are just shying away from melee in general then welp.

Edit - Comedy option: Do Hive -> Mutant(from enemies within) -> whatever and be a scrunt.

Edit2: If you want to roll up a gunman then roll one up, worst happens is you get lined up as a replacement if someone stops posting in the game thread. You can do a shootman that fills a different niche than what we've got considering the two shooters we've got are myself as a armored pistol tank with minor investigative skills and Kaiju as Doc Holiday. We're both going to be pistol-centric close ranged infighters. You can easily do a different flavor of shooter with a different mix of knowledge/investigation/social attributes. Off the top of my head I can think of: a Long Range/Sniper, midrange/2h autofire specialist, the grenade launcher guy, dual wield desperado gun/sword guy that can outshoot what he can't outmelee, a Shotgun Surgeon that eventually picks up a Naval Shotcannon from one of the DH1/Rogue Trader splats, ect ect.

Troyer Phinalt

"See, you're thinking of this rationally, that's your first mistake."-Excerpt from interrogation logs of Troyer Phinalt

There are no two ways about it, living on a Black Ship sucks. It really sucks if you're one of the passengers, but it sucks just as much if you're one of the crew. Surrounded by thousands of souls that you know are mostly destined to disappear, begging for mercy, some old, some young. The Black Ships have the highest incidence of suicide among the Imperium, bar none. So it was in this hellish environment that Troyer was raised. Everyone on ship was to serve, and Troyer was groomed to become one of the many handlers of the psykers on board ship, guarding them during the perilous journey from the landing bays to the warded cells they are to call home. Always having had a problem with authority figures, this legitimate job lasted all of two years before the man ran off. He decided that a life of living among the bilge of the ship, taking what he wanted by skill or force, was preferable to leading around walking timebombs for a living.

"The talk of my cannibalism is greatly exagerated!"
"So you never ate anyone?"
"I NEVER said that!"

It would have been better for everyone aboard if Troyer had just gotten off ship. Too bad for everyone that Black Ships are the most secure vessels in the galaxy. A ship that never docks, that never lands, that only sends out shuttles with well trained guards to go planetside and pick up their quarry is hard to break off of. This is good when you have dangerous psykers on board, but not so much a deranged crew member. As the years went by, Troyer became more and more unhinged. According to official ship records and Troyer's own confessions, he is responsible for the murder of 58 crew members, 24 security personnel, and one ship board arbite. Things got even worse once he started getting into the ship Frenson and slaught supplies. Eventually, the Ordo Hereticus became involved.

"Hey, feth you man! I will rip out your throat and piss into your stomach! I've done it before!"

The Ordos feared that it was only a matter of time before Troyer did something really stupid, like release an Alpharis Psyker, and so locked down the entire ship and did a deck by deck sweep for Troyer. After two weeks they finally found him, and that was after he took out 10 more inquisitorial personnel. The ship captain, the crew, two Inquisitors, four Navigator houses, and a handful of telepaths that were former inmates on the ship all called for the execution of Troyer when they found him, but one Hereticus Inquisitor somehow made the case that he should be spared. He argued that Troyer was certainly a skilled killer, and despite all opportunities, never turned to Chaos. Such an asset should be turned around by the Inquisition and used on their enemies.

Five dead interrogators later, the Inquisitor got what he wanted. Once they put him on a few missions, he stopped even needing the explosive collar on his neck. He still hates authority figures, and will take orders from no one, but if you suggest he kill someone (which isn't too hard) and make it seem like his idea, Troyer is in invaluable asset.

All teams that asset Troyer is assigned to require extra training in proper handling of the asset to ensure that excessive collateral damage to team mates is avoided.

OK so in terms of having a floating skull with a longlas poking out of it - in-game this will be exactly as non-subtle as the normal context of a MIU weapon, i.e a big shoulder mounted gun pointed at anyone you talk to. MIU weapons still need to be Readied, as far as I can tell, so it's not quite the same as actually threatening people where ever you go.

Should you need to disarm for any reason you can just unscrew some technowidget and ditch that instead of the whole skull

E: oh hey

Cool. I figured that it would look a lot like the servo-skull in my character portrait; one eye is very obviously a weapon what with having a short barrel sticking out that glows bright red as it charges up to fire.

I had assumed with a regular MIU weapon mount it would have a "down" or "safe" position where it would fold up against the tech-priest's back and could be concealed partially by robes. Having my skull's eye not be lit up and the barrel retracted a bit seems like a similar thing to show that it's not currently about to kill someone and be a tiny bit less conspicuous. I hope you didn't think I was trying to sneak in a tiny lascannon or something.

Although... nothing says you can't put a heavy weapon in the MIU...

Yeah sure give it a go. You may want to mention in your background about how open and how remorseful a heretek you are though.

Not that your guys would know this, but your inquisitor is neither particularly puritanical nor particularly radical. I think I would draw the line at him recruiting mutants, but a heretek is probably ok, under the understanding that you'd be considered even more disposable than usual.

Do you even have to brace heavy weapons for single shots? Iirc the heavy flamer has specific bracing rules due to spray but if you got hold of a missile launcher you don't need to due to the fact they are single only.

To be fair, mounting a compact, single shot krak missile into a servo skull would be kind of hilarious.

Edit: kind of a slow day at work, I may draw up a second character for funsies that a dark Heresy newbie can either steal or I can use for an alternate if we have too many shooty people.

Edit2: Imagine American Horror Story: Freakshow's character Dandy if he were built like a brick shithouse. Essentially a spoiled inbred noble with a sociopathic streak. His mother gets him a cushy job in the Adeptus Administratum where his lack of moral judgement causes him to kill a co-worker and then go into hiding. Highborne -> Adeptus Administratus -> Warrior. His AdAdmin background lets him take A goddamned missile launcher and enforcer light carapace as free requisitions.

Eventually, absolutely. I don't plan on taking much, if anything, combat related for a bit so I can focus on upping my utility skills. S'why I splurged on the MIU and long las, it should serve me pretty well for an adventure or two. Might try and requisition a red-dot sight for it if I get the chance, though.

You don't need to, but you get -30 to hit. You'd only want to do it at a tank at close range.

Spray bracing fits in with the 'dodge bonus instead of hit penalty' thing from operating a weapon untrained. Brilliantly, it means average people (30 in all stats, no talents or skills) are unimaginably more deadly with a flamethrower than with regular guns, and in an open field, one untrained flamer guy can probably take on ten men with shotguns and win. The +20 dodge for untrained spraying counteracts the -20 for untrained dodge, meaning a 30% to negate a hit, whereas a regular weapon gives an untrained person an effective BS of 10.

I fucking hate puzzles.

Just going to leave this here. Someone let me know if you want to use it as the basis for a character. DJF: If it's unused and come selection time and you'd rather use me as a the galaxy's most unsubtle person I can work it out. The absolute joke option would be to spend almost all of my starting experience around being able to wield a goddamned rocket launcher that I can technically start with because lol Administratum

Enforcer Light Carapace
Heavy Stubber
Chainblade with melee attachment for Heavy Stubber
I'm taking a wild shot in the dark on the chainblade if DJF would let it A) be attached to a 30kg gun and B) for it to actually be usable like some sort of hobknob chainspear.

This guy can take cheapo social skills but I figured it would probably be more important for someone otherwise aptituded out to be a combat monster to actually be a combat monster.

If anyone wants to borrow this as a baseline keep this in mind: if you want, you could replace Heavy Weapons Training with Launchers, take a grenade launcher instead of a heavy stubber and suddenly you have a character who's not married to Adeptus Administratus for the easier acquisitions and you can play with his background a bit.

You can also make him into a loving scary like whoa ranged combatant if you swap Warrior for Assassin and lean into an easy rocket launcher acquisition. You can lower his weapon skill to put elsewhere (probably agility). Keep his strength at 40 and just take a 500 exp bath for the strength advance to get to 45 for Bulging Biceps. Start the game with launchers and heavy for 400 exp, 500 for the strength, and 100 to put into either a ballistic skill advance now, a face skill now (considering he's got fellowship and social attributes), or bank it for bulging biceps later. Assassin nets you super cheap quick draw and rapid reload down the line as well so you can eventually load, brace, and fire a rocket launcher all in one round if need be. You can also swap home planet for something that nets him either a strength aptitude or a duplicate that you can put into strength.

Yes, I'm having a slow day today, Why do you ask? If any system newbies want help building something that's not the above let me know and I can work something up for you.

vvvv You're no fun space-dad.

ALL I EVER THINK ABOUT IS RACISM AND IM GOING TO ACCUSE YOU OF IT TO SHOW EVERYONE JUST HOW VIRTUOUS I AM AND TOTALLY NOT RACIST AT ALL

If everyone keeps making gun people I can probably rework my role and skills to pick up some social abilities. But I'd rather not have to spread myself too thin to encompass everything non-combat related.

Sorry, I didn't see that.

Edit:

Is Operate [Voidcraft] worth having? I had thought it covered operating anything in space, but Aeronautica covers things like landers or dropsbips. Voidcraft are the warp-capable freighters or other ships.
