Do cereals not have toys as much these days? For my entire childhood, breakfast for a week or two was totally dependent upon which cereal had the best prize inside.

Speaking of toys, the best day of the late summer/fall was when the jumbo Sears catalog arrived. So many pages of toys and I started my Christmas list early. For reasons unknown, I wrote down rock tumbler for several years.

As others have said, you can get pop in glass bottles still. They're not as common, as 7-11 doesn't carry them very much, but most takeout places near me have glass bottled coke, and all the burrito places have that mexican pop brand.

I do miss 2l glass bottles. Those were fantastic.

I don't know about 7/11s in general, but pretty much every gas station in my area carries some kind of good soda. Hell, the generically named Food Mart that I always go to even has these things.

Chi-Chi's restaurants. It was a huge deal when I lived in Pittsburgh and they were the only "Tex-Mex" place in that half of the state. I loved their free tortilla chips and their fried ice cream.

Vanilla Laffy Taffy. Laffy Taffy used to come in squares and they had all kinds of flavors.

The first cereals that I've seen with prizes in decades were for the Minions and now for Star Wars. Maybe they're making a comeback.

The goddamn corn not exactly bread thing you got as a side with every dish at Chi-Chis. Oh man, it was the best.

You can still get the Chi-Chis brand mix for it at some grocery stores but :effort:

drat, that looks pretty sweet. Which country? England?

When I was a kid, I rented so many video games every or every other week the staff there knew me by name and even gave me a store display for Diddy Kong Racing for the N64 I still have to this day.

Remember when video stores let you rent video game systems? They came in their own foam lined briefcases (at least with Blockbuster they did). I remember renting the Sega 32X and playing Knuckles Chaotix this way. It... wasn't very good.

The Family Video here is still struggling along but I'm amazed that it is. The only people you see go in there are the very old, and families with little kids who are there because most of the children's movies are a free rental.

I bet they would do a little more business if they hadn't taken out the porn section. Like at some point the manager went "Hey guys, we're only doing business in porn rentals that cost 3x the rental price of the new releases, better nip that in the bud before we get a reputation"

E: I rented some porn from them after I turned 18 many years ago and the lady at the register was apparently offended. Maybe they got rid of them because all of the middle-aged women that work there were tired of having to check out "Basting the Giblets 4: Have Yourself a MILFy Little Xmas" over and over

E2: I guess the store still has its uses, though. Even though I have Netflix and Amazon Prime, if I want to watch a good movie then there's a very good chance it isn't available and I have to rent it from the "Favorites" section at Family Video for 50 cents

I ate at a Wimpy's in the States once. I have no idea where it came from since it was long after the American chain had closed and I can't find any evidence the British chain or the Canadian chain ever took a stab at the US market. They had a giant photograph of a large, bald and noticeably disfigured man labeled "Our Regional Distribution Manager." Not the store manager or CEO or even Employee of the Month but the Regional Distribution Manager.

I was the only customer, the food was terrible, and it was only open for a few months. I never saw another one anywhere. It was a bit weird.

Phone booths used to be everywhere when I was a kid. There was one next to my school, outside the store, at a crossing on our suburban home street and in the lobby of the airport. By the early 2000s all of them were gone due to the proliferation of mobile phones.

I makes you wonder what mundane urban fixture is gone next. I suspect it's the postbox, because people send fewer and fewer letters these days.

Overall a large number of physical services performed at certain premises have been rendered obsolete by electronic services. The ranks of photo developers, bank branch offices, post offices and computer stores have been severely thinned by digital photography, online banking, email and online shopping.

Telstra are doing a similar thing in Australia; they own all the pay phones and rather than take them down they just chuck a router inside and boradcast a WiFi network that lets you use your home internet account with them from there.

E: VVV They still have phones in them as far as I can tell, and I imagine the point is to make money off what would otherwise be uselessly obsolete so it's unreasonable to expect free WiFi.

So instead of a phone that anyone can use it's going to be internet access for people who happen to be with Telstra?
